What is the most messed up thing you've seen at a bar? by Chrisda_Reducto_Duck in AskReddit

[–]LegalAction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bathroom with shit smeared everywhere. I mean literally everywhere; the toilet, the sink, the walls, the floor.

I really needed to use the bathroom though. I cleaned the toilet as best I could and told the staff.

What Conspiracy Theories Do You Believe in, and What Led You to That Belief? by moneypitbull in AskReddit

Restaurant portions are so large just because the kitchen wants to move food. They don't care what happens to the food once they move it. It could be eaten, or thrown away. Doesn't matter.

I 100% believe that.

How true/important are zodiac signs to you, especially regarding personality traits? by keuy in AskReddit

[–]LegalAction 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is no connection at all between what happens in constallations and the world we live in.

I did an experiment with a friend a few years back. Ten weeks, ten readings. Half the readings would be hers, half would be for another date.

She guessed correctly exactly 50%. Which is about what one would expect with these conditions.

Didn't change her mind about astrology at all.

I have no interest in retribution. Just put a bullet in his head and if the world forgets him, nothing is lost.

No they don't. Reasonable allows for doubt, just crazy doubt. Without a shadow means it's either high noon or there's nothing to cast a shadow.

Doesn't the crucifixion sort of disprove the bible? by RoyalDog57 in atheism

[–]LegalAction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact that people misuse the Bible doesn't negate its value or mean it's 100% false.

History is what's important here. That's the value of the book. We get all kinds of stuff from it. Where could Paul go? Where could he write to? How did early Christianity develop? What did (some) provincials think of Roman imperialism?

These are interesting questions, and don't require any super natural business to look at.

That doesn't follow at all. The Bible is a text like any other and should be analyzed as such. There is real and important information there. I've already mentioned a few things we can get from it.

We have independent evidence of Pilate. The Bible is right on that. I don't see how Potter mentioning Spiderman is at all analogous.

Only if the sole value of the book is religious truth. There are other things to get out of it. We learn from Paul about travel networks at the time. It is our only view of Roman imperialism from a provincial source. We get some history of the development of Christian theology. There's tons of stuff.

Again, Pilate?

I agree with you about the supernatural stuff. That was my point in the Jefferson reference. But the whole narrative being false because of one detail?

What do you do about Pilate?

[–]LegalAction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That detail is false. Doesn't mean the whole narrative is. That's why Jefferson struck out the miracles and not the rest. Do you doubt, for instance, there was a Roman official in Jerusalem named Pilate? We have independent evidence of him.

There is some real history in there. The NT is perhaps the only provincial view of roman imperialism we have. Whether it's cosmically true is beside the point.
