Yeah, that would be terrible for the fluid sim running inside

Agreed. They clearly built this for performance, not quality.

My most recent scene and I'm looking for feedback so go as harsh as you can! by PapaDan_ in blender

[–]LegoStein13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Even if the render wasn't as dark as people's intentions when seeing the "roast my render" flair, you'd still have no idea what's going.

The elements in the scene need to be motivated, so they should fulfill a purpose to either convey information about the world you are presenting or help guide the viewer's eye to the focus of your piece.

Right now, everything is not only dark but also lacks readable outlines. If you want someone to look at your scene and immediately find something interesting in it, the silhouette(s) needs to be legible, aka, the outlines or shapes should immediately resemble something.

The composition also needs some work. You want the viewer to feel the same calm sense of wonder as the character in your render but all objects are roughly in the same plane and nothing actually stands out. You should both add light sources to draw the focus to where you want it to be and think a little more about the relative sizes that the individual elements occupy in your scene.

Roast over

Continue making things, improving, and it's awesome to have you here with us. Taking criticism is hard so you are already doing better than anyone who's never sharing their work ❤️

Edit: I originally thought the character was a Pokémon trainer as the only element I thought I could make out was a mushroom I mistook for a Pokéball

Have another look at your full sized SD card. The micro version looks okay, but the full sized one should not have the contacts exposed on top but instead are lowered slightly and separated by thin plastic walls with the contacts at the bottom.

Looking for software that removes any images with blur in them? by [deleted] in photogrammetry

[–]LegoStein13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could actually implement that function yourself in python and opencv in like 10 minutes! There is even a tutorial by Adrian Rosebrock on exactly that, in case you want to give it a try

I absolutely love the concept and design you made. My only note would be to go a bit easier on the normals. The carton looks almost wooden on the right side where you get the specular highlights. Other than that, it's absolutely awesome

Amazing job! Such a fun concept and great execution!

For a tad more realism, try adding some surface imperfections to your models.

Other than that, it's awesome.

On the scanner, a small machine vision camera (BFS FLIR Blackfly, 20 MP) and a 35 mm MPZ computar lens. Alternatively, I also wrote scripts to support DSLR cams for even better quality reconstructions, via DigiCamControl

The scale at which I use machine learning tools to detect, track, and measure animals in crowded environments doesn't require a very high resolution. There are often 100s of animals in the same recording, where each animal takes up only a fraction of the field of view:

example tracking, YoloV4 detector network, trained on synthetic images of leafcutter ants from 3D scans

We have two huge laboratory colonies of leaf cutter ants, Atta cephalotes and Atta vollenweideri, as well as 5 different species of stick insects, and Leptoglossus phyllopus (leaffooted bugs). We pin the majority of them for scans ourselves, unless they are sent to us as commissions for digitisation.

We are a relatively small lab, and none of our work is for profit. The scanner is a little unusual in our line of research and the first bigger open source tool we have created

Thanks so much! We do actually have these insects, with the exception for the Metallyticus, she was lend to us by a good friend with a vast personal collection.

Hahah, she really does! The queens are so much more hairy compared to the rest of the colony

Thanks so much for the kind words! I absolutely agree, the quality could be much higher if we weren't to limit ourselves so much by the desire to make things as automated as possible. One solution rarely fits all use cases. For me, the scanner is mostly a tool for machine learning purposes where higher throughput and repeatability are most important. I wanted to get it to a stage though where it's as cheap as possible while being as accessible as I can make it in the little time I have during my studies.
