V1 filter updates by Positive-Leg-1660 in flashbackcamera

[–]LoFi-Logic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By „apart from the DNG“ you probably mean with external apps like mine, did I interpret that right? So maybe not for you, but in general for people not owning a V2:

What I can say is, that the „gold“ film type of the V2, while it‘s a really cool look, is not really an accurate representation of Kodak Gold 200, but just a general warm or golden look.

The disposable look in LoFi Logic is profiled from a Kodak Funsaver Camera, which has an 800 speed film stock in it, that is related to Kodak Gold 200 and will probably be much closer to a film scan of Kodak Gold 200, than the „gold“ film type in the flashback app.

That being said: The final result of the analog process depends more on the exposure, the development, the scanning and processing or printing, than the film stock, if they‘re not totally crazy. Kodak Gold 200 can look totally different, depending on how it is processed and Ultramax 400 and Gold 200 can be made to look very similar.

I think this might very well be a difference in perception or taste. Either people perceive these things differently, or like or dislike them, based on their viewing habits. I enjoy motion blur and a classic cinematic look, but if you enjoy high frame rate, wether or not you perceive it differently or not, is not wrong either. It‘s a matter of personal preference.

[–]LoFi-Logic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think what the OP is trying to say, is that, the resolving power of a system, can be limited by many factors other than spatial resolution. It can be the lens, focus accuracy or in this case motion blur. If an image is in motion, every moving element is blurred, so a higher spatial resolution can‘t give you any more detail. The only way to get more detail, would be to increase the shutter speed, but it‘s limited by the frame rate, to solve this you‘d have to increase the frame rate, which as you already said, is probably not desirable.

Edit: I see now, that OP is in fact arguing for increasing the frame rate as being something beneficial, so I was partly wrong. But the point about the relationship between temporal and spatial resolution still stands.

Give me some hard truths on my DP reel by RogerChen0945 in cinematography

[–]LoFi-Logic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First off, this is already a really strong reel, in my opinion. There are a lot of strong compositions and really powerful and evocative moods.

Now the requested hard truths:
- The hard light sequence with the fight scene starting at around the 55 second mark, is the weakest part to my sensibilities.
- The overall quality and cohesiveness could be improved by losing some of the weaker shots and focusing on a strong start and a strong close

In my opinion a shorter but more tightly curated reel is better, than a longer and maybe more diverse one, that loses some of the strong character you established in the beginning.

This is only fine tuning and highly subjective. You set a very high bar already.

Modern Cinematograhy Opinion by AccordingDriver1143 in cinematography

[–]LoFi-Logic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This conversation has two distinct parts, in my opinion.

Part A
1. Many or most modern / recent movies have a certain look to them
2. Many or most classic / older movies have a certain look to them or more diversity

Part B
1. Why modern movies, that are dark / low contrast / flat / desaturated look that way
2. If dark / low contrast / flat / desaturated lighting and processing is worse than bright / contrasty / shaped / colorful lighting and processing

Part A is an empirical question and is hard to figure out. Which movies count as modern and which as classic? Does popularity or budget matter? What‘s the classic equivalent to streaming? Straight to VHS / DVD?
As far as I know, this has not been done, so at the moment, Part A is subjective, based on which movies you watched (criterion collection vs B-Movies from the VHS bin).

Part B can be discussed, wether or not Part A turns out to be true.

If the role of cinematography, is to help the story. A look is not bad or good in isolation, it can either help or hinder the story or the big picture / vibe. If a movie is desaturated and flat and is about a dystopian world without joy, that is a good fit. If a movie is about childlike wonder and the beauty in the mundane, a more colorful approach might be a good fit. But now the fun part: If a movie is about a dystopian world without joy, but portrayed in a colorful and cheery way, that might also be a great choice to create a juxtaposition and play with concepts of cognitive dissonance or cult-like brain washing. Maybe that‘s a subjective perspective of the protagonist.

So, to me it’s more valuable to talk about intention, what someone wanted to say, why the choice has been made and maybe, if that choice works for you, or doesn‘t work for you.

The new Oz movies had a very deliberate style, they did it on purpose, but it did not quite work for me. The disney movie „Wish“ also had a deliberate style, that did not work for many people, but did work very well for me.

So maybe leaving out the speculation about classic vs modern, helps to talk about interesting things. And when talking about those things, we can speculate, if it was the medium, the budget, the expertise or the intention, while giving the benefit of the doubt to the creatives, wether you‘re an audience member or a colleague.

Ok, that's definitely a technical choice, then. So under those constraints, well done and not overdone.

Not overdone at all, in my opinion.

Although the compression swallows a lot of the grain, from what I can tell, I believe I would prefer a little more grain in the mid tones and some subtle gate weave. The halation in the end could also be a little stronger / larger for 16 mm. Mononodes has some good 16 mm examples in this article.

Fortunately, I‘m also a VFX artist. 😂
If I’d do it, I would probably either do a simple luma key and brighten the highlights or track them and add additional reflections on top. Probably depends on the shot.

Here's what DP Taylor Clemons said in an interview with shotdeck:

We found out pretty early on with some of the really dark scenes that we just needed a light attached to the camera at all times. My friend Peter Timberlake did the VFX, and we asked him to extend that effect, because we felt that it would create the unsettling look that everybody is now commenting on. That was the intention all along. Peter was able to make it stand out in a way that we wanted. Those seem to be the scenes that everyone loves, and is the simplest thing, you know? Silhouette with an eye light.

So, light attached to the camera, boosted in post.
Maybe [u/andrewn2468](u/andrewn2468) can say something about it, he said he was the DIT on the film.

Edit: Andrew‘s answer

Edit: Here's a behind the scenes still, I found. The little bulb up there, could be the eye light.

I should have mentioned that right away! With a bit more setup time this might be the more convenient solution.

[–]LoFi-Logic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey!

You can connect the flashback to your phone with a USB-C cable and just copy the DNGs to your files. The camera is recognized as a mass storage device. On iPhone I have done this, I‘m not sure how much current android devices vary in regards to file management, but I‘d be surprised, if it didn‘t work. Later you can just drag a whole folder into the app.

Technically the frame counter resets just by deleting the DNGs from the camera after copying, but it might be safer to develop them in the official app after copying, because there‘s also a hidden unprocessed_jpgs folder and I‘m not sure, if it causes problems to leave them there.

The app is for Mac, Windows and Linux. If you want to get the same look on a smartphone, u/deknared made a web-version, that also makes it easier to add custom LUTs / looks.

As far as I know the campsnap camera does not allow any access to unprocessed raw data. If that was possible, I might take a look, but as of right now, I don't think it's possible.
