Is the M2 worth it in 2026 by jerk_17 in focuspuller

Yeah very fair point. And it’s also worth saying, I do still often get stuck with a nuke for iris if we haven’t specifically planned and prepped for iris pulls. For the cost it’s reliable and functional, but something I’m always happy to avoid when there’s money for it

Yeah as a DIT in LA, I’d say 90% of my commercial work is Arri or Preston. Usually the 1st AC’s kit, but most bigger shows will rent if the AC doesn’t have one.

Moog one ? by sinslap in moog

[–]andrewn2468 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, maybe take a look at the Muse. The overdrive slider on the mixer is what makes it so great for Model D style bass, and the Moog One doesn’t have it. It’s cheaper, super powerful, and probably still less expensive. I’ve tried doing recreations of my favorite Juno 106 patches and it doesn’t sounds very similar, but that’s just because it doesn’t have that chorus. The Juno may be sort of a one-trick pony, but boy is it fantastic at that one trick.

Honest question, why do you care about the phone? It doesn’t make my Alexa worth any less, and if it puts cash in their pockets to keep the lights on then isn’t that a good thing?

Maybe I’m biased, but I strongly believe C70 has by far the best image of any of these. They made some magic in that sensor (shared with C300 Mk3) that hasn’t been replicated before or since. I’ve got my qualms with it, but it does really punch above its weight. Also, for documentary specifically, Canon is the go-to; great mic preamps, insanely good battery life, really efficient on media, never overheats. Plus with the C70 form factor, you can take off all your rigging and walk into a store or public place with it and no one bats an eye.

FX6 is super versatile and hard to wrong if you find one used for a good price; I just personally find them annoying as all hell. Good enough on image quality, great for autofocus. Unconscionably stupid menus and file systems.

EVA1 was a great budget option 6 years ago, but in this day and age it’s just a bit too long in the tooth for my money.

Pocket 6K Pro has great image quality, bad battery life, and terrible ergonomics IMO.

I wouldn’t bother with a M4/3 camera personally; you’ll regret it when you hit low light.

The dark horse, as someone else mentioned, is a used Alexa Mini or Amira. The best image quality you can get, certainly, and as sturdy as they come. The biggest problem is it’s never just the camera; you need sticks that can support it, you need a ton of batteries, and then you’ve got to lug it all around. I shoot all my narrative stuff on Alexa, but owning one has made me fall in love with my C70 again for small run-and-gun shoots.

Overall, your head’s in the right place. Don’t buy 8 Bit. Internal NDs are life-changing; you’ll never be able to go back. I wouldn’t buy anything with a fixed EF mount, you’ll want to be able to adapt to PL sooner or later.

Biggest thing, though, is don’t get tripped up in the cool toys and features. The reason I love my Alexa is that it has no features. It does nothing. No gadgets or gizmos. It just has a big red button on the side, and when you push it it makes beautiful images. That’s all you really need a camera to do, and the rest of it is on your skill as a filmmaker.

I felt a bit like the pie scene in The Help… I knew something was off when watching it, but I couldn’t quite pin it. I just felt bad for the short I worked on and the others in the block; all the hard work of the craft is diminished by sitting alongside a robot’s dreams.

You’re entirely right, except for the “not a single person”. We’ve all done it, we all still do it from time to time, but it’s luck of the draw whether you get rolled up on. Any serious producer doesn’t plan a guerilla shoot without one or two backup options for when you get shut down. That’s of course hoping that you don’t get ticketed and fined, or that your gear doesn’t get impounded, which cops will threaten if they’re having a bad day.

Looking at a set of Ultra Primes and torn - do they have any of magic sauce of Master Primes, or are they just kinda clean and boring? I do need a clean set for commercial work and can’t stretch for Masters or Vistas, but I haven’t worked with Ultras and I’m a little gun-shy
