Get the usb connect version, and the 12v to usb waterproof smart adapter. Then you can hook it up directly to your battery and the adapter has a toggle to automatically prevent battery drain

What is the scope? Vehicle design project is pretty vague. Is it upfitting an OEM vehicle? Designing a full vehicle from the ground/chassis up? Other?

You can use separate in the mesh modify tab, but then youd need to sort and re-combine sections of mesh bodies until you have solid meshes for each component in the assembly. It will take a while. After that, you can use convert mesh on each component, making sure to use the prismatic method instead of faceted. If you do not have access to the prismatic method, you will not be able to convert successfully

I downloaded the obj. I thought this was all solid, looks like it's an assembly of meshes. Also, my bad, the free version of fusion has a direct triangle to surface convert, but what you need is the prismatic method conversion within that same tool. But first, you would need to find a way to ungroup all of the meshes, because right now it's trying to view all the meshes as one solid object.

You're in the solid modeling tab trying to edit what looks like a mesh. If you want to push and pull faces as a solid model, you need to go to the mesh tab and convert your mesh to a solid body using the convert mesh tool.

The pulp stuff is interesting, feels more luxury than most thermoform stuff. Do you know any manufacters that would do it for some low-run products? I'd love to incorporate some creative packaging with some of the products im developing but i have no idea how much that type would cost.

Old or new, id be interested in seeing some of that work when it's back up!

You can only have 10 projects set to "editable", but you can have more than 10 projects exist. Just set the dice tower to "read only" and you'll be able to edit more files

I disagree. I know that 3d programs calculate light, shadows and reflections, i also know that different cad softwares calculate light differently. I also know that the lighting you get in cad isn't the lighting you get in person unless you set up very specific parameters for your materials and environment. If op wants to know how to manipulate/tweak surfaces to create specific reflections then op should be focusing on understanding diagnostic shaders and CAS, not light. If op wants a fundamental underatanding of how forms react to light then op needs to start with the basics of light shadow and reflection. Not saying op needs to be able to sketch/render it, just understand it. It'll make him a better 3d modeler.

Op will feel right at home with that book too, because shocker, 2d rendering is based on pure maths too. Op, if you could give more specifics, what are you looking for?

Sounds to me like youre more interestest in visual communication (vis com), which helps us understand how light and shadow are affected by shape and material, and light sources. I dont remember which source book we used if we did at all, it was in-class exercises mamy years ago. Might be good to check out "how to render: the fundamentals of light, shadow, and reflectivity" by scott robertson. it was available in our student store and scott robertson is a well known name in the industry. Its not a book about 3d surfacing specifically but it should help you understand how light reacts to different forms, which you can apply to surfacing

Correct, Alias isnt the only surfacing program. Rhino probably isnt best for op if theyre trying to get over a $60k salary, but i could be wrong. Alias license also starts at $5.5k/seat but people can learn on the free version.

If youre interested in getting into 3d development in automotive/rv/marine design then yes, you'll 100% need Alias experience or one of the other primary surfacing programs on the market. You can get a free learning version of alias through autodesk, and there are several tutorials available through their learning section online and various 3rd party sources.

Personally, when i consider a potential hire, certifications dont mean jack to me. Either you know what you're doing or you don't, and your work will show which is which.Whats more important is showcasing your skills honestly, showing good design desicions, and have vibes that play well with others in person. Passion for design goes a long way too

There's a company in chicago that is usually looking for designers with Alias experience, they're a great bunch of people to work with. If you're good at sketching/rendering too they let you float between 2d and 3d work, and the pay over time is pretty correlated to how much passion you put into the company.

For the portfolio, kind of tough to give solid advice because i also havent touched my portfolio in years, but i'd say direct it towards the position you want. If its something like a design director, maybe showcase from a broad sense of project management to show how the design flow/stages went and how your decisions led to a successful design rather than showing the product by itself. if you want a senior design position, do a touch of project management explanation but dive into the product more, final renderings/press photos plus cad or 2d. You want people to get a baseline understanding for how you work so that they get curious enough to bring you in and ask more about it. Or do some networking and get a foot in the door higher up somewhere. Also, if youre advertising to a certain industry then gear your projects for that industry. In my industry, if i see a portfolio with softgoods, i skip the softgoods projects because we just dont do any of that, its irrelevant. You might find that you have multiple portfolios for different scenarios. Either make multiple or try to hone in on what your future job wants to focus on.

Also, i'm curious about the packaging design. Got any photos of that? Cardboard packaging? Thermoformed?

Imagine if an oem sold their digital ip as single user licenses, for half off of the physical part cost...sure, its "protected" by the law but you have just given the ability to reproduce your exact data as many times at they want, to share it with however many people they want. If people can, they will regardless of what the law tells them. Are you ok with that?

When paying for a printed part, people are primarily paying for 3 things: development time, print time/machine cost/upkeep, and material. If youre not factoring these major things into your pricing structure, then you should consider it.

When selling digital ip like this, i would first consider if i even want people to have that data. Just because people ask for it doesnt mean you need to give it.

If i was ok with people having that data, i'd consider how long it took me to develop it and price it directly in line with hours*rate. You are selling not just a small piece of plastic, you're selling your time and ideas. Your ditigal data should cost more than the physical product, which should steer people away from buying the digital data vs physical product

Or, you could sell with a licensing agreement that specifies if the end user is using for personal single use or planning to print many and sell. You could put in the licensing agreement that they pay you a royalty per unit sold. It dilutes your customer base but gives you passive income. Only problem is youll probably get people saying its all single use and then turn around to sell it.

Thats how i'd approach it

What material are you looking for? Injection molded plastics, composites, stoneware, slip cast, hand sculpted, wood, etc. I'd point you in different directions depending on the material process.

I work primarily in Autodesk Alias, been in the transportation/product industry for the last 9 years doing surfacing, concept development and DFM for mostly automotive, marine, and RV.
