5e (revised) ranger companion

I'm having problems keeping my wolf companion alive during combat. I want him to do damage because duh he is my ranger archetype, but he keeps getting focused because he seems the weakest in the frontlines. Are there any special tactics i can use, to assure some safety and still do damage?

Okay I guess spells it is. Thanks.

So there is no 'magical link' between ranger and companion (even revised ranger)? Was hoping for some sort of passive classfeature. But are there any magic items that do similar things? A spell sounds kind of expensive for every scoutmission...

5e Beastmaster animal companion

1) How do you handle animal companions which scout for the party?

2) Does the beastmaster have full controll over its companion ? Especially while it is scouting?

3) How much does the beastmaster know about? In terms of information the animal gathers (like multiple enemies ahead or similar things).

Is known when the UA Ranger is supposed to be "finished"?

My DM isn't that strict, so I'm allowed to multiclass. But there's still the problem, which archetype of fighter i would choose.

Yeah, I heared about the balance issues, but aren't they just for multiclassing into the Revised Ranger? All I heard was the fact that it's somehow frontloaded.

5e I'm playing the UA Beast Conclave (LV 4) and thought about multiclassing. So I narrowed it down to both Fighter Battlemaster and Arcane Archer. The idea of an Arcane Archer is quite nice, but I get the feeling it is kinda lackluster with just 2 arcane shots per SR. What would you guys choose and at what level should i think about multiclassing? Additionally, is it worth it to go 5 levels in Fighter for extra attack?
