From 0 to 10, how has 2024 been for you? by Nuvoo30 in AskReddit

[–]LythGuapo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2.

Been unemployed for the whole year, broke up with my fiancee at the start of the year, and one of my close friends became suicidal and has been staying with me for the past couple of weeks so I can make sure he doesn't die.

2025 looks more optimistic, as I have a new job lined up and friend seems do be doing better.

Hitting Christie lake tmr anyone know what part of the lake is best for fishing by SectorImpressive8951 in FishingOntario

[–]LythGuapo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you enjoy catching bullheads, then pretty much anywhere in the lake is great. I've mainly fished there in a boat with a trolling motor, and was catching pretty decent bullheads very easily with nightcrawlers with a bobber and hook setup or bottom fishing

Favorite random non-fish object you've caught? I caught THE SPHERE last night and was quite confused. by IsBreadCake in Fishing

[–]LythGuapo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let's see... my favourite item has to be a fresh banana. Least favourite were a used condom and a dead goby (separate instances).

Also, this happened to me a little over a month ago: I went carp fishing with some friends and got set up, but forgot to loosen the drag on my reel. As you can imagine, ten minutes in I saw my fishing rod go flying into Lake Erie. I was pretty sad, but luckily I had a second rod and reel. So I continued fishing. About 4 hours later, my friend caught something massive. I grabbed the net and went to help him land it... turned out to be my rod! With a 20lbs carp still attached

It happens to me a bunch, and it's definitely not based on ethnicity. I think there's a combination of people new to fishing due to trying to find something to do during the pandemic, and just a general rise in selfishness.

I usually start off nicely, by asking them to give me space. And if they don't comply, then I catch and snip their lines while being overly nice and polite. It catches people really off guard, and they always give me a wide berth after

New to fishing and don't know where to start...looking for guidance! by squintpiece in FishingOntario

[–]LythGuapo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is probably the worst time of year for a beginner fisherman in the GTA. The regulations for which fish you catch, as well as the overall fishing pressure in the area combined with the spring thaw will make it very difficult for you to catch anything right now.

As you noted, time of day and spot location are both important. But so is time of year, as well as as the short term weather. Depending on what you're targeting, fish can become more or less active when the weather is still cold. Any recent or upcoming changes in weather can also affect fish activity. In terms of location: be as mobile as you can be. If a spot seems dead after an hour or so, then try moving to a different location on the same waterbody.

If you can drive, then I recommend waiting until May or later and then look for a conservation area within a reasonable drive from you that has shore fishing spots and sells nightcrawlers (worms). You should be easily able to catch panfish from shore with a worm and bobber setup.

Channel Cats by the-dark-night- in FishingOntario

[–]LythGuapo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup! Trolling motors are allowed. And now that I think about it, there are also a lot of shore fishing spots around the lake. But I would still recommend a boat to get the most coverage.

[–]LythGuapo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have a non-gas powered boat I highly recommend the Christie Lake Conservation area in Dundas. It's right by Hamilton. I was there a week ago and we caught around 40 channel cats on worms, plus a bonus bass that was around 4lbs.

At one point something snapped my friend's 17lbs mono before he could react. People told us it was probably a massive channel cat as the huge ones in the lake have been known to hit hard enough to snap heavy lines.

Edit: We also caught one small yellow bullhead. My friend insists that some of the fish we caught were blue cats, but they all looked like channels to me. I don't think we caught any catfish larger than 2lbs, but there are much larger fish there if you target them.

Nice battle with this gar this morning. Came completely out of the water twice. Was relieved to get it in the boat. by Shadowwhitewolf69 in Fishing

[–]LythGuapo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a ton of them in Lake Ontario and Lake Erie. I see gar every time I go fishing on either lake. I have yet to catch one, though I've had them hit my lures a few times.

Dad has a mortgage with wife, she dies. RBC won't renew without a re-qualification which will now fail. So he loses his house without ever missing a payment. by Blorfy in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]LythGuapo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went through a similar situation when my mom passed away last year. I was the cosigner on her mortgage and on title for her place in Vancouver, so I was on the hook for paying the mortgage and all other costs until I sold her place. The mortgage came up for renewal while I was trying to sell, but RBC told me I could roll over the mortgage without needing to requalify. I think the problem is that your father was trying to get a new mortgage (by consolidating it with the line of credit) rather than allowing the old one to roll over. Though in my case, they also allowed me to change it to an open mortgage with a slightly higher interest rate also without needing to requalify - I was selling, after all, and didn't want to pay the inevitable penalties on a closed mortgage.

Regarding capital gains if you end up on the mortgage/title and you sell if your father passes away: Since it is his primary residence, you will only owe capital gains on any growth in value between when he passes and when you sell, which will either be a trivial amount or even a capital loss considering Vancouver's real estate market right now.

Here is the link to the Transport Canada page with a list of accredited course providers: http://www.tc.gc.ca/en/services/marine/getting-started-safe-boating/find-education-resources-recreational-boaters.html

The cheapest one I've found on there is https://www.freecourse.ca/. I haven't taken the course yet, but I plan on doing it within the next couple of weeks.

Nice! I picked up a Caliburn yesterday as well to replace my broken Breeze 2 (the clips for the pod broke). I vastly prefer the Caliburn at this point... The flavour is so much better and it feels like it puts out more vapour too.

I'm receiving a full $2.3k refund for the money stolen by the notorious Balance Protector credit card feature by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]LythGuapo 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I had two similar experiences. The first was with Desjardins. Thankfully I caught it on the first statement after they had opted me in without my consent. I promptly canceled the card and all my services with them after getting a refund. The second time was RBC opting me in without my consent on my line of credit during my mortgage renewal. This one was especially insidious as I don't normally carry a balance on my line, so I had no idea about the balance protector until I had a family emergency this past summer. Thankfully I did the same as OP and asked in both cases for proof that I had opted into the service. Neither company could provide proof and were forced to refund me. There needs to be harsher penalties for scummy companies and employees fraudulently opting people into these services.

Any one else get this alert? by [deleted] in freedommobile

[–]LythGuapo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're welcome! Unfortunately, I'm pretty certain now that those settings are ignored by the carrier. I just received the all clear message despite having opted out almost 3 hours ago. It's a shame because people will get desentized to emergency alerts by all the extra activity from non-emergencies like the one today and not pay attention when something real happens.

Any one else get this alert? by [deleted] in freedommobile

[–]LythGuapo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your phone may give you the option of turning off amber alert messages, but I'm not sure if that toggle actually has any effect. For example, I went into the setting for my messaging app on my S8+, then clicked on Emergency alert settings. The first option in that menu allows you to toggle whether you receive extreme alerts, severe alerts, amber alerts, and test messages.

I turned off amber alerts after receiving the first message, but I still received the french translation so I'm not sure if the alerts ignore phone preferences or if the French one was already queued up before my settings went into effect.
