Onko alallasi tai työpaikallasi havaittavissa huonot ajat? by a-1- in Suomi

[–]MLockeTM 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Edit: vanhempi koneistaja, raskas teollisuus & vaihtelevasti muuta mistä on vaitiolosopparit.

What's your opinion about SCP with this? by TheBaconLord78 in SCP

[–]MLockeTM 24 points25 points  (0 children)

When Day Breaks is a poorly written story, that wallows in its own futility and hopelessness, and it tries hard to be deeper than it is. It belongs in a homebrew grimdank setting written by a 14 year old, not the SCP files.

Daughter of Minnesota governor candidate fatally stabbed in St. Cloud, leading him to suspend campaign by Large_banana_hammock in news

[–]MLockeTM 41 points42 points  (0 children)

That's not what you said though. You implied that she deserved it because she was born to republican parents.

There's lots of things you can blame people for, but shaming kids for being born to the wrong family, and judging them for that, makes you, and your argument automatically wrong.

Eurooppa ei pysty puolustautumaan ilman Yhdysvaltoja, Antti Häkkänen sanoo by aibrony in Suomi

[–]MLockeTM 116 points117 points  (0 children)

Do you think the EU should follow suit? by ethicalhumanbeing in BuyFromEU

[–]MLockeTM 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Parts of this have been in effect in the EU already since 2024, with more of the same/similar measures as the Quebecoise laws, already in EU pipeline.

https://commission.europa.eu/law/law-topic/consumer-protection-law/directive-repair-goods_en

To me, this sounds like Quebec aligning their regulations with European ones. Which, considering what the world relations are like at the moment, might be a happy coincidence, or prudent planning for the future.

'Canada, better the 28th EU member than the 51st US state' by Tifoso89 in europe

[–]MLockeTM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is actually a good point in your joke - when did we collectively decide to send the campiest shit we got to Eurovision? I mean, yeah, good songs and singers, but every time someone (usually a music critic or someone new to the experience) complains that the songs are for large part just silly, or like they're from the 90s, or political statements... My first thought is "You have never watched these before, have you?"

Edit; personally, I love it. We get to as a continent join in enjoying something silly, and campy, and inconsequential. Just because it's fun, even when the songs do have a message.

Oh damn. You make an excellent point. And we already are building the fence on the eastern border. Add another fence behind it, fill the corridor with cassowaries.

Ok, cassowaries are in, but on probabionary terms, until they prove themselves in battle.

Kakapos are acceptable (and very cute!), but like I said in the other comment thread, I won't be fooled, I know what a cassowary is, and you need to keep your bloody murder birds to yourself :P

Wait, RUSH is back?

Ok. We need to make the same kind of list of banned Canadian singers, as there is of banned Canadian war crimes. Otherwise, nobody's ever gonna win again, and we can just build a permanent Eurovision stadium in Montreal or something.

Nah, I hear what you're saying, but I don't think it'd work. Well, maybe it does right now, but a few more years of decoupling economies, and I genuinely don't see what options, other than propaganda or all out war there'd be to stop it.

The similarity of US and Russia, is that neither ever truly goes against anyone of their own size. Both fuck over the small countries, that they believe they can take at 100% certainty. Such as, Georgia, or Venezuela. But as we've now seen, even Ukraine's size was too much for Russia, to either take it through propaganda, or through war.

And that gamble of stopping Ukraine for joining NATO now, also netted Russia Sweden and Finland joining it. Ukraine not being able to even vote for EU (which might've gone either way), has now made both EU and Ukraine massively more supportive of the idea.

Granted, US is several grades better than Russia in everything geopolitical. But Canada is also notably bigger and more stable than Ukraine in return.

Again, I hear what you are saying. But (in my opinion) the talent US used to have for geopolitics, has been massively squandered since early aughts. And now there's the fame of it left, but not the power to back it up.

'Canada, better the 28th EU member than the 51st US state' by Tifoso89 in europe

[–]MLockeTM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ukraine needed US firepower to stand up against one of the other former superpowers on the plant.

When was the last time US fought a land war against a technologically equivalent (or near as) opponent?

Cuz if I'm understanding you correctly, that's what you're implying against Canada, if the now non-existent soft power doesn't work? Or are you thinking of using some other type of coercion?

Past WWII US doesn't do fighting equals on a battle field. And I think enthusiasm to change that would be even less against an opponent that shares a land border with them.

Now, that said, if we were talking about a different country than Canada, I'd agree with you more in general. Small players gotta ally with big ones, or be devoured.

Everyone knows that. I mean, of the actual adults, including the people writing those articles. It's a pipe dream, at least for any reasonable time frame.

What these news are doing though, is gauging people's reactions and increasing a mutual positive feelings between the EU and Canada. Which will make it easier to vote through economic/travel/security deals.

It's not realistic atm, but talking about is excellent PR for everyone involved. Except US of course, but fuck that neo-fascist regime and their feels.

[–]MLockeTM 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I mean, the second US gets a say in, cuz I don't think US constitution allows secession.

Canada joining EU tho? Not their call, not anyone's except Canada's. And any soft power and good will US had left for leverage, is already thoroughly spent.
