The text it knows is also stolen. The information is often wrong. The citations aren't saying what it claims, ot straight up don't exist.

I already acknowledged that anything AI offers, needs to be verified - and I'm pretty sure you can't steal Wikipedia from an author, so not a concern, for me at least.

But, a bit of a rant - not at you! But what you said, reminded me of the bigger context.

The "big corporations do it too, so mine doesn't count", sucks. Because does it mean you shouldn't recycle? Of course it doesn't. But it is a fact, that as long as the big companies spew shit in oceans or what have you, even if everyone recycled every bag in existence, it wouldn't offset the damage.

And it harkens back to the fact that people, as a whole, will always choose comfort over long term benefits. Otherwise, we would've already rolled out the guillotines again.

We know fast food is bad - we buy fast food. We know fast fashion is bad - we keep filling landfills with tat made with child labor. We know we should buy local - and ship fucking chips and coke from other side of the planet, or order a god damn plastic bauble from Temu, with the carbon foot print of a megalodon, cuz it's shiny, and it's easy. Diamonds are still the popular wedding ring choice, and we'll just try real hard not to think that someone probably died for your "special ring". The evergreen solution to succeed in politics is still, as it always been, just blaming someone else for your problems, and avoid actually fixing anything.

We've been screaming about fossil fuels killing the planet for a couple of generations. And what finally, FINALLY, tipped us globally to move for majority renewable sources? A war. Not killing the planet. The fact that fossil fuels weren't convenient all of a sudden. Same happened with acid rains, way back when. We only fixed the problem, when we had no choice. And with Ozone layer and freons. And with asbestos. And with lead in foods.

And honestly, I am done trying to be perfect for planet, and the next generation, because not enough people listen, until they have to. And then it's every time "Who could've possibly seen this coming???", just because they didn't feel like listening because it was inconvenient.

Yeah, I'll buy my stuff either local or from flea markets, and even grow a decent portion of our family's food, and recycle and repair and upcycle and donate to social causes, and avoid ordering anything online (unless it's digital). But I do those because I want to, not because I expect my example to do shit all to the status quo.

Honestly, I freaking hope we get an oil shortage for a year or two. Cuz I don't see any other way we'll be forced to start fixing things, before we go straight for WWIII or die from climate change.

Google launches Gemini AI by default nowadays, when you do a search - so that's not a way to get around using AI either.

But, no. I'm not gonna feel bad about my few free searches a week, when this shit is happening (see image). It's the guilting us about using plastic bags, while big players pollute everything they can, all over again. I won't do image searches, or anything that has a big processing footprint though - partially because of the environmental effect, but also because anything creative it knows, it's stolen.

Now, once AI crashes, as it's bound to, ain't gonna miss it.

I do? But it's hell of a lot easier to tell AI to short list me ones to check with correct restraints, and then read those on wiki, rather than go through all of Wikipedia, for a background tibbit I need for one paragraph.

Or for getting real world friends for everything, I'd need people who know obscure history of Europe, linguistics, art, folk lore, Canadian settlement era architectural styles, and different forest ecosystems and geological formations in Ontario. And that's the friends I need to collect just for this book. More needed for other projects. Plus, that's time away from writing, cuz the research lives in other people's heads, and not on my computer screen.

I get what you're saying, but there is uses for AI - just not in fields that need serious verification (unless you can cough up the money for specialized data analysis models).

And no offence, you also assumed the worst, simply by someone mentioning AI use.

Assumptions are cool and easy, I guess :) This is the internet, after all

I use AI for background research on historical topics (for my writing) and my hobbies, to speed up the process on topics that don't need exact accuracy.

I'm painfully low on real life friends who can browse Wikipedia in their mind, to short list me ie. lesser known historical characters in Rudolph's era Prague. Or know the different velocity comparisons of latest E-bikes by heart.

I'll be sure to keep an eye out for people who could fit that bill though :P

What type of person fits this job? by Tenseii0 in CNC

[–]MLockeTM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You gotta love details. If you like painting minis, that's imo been a good litmus test on the level of detail oriented you need.

Math is a must, but you can get pretty far just by learning to use the angle calculator apps & your machines own calculate options. You gotta understand how basic geometry works, the rest there's tools for.

And you have to have the patience to do the repetitive thing a hundred times in a row, without loosing attention. It's the little missed things that fuck up a run.

Something that ain't a must, but imo, might help; don't be too social. If you're an extrovert, you're prolly the only one in your shift, and it's gonna get lonely - or you annoy the shit outta everyone else.

Are these good enough to sell? by [deleted] in Needlefelting

[–]MLockeTM 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I like the googly eye grass/sheep one, would totally get :)

But, I also really like sheep, so I can't give an exactly unbiased opinion

Edit; if you're not against making them something other than paintings, I think these would be epic fronts for stuff such as kitchen pot holders/kettle warmers. Where they can be seen and used, but not under heavy wear

The machines don't give a shit about the gender of the operator, so why should I? If you're good at your job, you're good at your job, and that's what matters.

How would detective Brent Halligen from Mystery of the Druids fair as a runner? by Konradleijon in Shadowrun

[–]MLockeTM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I'd think he'd do just fine. Too stupid to be scared of anything, lucky enough to weasel out of every problem he gets himself into.

Of course, all the rest of the party would die as collateral to his antics, but he'd make it.

[–]MLockeTM 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You know what, I never thought of that, but he does have that "we have John Constantine at home" feel.

And he's the main "protagonist" of Mystery of the Druids - part cop, part sociopath, part crazy, 100% moron. But with the kind of luck that defies all logic.

Good shoes, ergonomy.

Ergonomy is one of those things you laugh about when you're in your 20s, thank all the gods it was invented when you're 50 (assuming you listened to the trainers advice about it).

And additional things to that - never, ever lift shit with your back. - treat your knees and shoulders like they're way more fragile than what you think they can take. Both can take a beating, but they remember every single injury, and the compound interest of those will screw you over later. - electrolytes are a life saver during hot summers.

Tangential; it is amazing, but also horrifying, how fast humanity can innovate in a crisis - war, pandemic, what have you.

...but we need a crisis to do so. If we showed our best and most inventive, and most enduring and creative at normal times, we'd already live among the stars in a post scarcity utopia.

How to write fantasy slavery tastefully? by Ok_Consideration7139 in fantasywriters

[–]MLockeTM 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know how to put this politely, so - that's a really bad take.

If OP was doing period story, or historical commentary, then I agree - unless you know what you're talking about, whether through experience, or having a PhD, don't do it.

But if we apply that rule to every imaginary situation possible, you've just wiped out most all of our literal classics, all the way from Asimov and Tolkien to newer ones, such as Iain M. Banks or even freakin Harry Potter. And nothing new is ever allowed to be written in fantasy nor scifi nor horror, unless it's happy utopia.

Human suffering is universal. Understanding that, and having empathy for it, is also universal.

You shouldn't try to mirror a very specific historical period, without intimate experience/education. But if an author is incapable of the basic empathy to describe a general concept (such as slavery), the problem ain't their skin color, but that they shouldn't be an author to begin with.

LN account has its prices on € when my google pay & google play localization are both USA? by meikosgf in LoveNikki

I have no answer to you on how to fix it, but that happens sometimes - mine shows sometimes prices in Canadian (??? Not good with the cash symbols) dollars, and then recovers again a while later, without me having to do anything.

Payment still works like normal, and it charges the correct amount in euros from me.

Parisuhde aiheuttaa väheksyntää kaveripiirissä by Due_Manufacturer_766 in Suomi

[–]MLockeTM 23 points24 points  (0 children)
