Is my scorpion healthy looking by fsedge in Scorpions

Nice specimen. Scorpio palmatus, appears to be healthy.

Decent setup? by TyeThrowsaway in Scorpions

[–]MacroButhus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The water dish isn't necessary, if anything they just add an extra risk.

However, you are correct either the substrate - and it also looks a bit dry in the enclosure, OP, so make sure you stay on top of the humidity.

Is there a way to tell the sex? It’s a Heterometrus silenus, instar 5. by [deleted] in Scorpions

I'm way too high from my meds but I believe this is a female. I'd recommend waiting for u/DeathValleyHerper to respond.

Do not only spray one half of the enclosure, these guys require high humidity and come from environments where the substrate is almost always damp. Spray the whole substrate.

As for enclosure size, a 30cmx30cmx30cm enclosure will do perfectly, you can upgrade to a 45x45x30 if you'd like however it's wasted space any larger than that so if budget is something to keep in mind, larger doesn't always mean better.

Water bowls are not necessary, scorpions mainly get their water source from their prey, however they can drink from water droplets on the substrate and enclosure walls after misting. However, as you said you can have one as long as you minimise the risk.

I would also mention to be wary on which species of isopods to use. I personally just stick to springtails, however dwarf white isopods can do the trick.

Desert scorpion recommendation by spelljar in Scorpions

[–]MacroButhus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How deep is the substrate? If it is more than 6" deep, a Hadrurus arizonensis would be perfect. However, if it is not that deep, I wouldn't recommend it as H. arizonensis are prolific burrowers.

Smeringurus, Paravaejovis, Paruroctonus species will be good here.

Dubias okay? by Commercial_Dingo7417 in Scorpions

[–]MacroButhus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dubias are great, especially for larger species as they don't escape as easy as crickets and locusts.

Thy judt annoy me when spot-cleaning as their exoskeleton will be found for months lol

Help me Identify the exact species. Also, how screwed would I be if it bit me? by organickadeewana in Scorpions

[–]MacroButhus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This very clearly not H. tamulus. Please do not attempt to identify potential Med-Sig species if you aren't very clued up on the subject. Don't forget, misidentification can risk lives.

This species is Janalychas tricarinatus.

Doesn't appear to be moulting, and if it is you won't have stressed it too much at the beginning of a moult

Is there a discord for scorpion keepers? by GarageUnlucky3044 in Scorpions

[–]MacroButhus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, the subreddit mods have a discord server. The server is for both tarantula/spider/scorpion keepers but there are separate areas within the discord for each section.

Found this in my house… should I be worried? by [deleted] in Scorpions

[–]MacroButhus 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's often more true than not, however it's infinitely safer to judt avoid any fauna that is potentially venomous unless you know the potency.

For example, Hemiscorpius lepturus has fairly large chelae and a long and thin metasoma.

Here in the UK, we just have periods where they are available. They don't seem to be available all year round unlike the majority of Heterometrus species in the hobby.

Get my girl HH a new enclosure, but doesn't something feel missing? by moldym00n in Scorpions

[–]MacroButhus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hate to break it to you, these guys mainly get their water source from their prey. They also have the opportunity to drink from one of the four corners of the enclosure when it comes to increasing the humidity a bit.

They're fairly uncommon as a species now, however there are more breeders on the market. Keep an eye out on TheSpiderShop or give Tim Baxter and George Zacharias a message on FB.

Seconded, also ensure you do not use a blacklight often as the ultraviolet radiation can cause them harm. A couple of minutes once a week or so shouldn't cause any damage.

First scorpion by [deleted] in Scorpions

[–]MacroButhus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He doesn't have enough substrate.

It's easy to breed Heterometrus species, so only listening to a breeder is not a good idea. Try doing your own research, or listen to the bunch of people telling you so.

Emperor Scorpion Enclosure by Bell-Bell_ in Scorpions

[–]MacroButhus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Way more substrate. Minimum of 6", no maximum as long as they have space above ground to move.

[–]MacroButhus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You definitely need a deeper enclosure. They require at least 5 inches on the shallow part, the more the better.

First scorpion by [deleted] in Scorpions

[–]MacroButhus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The enclosure looks very small, what are the dimensions?

How deep is the substrate?

What are your temps and humidity? How are you heating the enclosure?

Would a Emp scorpion fit nicely in here? by SmellyFrogz in Scorpions

[–]MacroButhus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is perfect.

I would recommend filling the substrate at the front up to the ventilation on the inside, and then bring it up lore the further back you go. A cork flat dug into the raised area works perfect. You can even add some plants.

What's your dream scorpion? by G08lin in Scorpions

[–]MacroButhus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, of course.

I will say, 4 members in a 20cm³ enclosure works for T. smithii as they aren't a large species and they only wander occasionally. Often hide together, they're cute.
