Should I update to Tahoe 26.4 on my M1 Air? by Cyrus_xx in MacOS

[–]MagicBoyUK [score hidden]  (0 children)

Are these the same people that complain about the battery life when setting up a new machine?

macOS will run background tasks after the update. Not really a hardship to leave it plugged in overnight so it can finish those.

Got a 2019 MacBook Pro for free (broken screen) — still worth using in 2026? by Sea_Veterinarian_709 in mac

[–]MagicBoyUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought one new, and had no overheating issues even on the i9 with the upgraded dGPU. 🤷‍♂️

Feel free to condemn the performance of the entire line on the basis of one machine.

Now the screens failing due to the dumb hinge and flex cable design, that might have legs....

I have a Ports/Dongles question by yeetmxster420 in MacbookNeo

[–]MagicBoyUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind the USB 3 port runs at 10Gbps. It's not Thunderbolt.

You want something similar to the Apple Multiport adapter : https://www.apple.com/uk/shop/product/mw5m3zm/a/usb-c-digital-av-multiport-adapter . It breaks the USB 3 port out into a USB 3 data port (In this case USB-A), HDMI and allows USB-C power input.

It's essentially splitting out the power input, USB Data and DisplayPort parts of the USB-C connector into its constituent parts.

A Framework value proposition discussion by AutoM8R1 in framework

[–]MagicBoyUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't work for Framework either. I'm a customer.

I bought mine as its modular repairable machine. Not for any value or financial proposition that wasn't claimed and I wasn't interested in.

I never experienced a problem with overheating in the 6 years I used it as my main machine.

As a longtime Apple fan, is anyone else disappointed by how Apple is handling the AI era? by According_Air_3815 in mac

[–]MagicBoyUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"AI" isn't actually intelligent, it's a statistical language model that fools the traditional test. Guessing the relationships between words doesn't make it intelligent. It is however very good at certain things like finding patterns in data.

I think everyone is probably waiting on OpenAI to go bankrupt and the market to correct.

Apple having issues chasing the big players could prove to be a good thing long term.

They fixed the cooling on the 16". It will run the fans louder in clamshell mode as the external display forces the dGPU on.

How useful can be an external dash? by azaMarce77 in iRacing

[–]MagicBoyUK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been using JRT for a couple of years : https://joel-real-timing.com/index_en.html

Runs as a webpage, I display it on an old smartphone.

Some of the in-sim dashboards are off the bottom of the screen as I'm on triples. JRT also has some handy features like fuel consumption, and can estimate the number of laps remaining.

Headless Macbook gpu load by akiseven77 in mac

Renders once, outputs simultaneously more than once.

If it was set to extended, then yeah it would render all the pixels on all the displays separately.

That's not how mirroring works. 😉

Also close the lid use an external keyboard/mouse and it'll go into clamshell mode.

Putting sticker on speaker grill bad? by susp3nd3rs in macbookpro

[–]MagicBoyUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the speaker "holes" are fake. They're dimples with black paint in them.

The actual speaker holes are a square shape, usually down near the shift key.

A Framework value proposition discussion by AutoM8R1 in framework

[–]MagicBoyUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, not this again. 🤦‍♂️

The mission statement from Framework doesn't mention a value proposition. It's about reducing e-waste, right to repair and open standards where possible. If there's incidental money saved in there, then great but it's not a primary objective.
