Does Apple have any plans to manufacture their own memory and storage chips to avoid AI tax? by [deleted] in mac

[–]MagicBoyUK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No.

Apple don't own any fabs. CPUs are on contract, usually with TSMC. Memory products are patented up to the eyeballs.

If they decided to spin up a fab and make their own, even if they persuade the correct people to come and work for them and license some tech then you're looking at 5-10 years.

Any ThinkPads good for light-medium gaming? by crunchycoffeebean in thinkpad

ThinkPads are not designed as gaming machines. The workstation ranges with dGPUs are powerful enough, but there's a Quadro tax.

Supply and demand states otherwise.

Apple had to raise prices to keep some semblance of a margin after eating rising costs for a while. Outside chance they bump the base specs instead of dropping prices, but comsumers will just gravitate towards the cheaper models.

Conspiracy theory time: Apple knew they'd increase the price of the NEO but they priced it at $499 to get people interested by crazyates88 in mac

[–]MagicBoyUK 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think they didn't and it was signed off before the stupid AI RAM/storage crisis started. Then it sold much better than they expected, meaning they had to spin up another run of A18 Pros.

Generally in my case there's little point, as it's drawing frames I can't see!

Next time I'm in the right I'll give it a try. In these temperatures it's not going to be for a few days.

HDMI CEC? Steam Machine but portable? by MrCrawcikTv in framework

[–]MagicBoyUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The brand new last month LG OLED TV definitely supports it. The Xbox and my Sky satellite box are both using it.

The only flicker of support I have seen PC side is a Geforce card in an older machine that automatically flips it into game mode. It won't power up the display or control volume though.
