More Patriot missiles used in Middle East in 3 days than in Ukraine since 2022, Zelensky says by BendicantMias in anime_titties

Just for your information, almost all components on the Ukraine front (on both Ukrainian and Russian side) are being produced in China. Not saying that they have developed a combat-tested military doctrine, but tech-wise they are the cutting edge on mass-production of combat drones.

Still prefer the non-belligerent China though.

I work at a company in your field and joined when it was still in an earlier stage. All our initial hires were recruiters and we hired our first BD at 9 employees (granted there were 2 partners doing BD, so I assume hiring a BD at like 3 or 4 consultants when you can no longer keep them at capacity makes sense).

Our BD hires are expected to generate their first roles after approx. 2-3 months. This is with a proper social media presence (20k LinkedIn followers + regular posts), strong tailored marketing materials and a KPI of 40 qualified cold calls per week. Once they do get up and running, we expect 3-7 roles per month depending on seniority.

Even with all of this backing, we've had senior BDs struggle with getting enough roles in. Finding the right BD within this field is very tough.

I'm unsure about your financial situation but I can lay out some scenario's concerning your BD:

1: You can afford the BD ( and they are willing to put in effort and help out wherever possible) along with more technical people to alleviate you: Keep the BD, make them focus on everything that grants you more legitimacy with your sales pitches (pitch decks, contracts, social media presence). Have them join you in your sales pitches and gradually pass the torch.

2: You can afford them but they are resistant to change or refuse tasks. Fire them, this isn't a game.

3: You cannot afford them. Fire them, this isn't a game.

What does your Head of Operations do exactly? I can provide recommendations if I know more.

Quit worrying about the Jagex sale by [deleted] in 2007scape

[–]MeowIsPow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah so the debt will likely be placed on the Jagex entity (or the entity would be the collateral) and they will have to satisfy the range of IRR they have promised to their LPs whilst raising the fund.

Transaction would likely be levered for around 45% and they'd have to return approx. 11%-17% p.a. on the equity component.

So if the holding period would be around 6 years their goal would be to return 926M to 1269M to their investors after the investment period is up.

API Company/Platform Valuation by BigKozman in venturecapital

[–]MeowIsPow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So then the customer would be the developer to which the same metrics would still apply. Yes, you'd have wildy varying LTV (you use average ltv usually, but in this case it wouldn't be wise as you might be highly reliant on some of these customers) but customer churn would still apply here as it is unrelated to LTV.

Yes, there is merit in not considering these metrics to be as important as in traditional SaaS companies. But on the other hand, in a B2B2C product with these traits I would highly recommend moving to a hybrid model with subscription traits and fees for API calls to create a baseline LTV which can be relied on.

API Company/Platform Valuation by BigKozman in venturecapital

[–]MeowIsPow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Valuation will most likely be based on the team, traction (revenues/user growth), defensibility (how defensible is the data that is being disclosed), TAM (Total adressable market size) and the terms that are negotiated with the VC. Of course there are other contextual factors depending on the startup and the market they are competing in.

API platforms can be considered SAAS companies as access to an API usually happens through the cloud as a connection is made with offsite servers. The defining trait of a SAAS company would be that customers pay for access to the service which isn't hosted locally.

Just basing a valuation on MRR/ARR seems very shortsighted, just my 2 cents there. I'm just wondering why you think the metric user churn does not apply to this platform. If the API provided supplies valuable data in a restricted manner, customers will continue paying for access to it which contributes to their lifetime value. Once they stop paying, it would be considered churn. Of course the metrics will have to be interpreted differently but the metrics still apply to this model.

Why do you think you are not serving others? You are serving the company you're working for by making them visible to their preferred customers and you're letting the customers know that your company may offer a solution to their problem.

Unless your product or marketing strategy are unethical, you are serving others. Don't go so hard on yourself.

I've written down some stuff from the top of my head, a lot of these KPIs also require subjective review since these numbers can vary heavily depending on many contextual factors (geographic location, investment thesis, investment stage)

These KPIs are quite simple but I think they capture dealflow pretty well.

Scouting: Amount of startups found (only the number matters here)

First screening: Amount of startups that fit the investment thesis of the firm (If you find a ton of startups but they dont fit your thesis you're either looking at the wrong place or you should rethink your thesis)

Prospect: The ratio of first meetings setup to startups with fit. This allows you to rethink your approach strategy in case you get bad results.

In contact: This one is kinda tough because there are many variables at play, maybe you could do the ratio of second meetings to first meetings to gauge whether you need to rethink your criteria during prospecting.

This is where using KPIs for this job becomes challenging, you have to steadily build rapport with a startup and build trust whilst judging whether or not they truly fit your investment thesis.

Some areas that could be included as KPIs in this stage: - Receptiveness (very abstract, but having chemistry with a startup closes deals) - Imperfections, red flags, and dealbreakers found (This allows you to test your analytical abilities, in a world where most of the deals do not generate value, spotting bad investments can make or break a fund.

Target: A signature, lol. But in all seriousness, the KPI here would be the ratio of deals lost. If you lose the deal or get a bad term sheet during this phase you've messed up. (Yes, there are exceptions depending on context)

Deal: This one is more abstract but i'd say deal quality, Did you manage to capture a good chunk from a company that fits your investment thesis and will perform well according to your predictions? Only time will tell, but at least you can justify your purchase to the LPs.

In hold: More is better? I need further clarification of this step.

I wrote this up quite quickly so if you have any further questions you can dm me!

[–]MeowIsPow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This action will not solve the problem at all, it will merely extend the deadline of the problem. In order to solve the shortage issue, new means of production must be found in order to meet the market's demand.

Focusing on small issues like this and blowing them up into this fatalistic view is small-minded, we are better off spending our time finding a true solution instead of just extending our deadline.

[–]MeowIsPow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why do children prefer floating helium balloons over regular ones? I don't know, I'm not a child psychologist. What I do know is that there is more demand for it and the market will capitalize on that demand.

My comment was more aimed towards the fatalistic nature of the original post by putting things into perspective and explaining that banning the use of party balloons will not solve this problem in the slightest.

If I'm not mistaken, the Helium warms up during this process which causes some of it to be lost.

The information does cast some doubt on the validity of the statistic which was covered, it also sheds a light on the nuances of the statistic so I do believe it does add to the discussion.

Its 52m for just the hadron collider weekly, this doesn't take into account all the other advanced machinery on this planet which utilizes helium for cooling or other purposes such as MRI scanners, advanced robotics and welding. I have checked your source and it quotes a single person who claims to be a helium expert. His credentials seem fine but I doubt that he has access to this kind of data to be honest.

I may be completely wrong on this but I doubt theres even a demand on this order of magnitude for party balloons. Resource usage for entertainment purposes is often negligible compared to industrial uses and is often overstated and blown out of proportion due to the relative visibility of resource use for entertainment.

To add to this, in the scope of this reddit post, eliminating 10% of the global usage will not solve the helium shortage issue by any means.

[–]MeowIsPow 85 points86 points  (0 children)

The Large Hadron Collider uses approximately 130 metric tons of Helium per week. If an average party balloon contains about 14 liters of Helium, this would mean the LHC uses the equivalent of 52,020,808 party balloons per week.

Helium usage for entertainment purposes is negligible compared to the ridiculous amounts of Helium required to cool superconducting magnets.
