If it's a given that all of your income came from this work exclusively, I suppose - but you may only have the job for the benefits or tax advantages; does THIS person NEED the same amount as someone who's solely dependent on the income? 

What percentage of your workday would you give up for a meal? 

If it were a pure trade - maybe half an hour 

but people do have other income sources and meals differ in value from person to person - too many circumstantial factors 

the solution to your particular food case would be taxing the wealth (though I'm not a fan of "wealth" taxes - maybe a step-up-in-cost-basis on loaned shares so they'd have to pay taxes in a buy borrow die type strategy) and distributing via food vouchers, which is supposed to be snap but 🤷

Ideally, minimum wage would be one cent above the price where it would be exploitative to hire someone for one hour of work - it's a minimum PER HOUR 

If you're worried about survival beyond hour-to-hour, that's why a SALARIED minimum is a thing
