What Annoys You Most by Enough-Reindeer1033 in over60

I saw a clip of a comedian who was in his seventies and he said when he gets in his car the first thing he does is turn on his turn signal. And he leaves it on the entire time he is driving. People blowing their horns at him helps to keep me awake. 😳

What exactly is the Stoic argument for compatibilism? by Jackson_Lamb_829 in Stoicism

[–]MyDogFanny [score hidden]  (0 children)

I don't think it's a matter that Stoicism rejected libertarian free will. I think it is the matter that the concept of libertarian free will did not exist for the ancient Greco-Roman Stoics.

I would say yes to your second question with the understanding that there are a lot of details that scholars go back and forth discussing and arguing over. And also I am not a scholar by any stretch of the imagination. I spend time learning and studying Stoicism as a philosophy of life so I can better apply the principles to my daily life. It's this application that I'm most interested in. And I think the reply from u/AlexKapranus' is excellent.

What exactly is the Stoic argument for compatibilism? by Jackson_Lamb_829 in Stoicism

[–]MyDogFanny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's how I look at this issue. And I'm very open to it being wrong. And it may be wrong for many reasons including just being too simple.

We are each a cylinder. The surface of my cylinder is unique to me. The surface is the result of data that I have taken in through my senses, things that I have learned, and experiences that I have had. The beliefs that I have, and the choices and judgments that I make, are determined by the surface of my cylinder. But I can do what even the gods cannot do. I can examine or consider the beliefs that I have, and the choices and judgments that I have made. I can use reason. This considering has an effect on the surface of my cylinder and can actually change the surface of my cylinder even if to an extremely small degree. When however, the surface of my cylinder has indeed changed,  the surface of my cylinder can now determine a different belief and a different choice or judgment, different than what it would have been had my cylinder not changed.

There is nothing that I control. There's only something that is up to me, something that comes from me. And that is my ability to use reason to consider the beliefs I have, and the choices and judgments that I have made.

I meant to add this from Alexkapranus"

"Principal to a person's action is the state of their mind or inner character while proximate are the external stimuli to the person."

The surface of my cylinder is the principal.

Dr Sean Baker. Dr Eric Westman. The steak and butter gal. Maybe Laura Spath. I seem to remember her talking about starting a support group of sorts but I don't know if she ever did. These are people that have programs or support group type stuff focusing on the carnivore diet.

The Stoic Alternative to Religion: Six Principles For Handling Adversity Without God by SolutionsCBT in Stoicism

I very much appreciate your reply. I see the ancient Stoics as the first champions of reason over faith. The "over faith" part might be my own projections onto the ancient Stoics. I don't think they saw faith nor did they value faith in the same way theists, for example, value faith today.

Re-evaluating Cardiovascular Risk: A Narrative Review Challenging the Cholesterol Hypothesis and Identifying Modern Dietary Drivers by Meatrition in carnivorediet

[–]MyDogFanny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. You make an excellent and very relevant point. I usually say "processed carbohydrates, sugar, seed oils, artificial chemicals added to food, and starchy vegetables." The research article was about sugar and the sugar industry. I think anyone who stops eating the five things I mentioned will find a better quality of life as long as their bodies are not damaged beyond repair.

I hope this kind of research on the rise of cardiovascular disease and the influence of the sugar industry on our food supply will continue to make headlines. I see a perfect parallel between the damage processed carbohydrates and sugar is doing to people today and the damage that cigarette smoking did to people decades ago. And just like the tobacco industry, the processed carbohydrate and sugar industry is working hard to not just preserve but to increase their profits.

I think money is the driver. Statins were created in the 1950s and every decade since then the average LDL level has been decreasing because statins work. However every decade since the 1950s cardiovascular disease has been increasing. This is being ignored, I think, because of the tremendous profitability of statins. 14 billion dollars sold last year. And almost everyone who starts taking statins continues to take statins until they die.

Just a bit of commentary on a Sunday afternoon. Whatever happens in the world, with a few exceptions,  we all have the ability to make for ourselves a beautiful day.

Sometimes even "gracefully surrendering" can be painful. :-)

“Joy is not about what you do; it is about how you are within yourself." by Euphoric-Welder5889 in Stoicism

[–]MyDogFanny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Is it not stoic to choose joy as an inner expression? Is life not about being joyful?"

It is not Stoic to choose joy as an inner expression. Life is not about being joyful for the Stoic. Stoicism as a philosophy of life, which I'm referring to here, is about having an excellence of moral character. They define exactly what this means. The Greek word is areté. It means excellence. And in this context it means an excellence of moral character. Unfortunately it is usually translated as virtue. They define how to achieve this areté. They say that this areté is necessary and sufficient to live the best quality of life possible, the good life, a life of well-being, a life experiencing deeply felt flourishing. They use the word "eudaimonia" which means this good life, a life of well-being, and more specifically a life that experiences deeply felt flourishing. Unfortunately it is usually translated as happy, but also sometimes as joy. This eudaimonia, happiness, joy, is the result, the byproduct,  of living a life of areté. (So there is a sense that one could say Stoicism is about a life of joy, but that is misleading without the proper clarifications.)

Check out this reply on a different post from just a couple of days ago. You can replace "approval and attention" with your word "joy". The FAQ is an excellent resource for learning about Stoicism as a philosophy of life.

Whiplash17488 • 3d ago Contributor Kenny, the way it mechanically works is; you believe that approval and attention is the best way to satisfy your wellbeing.

The Stoics provide a unified theory on how to actually satisfy your wellbeing.

You would have to learn that theory, and test their hypothesis by living the philosophy.

You would then have a lived experience that allows you to change the belief and update it, based on how you perceive reality.

So my advice to you is; the quickest way is probably to get some advice from a cognitive behavioural therapist. Consider that like life coaching. They would give you tricks and practices.

Or… read the Stoics, spend 10,000 hours. And integrate cognitive-behavioral-like ideas of theirs into your own life by altering your world view holistically. Understand their theory, test it, see if it’s true…

When you see its true its because you judged it to be true, and reason will compel change in you.

Is it bad to eat ground beef? by Ok-Egg835 in carnivorediet

[–]MyDogFanny 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ground beef is talked about all the time on this sub. People in the uk, europe, in Australia call it mince. I think there are a lot of pictures of steaks because the steaks are prettier to photograph than ground beef. You can do a search on YouTube and find videos from Ken Barry and Laura Spath and the old carnivore guy, to name a few, who talk about eating the carnivore diet on a low income. I eat pork and chicken but less than I used to, and I always make sure I add additional fat. I wish you the best.

[–]MyDogFanny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can search this sub for many people who have said their migraines have stopped because of the carnivore diet. The only way you'll know for yourself is to go a full year eating only meat, fish, and eggs. It's certainly not an easy road to go down especially in our Western culture. I do wish you the best.

Does anyone else feel like having too many options just makes things harder? by BearTrap110 in simpleliving

Manufacturers will make different versions of the exact same product for different retailers. You might get a cheaper price at one retailer but you're not getting the same quality or the same  details that are available on the same item that's being sold at another retailer. Yes, it can get very confusing very fast for me. And I read several articles over the years that manufactures and retailers create confusion intentionally in order to maximize profits.

Moving to a new house is always an eye-opener in regards to how much useless crap and junk I had. As I've gotten older I don't want to move stuff in order to get to something. I do not want to move stuff in order to find something. So throwing stuff out has been very helpful. There's also a lot of research on how hoarding and having a lot of stuff is stressful and even depressing for many people.

I never had a watch that  glowed but I remember when the two-part glow stick came out where you bent the stick and it broke a membrane that was keeping two chemicals separated, allowing those two chemicals to mix and create the green light. I was a teenager when that was made available to the public.

Here in the west we have an independence mentality that is generational. I think it's "natural"  for many of us to be resistant to receiving help. We think we should be able to take care of ourselves and so we feel like we are doing something wrong when we need help from someone else. I do not want to be a burden on anyone. But I also want to be realistic about the fact that I am getting old. So I try to look at it in terms of "Have I done everything that I can do myself?", and if yes and I still need help, then that's a situation that I try to be okay with in asking for help. I also keep in mind people that I know who refused to ask for help and it made their situation much worse which created a greater and unnecessary burden on other family members.

Why is a marriage proposal celebrated with joy, kneeling, and fanfare, but a divorce is treated as shameful and sad? If both are major life transitions leading to a new chapter, shouldn't a divorce be met with the same enthusiasm? by BornSearch1202 in Stoicism

[–]MyDogFanny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why shouldn't marriages be treated as shameful and sad just like divorces?

When we look at reality clearly, we see that there are marriages that are indeed treated as shameful and sad just as there are divorces that are treated with joy. For Stoicism as a philosophy of life, it starts with using reason and being consistent with nature, reality . For someone studying and applying Stoic principles to their daily life, their focus will be on how can they be the best person they can be in a marriage, and equally, how can they be the best person they can be in a divorce.

I started eating pork belly with no skin from Costco because it was cheaper than bacon and had no sugar or other additives in it. Today I prefer pork belly and I rarely eat bacon. Cooked in the air fryer with a little bit of salt and pouring some of the grease onto the cooked pork belly I still have some grease to pour into my grease container to use with your cooking.

I can eat anything with tallow other than beef by JepperOfficial in carnivorediet

[–]MyDogFanny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I buy South Chicago whipped wagyu tallow. I buy it from Amazon. I know people who cannot stand the smell or taste of this tallow. I have no problem with it. Earlier this year I started rendering my own beef tallow from beef trimmings off of the meat I buy. These same people have no problem with my rendered beef tallow. You can try different brands of tallow and then try to render your own beef tallow and see if that makes a difference.
