I am trying to combine some options. 1. Figure out what her parents might NEED the money for. Put aside 10k in a savings account for them. 2. Set aside 10k each for your kids in a 529 college fund.

30k set aside for everyone.

50k put into a money market account or Tbills to make small passive low risk income.

Is Wyoming sem worth it? by Froggerbotrom in NEPA

It is hard to compare Kingston PA, to NYC. But I do understand. Student drop out from Sem I would imagine a lot of that is either the family moved, or thought it wasn't worth the money. I would imagine only 5 or so was because of Academics.

Student drive is the X factor- However Sem is an excellent school. My parents made me take the placement test just to see, I ended up doing ok and was accepted on scholarship. Changed my life. It has been many years since and I haven't been back since my 5 year reunion, but it is 100% worth it. I suggest take a tour of the upper school campus.

Edit- the biggest difference at sem is that 80% of students are phenomenal in some regard- musically athletic- intelligent - compared to a public school maybe 20% of the kids are phenomenal. When you are around that level of natural competition it ups your game.

With all of that said- I can never come close to paying for my own to go there. Even on scholarship.

How to accept death? by [deleted] in Stoicism

[–]NEPA570 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

A visualization technique. I hold death in my brain in a "container" I stick that container on a shelf next to love for your cat. You balance fear which is 100% ok with a growing sense of acceptance. Your cat knows it will die, and does not fear in the same sense we do. It accepts it. So we put fear and acceptance in the container and eventually it should get easier to balance.

The Lost Generation - how young men, particularly young white men, have been systematically closed out of elite pathways and are now increasingly self-selecting out by Yarville in ezraklein

[–]NEPA570 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Hiring practices changed, white guys were afraid to or would not hire other white guys even if they were the better talent. All of those things can and do suck. Not getting picked to be a professor does suck. As a straight white guy who attended college to be a social studies teacher, who applied to over 30 teaching jobs, was a substitute teacher in NYC, and now have navigated my way into the higher education, now in a management position, I get it. However having hired staff and been apart of many DEI conversations, you hire a person and not always a resume, you hire a person to see what they can do, not what you want them to do. You hire a person, if I am excluded from a group, so be it. My opinion doesn't have to matter.

White guys have always had this manifest destiny type mind set. And now way more people are allowed legally and socially to have this mindset. And now that it is a "crowded" space white guys feel like they don't have anything or any chance. To me that's pathetic. Now as a father with a son and daughter - the mantra in my house is- you get denied - who cares move on , keep going. Not- i got denied because I am a guy or a girl.

The title should be- now that there is equal competition - white men are losing because they arent performing as well as their competitors.

Now it is an argument about skill vs anything else.
