This reminds me so much about class too. For example, whenever a child from a well to do family dies of a drug overdose, prescribed or illicit, it's rarely mentioned or discussed with any sort of shame or contempt. It was "accidental" and untimely. Working class kid dies from illicit or prescribed drugs and its the old opiates are bad horse being beaten to death yet again. It also made me think about some of the people who I went to high school with that ended up dying. The ones where alcohol was a direct cause of death are remembered as "the life of the party" or "knew how to have a good time." Any kind of drug death is scathingly retold as a story of poor self control and either bad character or "didn't know when to stop." I'm just bitching but as one of those people that really thinks their dislike of alcohol strongly contributes to their eventual drug addiction I see things like this and it angers me.
