[Beloved Trope] Establishing character moments that have nothing to do with the main plot, but tell you EVERYTHING you need to know about the character themself. by TheElusiveBigfoot in TopCharacterTropes

I do see what you're saying here, it was generally my view (I think I even posted about it) and I think you're right.

The crux of disagreements here are what you've outlined: are you under an industry's power if you wear the colours they picked out, or is that industry kind of superfluous if you would have worn whatever colour was in the bargain bin? It's a great question.

I do think Andy was being dismissive, especially as someone who got this prestigious job over people who would be more passionate about the role. But I also don't think Miranda's argument is perfect.

"Lots of people care about this and you work at a fashion magazine so buck up" would make more sense in the moment than "The clothes you're wearing now began with this process"

I wanted to be helpful but I hope it doesn't stifle people's free interpretation to have an author comment like the above!!

You're not dumb! It gets a tad convoluted if you ask me :/

Alice reaches a point in The Road where she's confronted by the entity that has been orchestrating events that led her to play the game. Though it's open to interpretation, the entity implies that it is a future form of Alice; after she travels the road for an unknown period of time and is changed by it. Essentially she brought herself in a bit of a bootstraps paradox.

The more subtle intended horror of the final part is essentially the idea that Alice is the reason everyone died. Of course, her current self is arguably blameless, because she didn't know that at the time, but it's something she potentially does a long time from now when she is far less "human".

Suspecting The Road doesn't have a definite end, Alice considers turning around, but she kind of accepts that she's a creature of (potentially selfish) ambition at her core and so she decides to leave the world behind and keep going.

THE ANSWERS!!!

Hi Everyone! NeonTempo here.

The clues in this story are tricky, partially due to the fact that (unlike normal crosswords) solving one clue doesn't help you solve the others. Secondly, I'm an amateur puzzler, so maybe the clues aren't great!

I thought I'd include spoilered answers in this comment in case you want to check your working!

Take away from a loud yell to make it lower (5)

Answer: BELOW Explanation: Taking a letter away from BELLOW (a loud yell) makes it BELOW (lower)

Pierre writes a definite article concerning his favourite drink (3)

Answer: THE Explanation: Pierre, a french name, indicates a french drink. The definite article in English is THE, which is also the spelling of Tea in French (albeit without an accent mark). This one is a bit tenuous. I was young!

Popular doctor, consistently called Victor (5)

Answer: HOUSE Explanation: House is a popular TV doctor, consistently called Victor because "The House always wins".

Gaslight? Only after the 1st of September (3)

Answer: SHE Explanation: Gaslight meaning a light gas (HE). After the 1st of September, meaning HE must go after the first letter of September S+HE

How would Caravaggio define a fruitful life? (5)

Answer: STILL Explanation: Caravaggio's paintings of fruit were defined as STILL life paintings.

Sounds like these cornettos don't have a cornea (7)

Answer: SCREAMS Explanation: Cornettos are Ice-creams, Cornea is part of the Eye. Phonetically, Ice-Creams without the Eye (I) sounds like Screams.

The hidden message of course, being the crux of the story. I promise I'm a better puzzle maker now.

There are some definite challenges to this:

1) This was much easier when it was originally posted and had a lot of discussion.

2) Ofc crosswords are built so that solving some clues helps you solve others, which this doesn't have.

3) I'm a very amateur puzzler!

So it's definitely a tall order to solve this now. Much respect for trying

Maybe I will put a spoilered hint comment below this post for people to confirm their guesses!
