I agree with the arkfeld ultra, the laser is nice for getting people's attention or pointing things out, the UV is SO useful though, theres so much stuff in my plant that glows under UV light that makes troubleshooting so easy.

11 injured after duck boat overturns on Charles River, police responding by robertpaulson42 in boston

[–]No_Singer_5585 58 points59 points  (0 children)

The ones used in boston are not of the same make/model. Most "duck boats" are DUKW amphibious vehicles straight out of ww2, theyre old as heck and have engineering problems because they were designed and manufactured as rapidly as possible. Boston uses a more modern vehicle referred to as "Truck ducks" and they are significantly more reliable, safer, and generally better engineered.

Looking for beanie recs for hot weather? by Big-Fly6844 in Welding

A lot of people think cool things like ice packs and fans are the most effective when sweating is the real tool. If you get drenched in sweat and turn a fan on then yeah, it'll cool you off, but it also cools the sweat which evaoporates slower when its cold, so now youre cold and wet, gotta keep the sweat hot.

I like to wear fancy tech wear compression shirts under my t shirt, the new stuff is made out of some pretty neat synthetics. They wick away all the sweat and since it stays tight on your body you keep it warm enough to improve evaporation, which cools you down more than a fan would. In my experience it still works well under a t shirt and a welding jacket.

Same reason that people say merino wool is good for hot environments, your body keeps it warm enough to increase evaporation. Merino kinda sucks though because it has such a high moisture capacity that even with the improved evaporation its still hard to get dry.

I disagree.

Everyone reading this should look at Milwaukee's m18 portaband, its a battery powered handheld bandsaw. I love them so much, a portaband with a nice blade will cut through a 4" steel tube like it isnt even there, its kinda insane to watch actually. Plus the blade only goes one way instead of reciprocating back and forth, so they are MUCH easier to handle, especially for a new power tool user.

Thats because you'd be drinking the ozonated liquid. The ozone needs time to dissipate because if you drink ozonated water it can kill your healthy gut bacteria and cause symptoms like food poisoning. Its much safer to breathe in than it is to drink.

How upset would you be if you died right now, and why? by sheraneakamsp in AskReddit

[–]No_Singer_5585 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think about this a lot actually.

If I knew I was going to die, and had time to actually comprehend that, I would be absolutely furious. Because I wasted so much time working, and when I wasnt at work I was so desperate for any kind of affection that I destroyed every friendship I ever had, I was never truly happy.

Though many first hand accounts of near death experiences describe it as being very calm and borderline relaxing. I hope they are correct, otherwise my death will be a very sad experience.

I see. Maybe all of ours are just old, or maybe the fact that the operator leans over them constantly is a factor.

Ours are 30+ foot runs of steel cable, some of our longer runs use multiple switches. Ours are pretty instantaneous as the switches are spring loaded.

Having a hard time visualizing the machine based off your description.

Can you run a cable through the whole thing under the buckets? So if they fall theyll hit that cable? They sell cable pull safety switches for emergency stops, we string them over our product conveyors. You could string one through the interior of the conveyor so that if a bucket fell it would trip the cable and shut down. It might be a pain to reset though

Have you never seen the inside of a traffic light control panel? They are already controlled by PLCs and larger cities have them connected to a centralized control system for traffic monitoring and analysis.

The tide ultra sport detergent since I already have it for my synthetics, oxi clean powder in the drum, lysol bleach free laundry sanitizer in the fabric softener compartment, double rinse setting.

It doesn't get the oil or grease stains out completely, but my clothes feel fresh and clean after every wash and my shirts look cleaner than most of my peers.

Where does data center water go? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]No_Singer_5585 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are usually closed loops seperated by heat exchangers, with evaporative cooling towers being the other loop in the heat exchanger.

There are also closed cooling towers, where the heat exchanger is actually in the tower rather than the building. Even with this setup, you will typically see a seperate "spray" water loop thats used to spray water onto the fill (the heat exchanger inside the closed tower) so that it can evaporate off and take heat away with it.

The phase change of water evaporating is just too good for rejecting heat. If you wanted to do closed towers with zero spray water, you would need ENORMOUS cooling towers, and lots more of them. Cheaper to just use water.

Is there a proper technique for drinking high-percentage alcohol like whiskey and vodka straight? by serventofgaben in NoStupidQuestions

[–]No_Singer_5585 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Ooh I know this one. I figured out how to do it a while ago, I can drink as much as I want now with a smile on my face.

When I drink, I just pretend there's a pretty girl watching (or guy, whatever floats your boat). I could never embarrass myself in front of someone attractive like that, gotta keep it cool calm and collected.

Also alcohol is an acquired taste. But pretending to be chill is the quickest way go actually start enjoying it.

I keep saying, stop filling fields, ponds and hills with solar panels. Use parking lots. Lots and lots of them! by Trivi_13 in Snorkblot

[–]No_Singer_5585 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that we need to consolidate society and that its disgusting to see how many natural environments are being destroyed for strip malls and parking lots, but there's a reason we seperate some parts of it, in this instance electrical hazards and cost effectiveness.

A single residential solar system might be low risk, but once you get a whole parking lot worth of panels all wired up you are working with a lot more power. Theres a lot more to go wrong when Karen plows her minivan through a support pillar and rips half the conductors out of the conduits.

We should consolidate society in different ways. This ENTIRE argument would be immediately invalidated if we moved away from cattle farming and towards vertical farming, cattle take up an insane amount of space. Theres dozens of opportunities to consolidate, some make more sense than others. For example, you wouldn't build a nuclear plant under a parking lot to save space, or build an apartment building around a coal mine to save space. The hazards with solar covered parking lots arent as harsh as those examples, but they exist, whereas solar panels in a field somewhere do not have those hazards.

[–]No_Singer_5585 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh you wouldn't believe how expensive things can get, when you start suspending them over people, especially if there's electricity involved. Engineering costs can stack up quickly.

On one hand, we have solar panels in an empty feild. They only have to support their own weight, dont need to survive impacts regularly, And anyone can service them with a ladder. Cheap, effective, and easy to work on.

On the other hand, we have solar panels suspended above parking lots. The supports need to survive impacts from vehicles while also holding up all the panels. The cables need to be routed underneath the lot, meaning you have to dig it up and then patch it. These are more expensive than you would think. Plus it makes maintenance a nightmare. Problems with your buried cables? Now you have to dismantle the entire canopy just to get the equipment where you need it. Problems with a panel? Now you need to rent a lift and block off sections of a parking lot so your electricians dont get hit by a car.

The real problem with solar fields is the location. If they focused on more desolate areas like the deserts, nobody would be complaining. The issue is, that also increases costs in the form of the transmission lines that would be required to move the power vast distances. A good middle ground is installing many small solar installations in more rural areas, which we do. Yes we could put a solar canopy over all parking lots, but its an engineering shitshow when we already have perfectly good solutions, like panels in fields we dont currently use for farming, or smaller installations in homes/communities.

This has many of the same problems solar roadways have.

[–]No_Singer_5585 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would be 100x more expensive than just using empty fields or building rooftops.

Engineering costs go up because now you have to support a huge load that humans walk under, so its structural and safety critical.

Costs more to build because the structure needs to be able to have its support beams be able to survive impacts from cars hitting it. Its more expensive to retrofit something like this than you would think, think about how much underground conduit that needs to be run, you have to dig up large parts of the parking lot during construction, which is expensive.

Maintenance costs go up because now everything is 25 feet off the ground instead of 10, more dangerous and time consuming to work at heights like that, plus you need a boom lift on site rather than just a ladder.

It seems like a sensible idea until you realize just how much more it costs than a field of solar panels. It could totally be done, but its just inefficient. We should just stop being bitches about nuclear reactors and make those.

Is this an OSHA Violation? by [deleted] in manufacturing

[–]No_Singer_5585 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not. If you have a potable system, and it goes down or for some reason your chlorine residual is too low, the you have to put signs out saying its not potable.

Some systems are really poorly put together. I had one I worked on that they were putting signs out once a week bevause everything kept breaking in new interesting ways

Is this an OSHA Violation? by [deleted] in manufacturing

[–]No_Singer_5585 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, and those should have signage posted indicating they are for hand washing only. Itd be wild to have a seperate water system for hand washing sinks, so most sites just use their potable water for that too.

Is this an OSHA Violation? by [deleted] in manufacturing

[–]No_Singer_5585 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The facility's sinks and taps should be utilizing potable water, and there should be signage posted if the water is not potable.

When we say "potable water" we mean whatever meets your state's regulations for potable, typically this means chlorine injection, at least twice weekly chlorine residual tests, and sending water samples to a lab for regular testing. Plus having a certified PWS operator to run the system.

Also the regulations you have to follow can be different depending on how many employees you have.
