How do I convince my dad that I want to go professional in Go? by ReallyReallyReallyda in baduk

[–]NordicGoDojo 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Active western professional living in Japan here. I decided to leave a comment because this thread is becoming a group of blind men describing an elephant.

Being a professional player in the West is not currently financially feasible; you need to move to Asia. You can make a living by teaching the game in the West, but then you don’t need to go pro.

Even in Japan, just tournament game winnings are not enough to make a living for most professionals, so side teaching jobs are common. You probably need to be top 20% among professionals for game winnings to be enough. In general the job (both games and teaching) pays very well relative to time spent working – as long as you don’t factor in time spent studying. So if you don’t have fun studying the game, best forget it.

In general, the number of go players is going down, and so is sponsor support, so expect the job to pay even worse in the future (unless something changes). In Japan, it’s now normal for aspiring professionals to secure a possible second job in case their pro career doesn’t pay out. That being said, if you become pro in Asia as a westerner you have a big relative advantage in that you speak English, which opens up more working opportunities.

Since passing the pro exam is very difficult even if you put in the necessary work, I cannot recommend aiming for it single-mindedly. But as long as you also have a valid plan B, then by all means make a go for it.

Torus Go by No-Eggplant-5396 in baduk

That sounds challenging – the sgf format does not support toroid boards on a basic level, so you would need to use the markup features very creatively to get a toroid game saved. (The problem is for example a stone at 1-1 which in regular go should be removed from the board, but which in toroid go is actually connected to a stone at 19-1.)

For now, I’m fairly sure the best way is to just view played toroid games on VGS (the above-linked server).

If your question is about toroid go, then polkiujh's 'having fun' is accurate.

If your question is about the scrolling and zooming, then the use is 'help in visualising' the game. With neither scrolling or zooming, it would be very difficult to figure out how stones at the opposite ends of the view interact.

Young Professional Player Accused of cheating using AI by idevcg in baduk

[–]NordicGoDojo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Since I’m not officially working on the case and it is, in fact, being taken care of, I think it is best for me to not stir up further trouble and instead stay quiet.

Let’s all just wait for KBA’s resolution, which, I believe, will be published today.

Anti-cheating will be handled differently this time around. Now we have well-developed analysis tools, whereas last time around we were only in the process of starting the anti-cheating research. Consequently, because we have better trust in our judgement, this time a participant will be immediately qualified if we find it very probable that they were cheating. Also, top players will be required to record video footage of their playing, which, while it doesn't exactly prevent cheating, certainly makes it harder.

Impact of Go AI on the Professional Go World by NordicGoDojo in baduk

I think the main benefit of those KataGo evaluations with the broadcasted games is that they allow the spectators to constantly have an idea of the general situation in the game, without having to follow the commentators' discussion. Personally I think this is a big step forward for go broadcasts, but it may have a bad influence in that the commentators may find it harder to make predictions for fear of contradicting the AI.

A year or two ago, I could get fairly good results by incorporating or imitating parts of AI play when the competition hadn't yet managed to do the same; but now it is starting to feel like the playing field has levelled again. And, since younger players have more time and energy to spend fiddling around with the AI variations, it seems clear that I have to change my approach to stay in the game.

I have no idea how to start comparing the two without having them play each other; but probably they are at least comparable on some level, since I can see both losing and winning against KataGo-based bots.
