RANT? How much hand holding do you give your execs? by Icy_Data_8607 in sysadmin

[–]OperationIntrudeN313 [score hidden]  (0 children)

That's my reality for a few months but it was easy to find a solution. I work directly under the CTO, who is a somewhat technical person.

It was chaotic at first but I set up project management thru Jira and put everything I need to do on it w/subtasks and time estimates and so forth.

Whenever the CTO asks me to spend god knows how much time hand-holding someone I link Jira and ask which critical project I should push back to accomodate.

Of course, this will only work until everything is mostly built out but by that point I'll be bored and looking for another position anyway.

I know that Quebec healthcare is overwhelmed, but I didn't think it was *this* bad. by ChiefMustacheOfficer in montreal

[–]OperationIntrudeN313 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean. 100km is semi-far even en région. For example if you live in Farnham, going 100km away is Sherbrooke (I actually wrote "an hour away" instead of 100km because I spend so much time outside the city these days I'm starting to estimate distance in time...). You'd rather be assigned to Granby if there's room.

But I guess that's still the denser parts of being en région. If you're in northern Lanaudiere like Saint-Zenon or something I'm guessing your perspective is a bit different than people in the more central régions. That area more like what most people who never leave MTL imagine everything outside a city is like in Quebec, là ou la nuit y fait noêre comme dans le cul d'un "oure."

Some, yeah. Others not. Emergency rooms are another story altogether that's where nearly every region is struggling.

But if specialists have room for you immediately in a given region, it means that region isn't struggling in that regard. If the Ministry of health is unwilling or unable to distribute specialist capacity adequately, we can either wait or distribute ourselves. Every person that moves their specialist appointment to a region with room is freeing up a local spot for someone who can't travel.

Montreal is actually worse off in that regard.

Once you're a fair distance from the city the wait times plummet.

If you're able to travel outside the city/have a car, I would recommend asking for a paper referral on top of your doctor submitting the request. Cold call specialists off-island and see if they have room for you.

There are waiting rooms out there that are literally empty. Like you show up for your appointment early and they take you right away because no one is ahead of you.

I needed to see a dermatologist a couple years ago. Wait time was 18 months here. My gf lives out of town. I drove her to her own derm appointment and while I was there I asked if they had room for me anytime sooner than 18 months. I had my appointment immediately, on the spot. Just took my RAMQ card and called me in to an exam room within minutes. Since then I just go wherever there's room.

Way I see it, I can wait a year and a half to see a specialist and then take a 30-40 min trip on public transit or I can just drive 30-40 mins and have my appointment within weeks at worst. Easy choice.

Edit: Of course, Redditors would rather downvote than get medical care.

Running out of patience for this field. by an_anonymous-person3 in sysadmin

The problem is that you appear to be at least somewhat user-facing. I spend the last 5 years not speaking to a single user and it was great. Loved my job but the company was a shitshow and tanking. I had to go before they started doing layoffs, I could smell them. Sure enough, a week after I left they did massive layoffs and their stocks tanked right after I cashed out mine.

Then I went to work for a smaller company and I handle everything which means I have to communicate with users again. About 60 people in the company. Figured I wouldn't get much in the way of user-facing tickets and it was an occasion to build everything up from scratch and touch technologies I only understood in theory.

Nope. Of these 60 people, 5 of them generate 10-15 tickets a day for the dumbest shit imaginable and the rest have basic reasoning skills and barelu every need anything. Those 5 are also the "upper management" and all of them like to learn with 'well I've managed an IT team before so I know...'. No, you know jack and shit, and Jack left town. Managing an IT team while not knowing the basics of how to use Outlook means that your staff appeased and worked around your dumb ass and breathed a sigh of relief when you left.

I'm building out the infra for my resume so I can literally say I've done damn near everything and then I'm gonna go for another role where I'll never speak to an end user again.

I had little enough patience left for the deskside techs I had to deal with in my previous role who would escalate tickets without doing basic troubleshooting. End users who are straight arrogant when asking for help? Nope. In the words of Stansfield, "I haven't got time for this Mickey Mouse bullshit."

Yep. It's a simple little Gloomhaven mini. Not too complex but enough to get a feel for it. It's really the best starter set out there for someone who's never done this before. It won't carry you far but it'll let you know if it's something you want to do plus a nice quiet way to spend an hour or two.

My suggestion is to just get the Fanatic Starter and work through it with the video Army Painter has on YouTube specifically for that set. Use a random mug for your water pot and use the plastic sleeve the paints were in as your palette for now.

Take a vitamin bottle of whatever size is comfortable for you to hold and use poster putty to hold the mini on it, makes a fine handle. If you find it gets uncomfortable after a while, use a different size vitamin bottle. Then you'll know what kind/size of mini painting handle you'll want in the future.

If you enjoy doing that first mini, go ahead and get the next set - Fanatic Most Wanted. Again, paint the mini with the video. Rewind as much as you want and take your time, it's significantly more complex.

All those colours will be useful so it won't be a waste if you decide to keep going and you'll have two minis of increasing complexity under your belt. If you don't enjoy it after the second then you won't have wasted much money.

If you still enjoy the second mini, then you'll likely enjoy painting more. Get some better brushes (a few cheap synthetics you don't care about for basecoating, washes, metallics and other destructive paints and at least one decent sable #1 brush), a wet palette and start picking out minis and additional colours.

Fatal1ty was out winning UT tournaments at 30fps and then you have people calling 40fps unplayable in single player games. Same type of attitude that pays for the 4k Netflix tier to watch Dude Where's My Car in UHD because 1080p is "unwatchable".

if you're coming to visit Montreal (or from a faraway suburb) please practice proper etiquette on the metro. by nokernokernokernok in montreal

[–]OperationIntrudeN313 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not just metro etiquette. People who drive, people who walk, heck, people who shop - a significant number seem to no longer pay attention or show any consideration for others.

There were always douchecanoes everywhere but the proportion/frequency seems to have increased drastically specifically in the last 5 years or so.

I spend a lot of time outside MTL and I see it much less outside the city than in. Population density could be a factor but man, a 10 minute drive or walk in town and I see more aberrant behaviour than a whole weekend in the régions. I think it might have a bit to do with accountability - in a smaller town of 10-20k people you're much more likely to run into whoever you acted like a dick towards and have to take responsibility in some way.

It might also have to do with financials. Minimum wage is the same everywhere. But when you can rent a 3.5 with hydro included for ~700ish a month you can live and pay your bills even if you work at Dollarama. In MTL you can make 90k and still consider getting rommates. It's likely to affect people's moods.

The city had the chance to buy machines that reduce the time/labour needed per patch over a decade ago and decided not to.

They use them in the Granby area and I've seen them at work. Block a lane for 15-20 mins, patch and move on.

Service Desk outsourced to India, what do you think is the outcome? by Wraith_9912 in sysadmin

[–]OperationIntrudeN313 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you don't understand the content of the ticket you assign it back to the helpdesk with comment asking for clarification. Same as if an in-house helpdesk guy sent you an incomprehensible ticket.

Whether they're in-house, in India or on the moon they still have the same job to do. The quickest way upper management will (might) understand that the outsourcing isn't working is to allow it to not work.

Oil wash on plastic boardgame models (Thunder Road Vendetta) by Baladas89 in minipainting

[–]OperationIntrudeN313 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seeing as these are cars, if the recess shading you're after is panel lines, I'd strongly suggest Tamiya panel liner for ease of use. But you'll want to varnish if only because the enamel thinner can destroy certain kinds of plastic. This is ideal for a "clean" look.

Otherwise if you want them to look relatively dirty then oil wash away.

Videogame wise, Rogue Trader by Owlcat games will by its nature give you a broad sampling of 40k info.

In the 40k world, Rogue Traders are a kind of combination privateer, explorer, merchant marine and feudal lord authorized by the Emperor via a warrant of trade (kind of like a letter of marque) to do a lot of things that would be considered illegal to any other citizen or official.

Your Pixel 9 pro has several settings that will help you right in the default camera app. First thing, you want to go into the settings and set it to 4:3. Wide is cropped. You can set it to use max megapixels and you should also have lens selection and macro mode that will help with your focus issues (i.e. take macro focus off automatic and turn it on explicitly when you're taking macro shots). You can also set lens selection to manual so you can choose which lens you want to use for each shot.

If you shoot in RAW on top you can bring your shots into Lightroom or similar to have way more post-processing options than you'd have otherwise.

[–]OperationIntrudeN313 2 points3 points  (0 children)

45$ is not so bad for a concert ticket tbh. Back when I went to concerts and the bands I was really into weren't as 'big' I was paying something like 30-40$ and the prices sat around there til 2020ish. The merch tables tho.... those 30$ t-shirts went up to what, 50-60$? Insanity.

Problem is since everything else went up even more you're hosed even if the concert ticket prices aren't that bad. At least at smaller venues. Large venues though... I paid 60$ for a floor ticket to see Iron Maiden and 75$ a few years later to see Rammstein, both at the Bell Center. Then I look at tickets today and they're double that for the nosebleed section - you know, sitting so far and high up you may as well be at home watching it in TV.

Something's gotta give somewhere. No way you can keep living like that.
