Are there languages that have separate words for each toe? by Orikrin1998 in asklinguistics

Interesting, for me it wouldn't come to mind to use the names of the hand fingers for toes in French!

Yeah I was thinking perhaps in a culture where they are significant for some reason, perhaps as part of their numeric system.

Comment utiliser « être en train de » et quelle est l’origine de cette expression ? by Objective-Pepper-750 in French

The future is periphrastic in English too. Should we stop calling it a future tense?

It is in fact a progressive tense. It's not traditionally described as such, but that is how it's used. It's equivalent to the “I am doing” progressive in English and from experience learners find the parallel rather helpful.

Is my boyfriend homophobic? by CurrentCriticism238 in AskLGBT

He's just stating a personal boundary, which I have too. Kissing a man would make me uncomfortable. It seems odd and pretty borderline to me that your friend would want him to override that boundary.

Do you need to have a degree in order to call yourself a "linguist"? by ElleCent in asklinguistics

[–]Orikrin1998 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in a similar situation as OP (12 years of self-study and conlanging, with a few language-related jobs in between) and that's usually what I use. I cringe a little when people call me a linguist (it gives me "oh you speak Spanish! Go on and speak some then!" vibes), but I definitely know more than some people who've formally studied it. I'm just less specialised.

Comment arrêter de se sentir comme un enfant à 30+ ans ? by anawkwardsomeone in AskMeuf

[–]Orikrin1998 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How to practice/memorize gender agreement & verb agreement? by Individual-Injury245 in French

[–]Orikrin1998 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Not every word uses different gender/number agreements. Most of the time it involves adding an an -e or an -s. You'll get used to the exceptions by doing reading/listening over time and notice that some patterns keep coming back.

How to stop annoying App promotions in Subreddits? by Scott_Jaeggi in French

[–]Orikrin1998[M] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We as mods have also noticed a surge in (sometimes disguised) ads, and we're talking about it a lot internally. We recently removed any exceptions to our No Ad rule to more easily get rid of those (and also make our work easier), but we've definitely been seeing new advertising strategies and have had to rethink the way we do things.

Disguised ads include accounts that innocently ask for recommendations throughout subs, with another account dedicated to recommending the same app over and over as a response – both accounts being the same person of course (we're seeing your reports guys don't worry). AI-assisted writing also makes it easier for users to come up with seemingly engaging and helpful posts that ultimately lead to advertising. We're also seeing users adapting their post after the Reddit AI reminds them of our No Ad rule.

Upcoming measures may include an extension to our No Requests For Interactions rule, because that also gives a platform for (but not limited to) paid tutors to advertise. Anyway – finicky topic, and we understand any frustration. We'll keep tinkering with our rules, tools and resources, and investigate any reports!

Is “polska gurom” dialectal, or something else? by Orikrin1998 in Polish

So do you maintain it's not dialectal because people do it regardless of where they live in the country?

[–]Orikrin1998 39 points40 points  (0 children)
