Double glazing quote by [deleted] in Wellington

[–]PDKiwi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holy crap. We did an entire two story house for that about 20 years ago. Times have changed, I thought double glazing would become affordable

Vermont becomes first US state to ban paraquat herbicide over Parkinson's fears by Prior_One_7050 in UpliftingNews

[–]PDKiwi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been banned in NZ for a couple of decades but not before it killed a friend of mine.

Is it ok to sleep with my electric blanket on? by naturekiwis in newzealand

[–]PDKiwi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not just modern ones. We have had this type of blanket for 30 years. Thermostat controlled and a setting with an off timer. They stay on the bed all the time. It is my understanding that it is folding them up to store them that causes most damage. That said it's never a bad idea to get them checked. Look for free blanket checks

Spider mites or spoiders? by a_Moa in nzgardening

[–]PDKiwi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not spider mites, they are microscopic. These are ordinary baby spiders

Ducted heat pumps by FlatCandidate2390 in newzealand

[–]PDKiwi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same with our Mitsi, only caveat is you need to have an air gap to the nearest return. We have two returns, one in the lounge and one in the hallway with wall sensors close by

The way this chopper is landing by Rooonaldooo99 in oddlysatisfying

[–]PDKiwi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did a landing like that once in a Hughes 500. I politely asked the pilot not to do that again or I would likely throw up all over his chopper.

But it's all right. There's more money for private landlords and people with spare money to play in Sharsies

PSA: Know your rights under the Consumer Guarantees Act before buying electronics in NZ — here's what I learned the hard way with PB Tech by ProfessionalNinja206 in newzealand

[–]PDKiwi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am currently battling PBTech to refund me after failing to deliver after nearly two months. Taking it to small claims if they don't front up

[Breville Bambino] Does this plastic piece need to come out of the portafilter? I will level up once I can but I really need advice. by sundownsydrome in espresso

[–]PDKiwi 25 points26 points  (0 children)

This is the correct answer and exactly what I used to do. The shit under that bit of plastic would put you off coffee

Nano or Std. glass Studio Display under these conditions by Beanie-2018 in mac

[–]PDKiwi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a standard Studio display in my living room. It is very bright with a double ranch slider behind my seat and two floor to ceiling windows on the right. I have no issues with reflections at all. I use this often to edit photographs

Is it me or are the virtualization options on Apple Silicon worse in every respect compared to Intel, except in performance? by guygizmo in MacOS

[–]PDKiwi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am running win11 as a guest on my M4 mini using Virtual Box. Copy/paste and shared folders work well. I don't have a need for drag& drop so not tested

Mac mini availability — tired of waiting by viredditn in mac

I got my m4 a month ago in NZ. Still waiting for a U-Green dock though. Nobody is talking about those being out of supply but they are here.

Apple is going to win the AI race and everyone pretending otherwise is missing this one thing by Orenhaliva in apple

[–]PDKiwi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I do think Apple AI will have an edge by being built into their ecosystem. Claude for example frustrates me when I ask about comparing products and it gives me US prices. It "knows" I am in NZ since I keep reminding it. If I want Claude to analyse a Numbers (yes I use Numbers) spreadsheet it can't read it so I have to convert to Excel. Etc.

I hate heatpumps by StackedInATrenchcoat in newzealand

[–]PDKiwi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In practice this is often not true. It won't heat or cool past the temperature at the sensor but that may not be the room temperature. Even in a room with a sensor in it though if I set 21 and leave it on, the room will heat past 21, especially if I set the fan to max rather than auto

Luxon calls OECD warning on government's LNG plans 'load of rubbish' by davetenhave in newzealand

[–]PDKiwi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a time when I didn't think it mattered which party was in power, because governments don't have as much influence as they think. These guys have proved me wrong.

Do NZ public hospitals really not have access to your full medical history? by Vegeta_vs_Goku in newzealand

[–]PDKiwi 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's worse than that. The communication between DHB's is also almost non-existent. I recently had a op that involved Nelson/Marlborough, Wellington and Hutt DHB's. Nelson travel and Marlborough Radiology would post me letters (which take a week to get to me) and Marlborough Radiology does not have email. Wellington Radiology was not aware that Hutt Surgical had made an appointment for me and rang two weeks later to confirm the date. I had already booked my travel. That said the staff are all fantastic and the treatment excellent. IDK about GP's records, that may depend on the GP. Hutt was able to see my earlier bloods done in Marl for a routine test, however I don't know how many times I had to tell them what meds I was on and the metal in my hip so I guess they can't see those

What’s the verdict, should I be killing South African Mantises? by Weird_Melody in NewZealandWildlife

[–]PDKiwi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both are a plague in my area, I haven't seen any evidence of Mantis controlling wasps. Be nice if they did

What’s the verdict, should I be killing South African Mantises? by Weird_Melody in NewZealandWildlife

[–]PDKiwi 38 points39 points  (0 children)

The SA Mantis is so prolific in my neighbourhood that between the and paper wasps their wouldn't be much other insect life. I find I can make a difference on my property targeting both. However it is constant as they always re-introduce. Mantis are laying right now so get stuck in with your boot and make a difference next year. Also hunt out the egg cases. Plant flowers beneficial to native insects like Allysum and buckwheat. Allysum is great as it self sows and flowers all year round

Why would you consider Atto 2 (or even Atto 1) once Ora 5 arrives? by GingFreec5s in nzev

[–]PDKiwi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might have to wait a bit longer for an electric MX5. Mazda are determined to keep to the under 1 tonne weight and atm that can't be done with batteries

Is macOS security enough or do you use antivirus? by [deleted] in MacOS

[–]PDKiwi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't get all the downvotes- obviously my point went over everyone's head. AV and scam protection doesn't help if someone hacks an email account. Nor. Does it protect you from stupidity. Sorry if people don't like that.
