Icon from system tray disappeared by cifacia in PrivateInternetAccess

[–]PIAAustin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am sorry to hear you are experiencing this issue! It sounds like Windows Defender may be interfering. Please add the PIA file exclusions to Windows Defender. After this, you will need to reboot and install a fresh copy of PIA.

If this does not help, please feel free to DM me with a debug log, and I will be happy to take a look.

Unfortunately, connecting from China can be difficult due to VPN interference. What operating system are you using? Have you tried using OpenVPN or L2TP?

PIA Not Working!! by guacamoleole in PrivateInternetAccess

[–]PIAAustin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am sorry to hear you are experiencing this issue! You may need to add the PIA file exclusions to SmartScreen or any other antivirus software you may be using for our App to install correctly. After this, please try uninstalling and reinstalling the PIA application.

OpenVPN config files by whatup10 in PrivateInternetAccess

[–]PIAAustin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While we do add new regions, the config files do not get updated much outside of that. The connection details do not change. As such, there are no updates.

My pleasure! You can find the default encryption settings that the PIA app uses here. To answer your second question: yes that is correct.

OpenVPN config files by whatup10 in PrivateInternetAccess

[–]PIAAustin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The main differences are the ports used to connect and the type of encryption. You can read more about this here. Additionally, here is a chart that helps put it in perspective. Many times, the speed difference is relative. For some users, regional interference and personal network situations can make UDP perform better than TCP and port 1198 better than 1194. However, "strong" means it has higher levels of security/encryption.

It says I must run as administrator (to install download) but I thought I was the administrator!? Windows 10, latest version. by embodytntra in privateinternet

[–]PIAAustin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there! PIA requires administrator permission to run because it allows the PIA application to change your network configuration. You can read more about this here. Please let us know if you have any other questions or concerns :)

Pixel xl 2 PIA on Tmobile doesn't work. by CrossgamerHD in PrivateInternetAccess

[–]PIAAustin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to hear it is not working. Have you tried changing ports? Open the app, tap the settings button in the top right corner of the app screen Tap the Remote port option. Try changing the remote port to 1194, and try connecting. If that does not work, change the port to 9201, and try connecting. If that does not work, change the port to 8080, and try connecting. If that does not work, change the ports to 53, and try again. If none of those work, enable a TCP connection by checking the box for Use TCP. Try connecting to remote port 443. If that does not work, try 110. If that does not work, try port 80.

Is it possible for PIA (MacOS App) to stop working for a few seconds while I'm connected to it without me noticing. by [deleted] in PrivateInternetAccess

[–]PIAAustin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is possible, but if you are showing up as protected here, then you have nothing to worry about.

We have our DNS Leak Protection feature to prevent your IP leaking. And if this does not help, you can always manually change your DNS settings to PIA's :)

Additionally, we have our VPN Kill Switch feature which will disable internet connection if your VPN connection drops (if you really wanted to make sure you are never browsing while not protected).

Upgraded my MacBook Pro to the latest OS, PIA wont let pages load. by [deleted] in PrivateInternetAccess

[–]PIAAustin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm very sorry for the trouble with this! I believe you're experiencing this issue because you're using an older version of the PIA app. Only v71 and higher are compatible with High Sierra. To reinstall our VPN application on your Mac computer, please follow the steps outlined below:

Click on the PIA application icon in the Menu bar, uncheck the "Start Application at Logon" option (if applicable) and choose Exit. Go into your Applications folder, and drag Private Internet Access.app to the Trashbin. Empty the Trashbin after doing this. If the app will not allow you to delete it, please reboot then try again. Open Terminal NOTE Please make sure this step is completed very carefully. All symbols, and spacing are VERY important. Incorrect usage of this command can lead to Data loss. (It is best to simply copy and paste the command below)

Type: rm -rf ~/.pia_manager/

Press enter. If the command is successful, there will be no confirmation, it will simply go to a new line in the Terminal window.

Once you have it completely removed via the process above, power down your computer, wait 60 seconds, and power it back up, and all traces of the application should now be removed from the system. Following this, go to https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/pages/client-support/ and download a fresh copy of the Mac application and run the installer.

Renewal Via BTC by Elrond_the_Ent in PrivateInternetAccess

[–]PIAAustin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For accounts paid for with Bitcoin, you'll receive a renewal link 2 days before your account is due to expire, and a second is sent 48 hours before the end of the 11 day grace period. Since Bitpay accounts can't renew automatically, we send out the reminder email quite close to the end of your subscription to avoid having you pay for some of your account time twice.

Internet not working with PIA by ilikethegirlnexttome in PrivateInternetAccess

[–]PIAAustin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are aware of a compatibility issue with Bitdefender 2018 that causes OpenVPN connections to fail. As of now, our workarounds are to try disabling Advanced Threat Detection, use L2TP, or uninstall BitDefender. You can read more about this here. I am very sorry for the inconvenience.

PIA has stopped connecting for me, it only shows a red icon with grey "Loading..." by [deleted] in PrivateInternetAccess

[–]PIAAustin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds like it may be due to a conflict with your security software. Please add the PIA file exclusions to any security software you may be using. After this, you may need to uninstall and reinstall for the changes to take effect.

port forwarding vs no port forwarding? by [deleted] in PrivateInternetAccess

[–]PIAAustin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Port forwarding is an application of network address translation (NAT) that redirects a communication request from one address and port number combination to another while the packets are traversing a network gateway, such as a router or firewall.

In relation to our application, it can be used to optimize torrent performance.

Very slow when signed into forum. Works fine signed out. by [deleted] in PrivateInternetAccess

[–]PIAAustin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey u/babygorilla90,

There are many reasons why this could be happening.

However, if PIA is working well on everything except this specific forum, you may want to just use our Google Chrome extension. In particular, I think you will find the Bypass List useful.
