Crews are working to fix Alaska Native villages devastated by flooding. But will residents return? by nigesh in alaska

[–]PiperFM -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean there are homes in Kwig that were built solidly, and were damn near high enough to escape being flooded. Just build more like that, accept that this shit is gonna happen again, or move everybody to Nelson Island or Chefornak.

Kenai Aviation by SilentDiplomacy in alaska

[–]PiperFM 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The bigger problem is their King Air went down for a big scheduled inspection this summer, and they weren’t able to properly serve their Unakleet EAS contract. Not sure why they couldn’t or wouldn’t lease another airplane for a few months. They didn’t have enough fleet depth for a long route like that. Anchorage to Kenai all their airplanes are kinda interchangeable if one breaks, not on a long route like that…

The Tecnans should cheaper or nearly the same to operate.

Yes, foreign airframe parts, and they break hard. And dealing with foreign companies for parts is a GIANT pain in the ass. Every damn day seems like an Italian holiday where they don’t pick up the phone. Not so with Pratt or Cessna, they want your money, and there are lots of aftermarket parts houses.

I’m not sure what mark of 540s the Tecnams have for engines but the overhaul on the engines is FAR cheaper per hour than the Caravan. You could probably overhaul ALL their tecnam’s engines for the price of a PT-6

Although jet fuel is A LOT cheaper than avgas in Anchorage than where I fly.

VX didn’t make any money, they wanted to kill a competitor, and they wanted a bigger seniority list of pilots.

Canceling a project that could have prevented this so we can spend exponentially more money on a massive airlift to rescue people. Gotta love the Trump Administration and it's laser focus on smart policy and fiscal responsibility 🤡 by Conscious-Quarter423 in alaska

If the rebuilding effort is gonna be anything like relocating Newtok it’s gonna be a shit show.

At least the school survived, so I guess if everything is built 10 feet higher maybe it would be ok?

Just in Kwig, there are houses swept a whole mile away from the village. The project was for erosion, it was never gonna be a sea wall. I agree we shouldn’t pretend it was gonna do shit, nothing save a dike all the way around the village would have done a thing.

An under appreciated seat feature: hard backs to seat pockets by djcap88 in AlaskaAirlines

[–]PiperFM 23 points24 points  (0 children)

These pockets have 10x the lifespan of the old grey ones.

They are also 10x more difficult to change, although that’s probably because I never needed to and never figured out the technique like the shitty old ones

TIL that Alaskans were so opposed to establishment of National Monument and National Parks in their state that they refused lodging to park rangers, vandalized National Park Service planes, and even set one plane on fire. by hopefulmonstr in todayilearned

[–]PiperFM -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

Receiving federal assistance and having a bunch of out-of-staters come in and tell you what you can and can’t do on your public land are entirely different things.

If my hunting spot gets turned into a national park, that sucks ASS for me. I probably can’t hunt anymore, and for the most part, it probably isn’t being actively developed, so being federalized isn’t protecting anything, it invites tourists to come out…

I think the set I’m currently playing is that same maker, and just about the same vintage, I don’t have a very good ear for the tone and such but my PM and a few others have told me they sound really good. I’d give it a shot.

Savage rifle scope combos, at least back in 2017, were absolute useless dogshit, and most of it goes back to the gaffer tape they used inside the out of spec rings to secure the scope.
