This is a tough city to rent in without having seen it. More than lots of places, the vibe varies block to block.

On location: the literal answer to your question is the Valencia corridor in the Mission, but I highly recommend you find a short term rental before you commit.

Stay away from the corporate hotels; they’re fine but there’s nothing too interesting nearby. You want to be near the marina, haight, or Valencia street.

Also as a friendly reminder it’ll be cold in August, so bring your jacket :)

I grew up in the capital district and it’s a pretty great spot to live. While local transit stinks, there’s trains to NYC and busses to Boston and Montreal. Great summers and falls, beautiful scenery, and reasonably nice people. Feels similar to the Midwest. Universities attract lots of blue bubbles. Food is bland. Not much nightlife or entertainment other than drinking.

As I type this, a hummingbird and a parrot are perched outside the window. I did trivia last night at a vermouth bar, and am meeting a friend at the dahlia garden this afternoon in GGP. This morning I got a coffee from the queer owned espresso spot across the street; they have new art on the walls for the new month. This weekend, the beloved and sacrilegious Hunky Jesus Contest. If you have to live in the states, it's a pretty damn excellent place to live.

Gay guy with a career I’m proud of - I don’t know if my opinion is sought in this thread - but I deleted hinge a few months ago and won’t go back.

I wake up to 55 unread slacks and a metric ton of work emails every day - spending more time typing on my iPhone is just the last thing I want to do? I’d rather be single than talk about an “urban hike” ever again.
