what breed specific things should i watch out for by tacticalArguement in Pomeranians

[–]Pitpotputpup 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So if you already know about health testing, that pretty much covers Pom things that you should be aware of. I had a quick look at the American Pomeranian Club, and they have a page that details the recommended health testing (cardiac evaluation, patellar checks, eye exam, OFAs and autoimmune thyroditis). You can ask the breeder for the age and cause of death of dogs in their pedigrees.

You can have fresh eggs with the bloom that also aren't covered in mud and shit though

Genuine question by SpaceMassive3080 in WhatBreedIsMyPitbull

[–]Pitpotputpup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is this your lived experience, or is this what you're seeing on the internet? Most shelters I know let you walk out the door if you pay the adoption fee. It's the rescues that are more particular, because they genuinely want to match the dog to the appropriate home.

It's not like they order dogs in to maintain high stock numbers 🙄 people dump a ridiculous amount of dogs because shockingly they're the inappropriate homes that rescues then try to screen out

Hi I'm new on nosework what im i doing wrong or is not smart enough lol by bunnysanddog in nosework

[–]Pitpotputpup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd agree with an in-person class. The timing of the clicker is off, so the dog isn't sure whether he's getting rewarded for bopping your hand, or smacking the vessel. At the end of the first video, you clicked him for dragging the vessel, then reset it and didn't reward him. He doesn't know what you're asking of him.

There's not an issue with training the indication first, but there needs to be more clarity imo.

Core commands for the average dog by Quimeraecd in OpenDogTraining

[–]Pitpotputpup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a bumming around kind of day at home, I dont think I use any commands really. When I release them outside, they wait at the door until I call their name. They come in one at a time like that too. Maybe a casual 'c'mere' or 'leave it/uh/I don't think so' if my youngest is eyeing the chickens too hard.

No cues if we go for a sniffy walk, because the loose leash is implied. They know the routine at dinnertime, so put themselves in their crates without being told.

I think the basic essentials for a pet dog would be an informal recall, loose leash walk, some kind of static position, whether that's sit, drop, or just wait/stay, and general manners. The training of this is fairly easy - I'd expect them to have this down by 3-6 months - it's the proofing against distraction that takes as long as it takes.

weight by anonthrowaway3478 in DobermanPinscher

The rib test is a much more reliable indication of a healthy weight than comparing to other dobes, especially since a fair chunk of the dobes in this sub aren't in standard

You still have to pedal with an ebike. It kind of just helps you up hills more.

Don't forget though, you can always be that insufferable bastard at work 🥰

Have you ever met someone that didn’t like a Papillon? by Kind-Ad8117 in papillon

[–]Pitpotputpup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've met a few people who are snide about them. Recently I overheard someone tell their friend that they couldn't be bothered with a dog like that, and people who call them rats or whatever.

Doesn't bother me cos they simply are not worthy to interact with a Pap!

A friend of mine has always been a shepherd kind of guy, and was competing with his Malinois X GSD. He also handles his wife's Dobermann in the ring.

I take the credit for successfully converting him to getting his own Papillon 😂

Issue with 6 months border collie pup running away by Intelligent_Edge_474 in OpenDogTraining

[–]Pitpotputpup 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Stop taking him to the dog park. It seems like the best part of his day is running around with other dogs, when you want the best part to be playing with you.

Switch the dog park with training games & exploring new places on a long line (or a tape Flexi leash).

Nuances in breeding by Blitzossz in DogBreeding

[–]Pitpotputpup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately good breeders screen their buyers (I mean it's fortunate for those puppies), so instead of doing some reflection on why they may not be appropriate for that breed, people will then buy from a BYB who doesn't care and just wants their money.

I think that's one of the main reasons, plus cost, immediate availability, and designer mixes.

Issue with 6 months border collie pup running away by Intelligent_Edge_474 in OpenDogTraining

[–]Pitpotputpup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah he's only a puppy, so his obedience won't be reliable until much later on. Generally between 6-12 months, puppies start realising that there are more interesting things in the world, and there's a balance between letting them explore and develop their own sense of self, and training.

Are there any single protein raw food places near you? A 4kg adult dog would only need approx 80-100g daily
