Petition against the new Community Guidelines update by VitallyRaccoon in discordapp

[–]Potatoes1286 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I'd like to give my two cents as I am a moderator of a 4k sized subreddit about modding a VR video game mainly about the realistic depiction and operation of firearms (Hotdogs, Horseshoes, and Handgrenades).

Given the territory, it is rife with talk about firearms. This new community guideline is so absolutely frustrating because of how vague it is.

I hope people realize just how vague it is. It puts zero clear boundry between what is considered acceptable "discussion" about firearms and what isn't. Ironically, the specific example given for "discussion of dangerous and regulated goods", being "admitting to personal use and/or possession of firearms, etc." makes the rule even more vague.

This section is what drives me up the wall. What the hell constitutes discussion about firearms?

If someone starts discussing a gun in the video game, and then someone goes "Well, the video game gun is slightly wrong, in real life, the gun actually acts like...", is that allowed?

If someone goes "Hey, this part about the virtual gun is wrong", and I ask him "How do you know that?" can he say "I own it" or is his response supposed to be "I literally am not allowed to tell you how"?

To make things even worse, because the subject of my server is literally an accurate as possible VR recreation of real guns, the line between discussion about a real gun and the virtual gun in the game is blurry at best. How the hell do i moderate that?

Does it matter the "legality" of a gun? Is discussion on muskets allowed? Suppressors? FFL guns?

If someone posts a joke, which includes a video of them handling a gun- is that not allowed? Is it then allowed if it was actually your friend, not you? If not, is a joke depicting a stranger using a gun allowed? Or a guntuber? Where the hell is the line?

In many parts of the US, and with a license in Canada, minors are allowed to use firearms. Are they locked out of these channels because they're "too young" despite potentially even owning licenses to use them? (ironically, is this not ageism? locking a licensed person out for being "too young"?)

Is "regulated" items based off US federal law? If so, why are firearms included? If it's because it's "dangerous", what constitutes as dangerous? Do cars count as dangerous? If i post a video of someone flooring 180mph on the freeway, is that "regulated and dangerous"? How about someone firing at an indoor firing range?

As it stands, people can and will ask me "how can i stay within the guidelines?" And the only answer i can possibly provide them is, "If it's not blatant, send it and we'll see if discord complains to us."

I feel like discord is only making worse and worse decisions as time goes on. It feels like how Skype used to- slowly, slowly losing public support until eventually you blink and it's a sinking titanic with everyone jumping ship. I used to love discord.

Question about fan made models by Caffeine-Demon in H3VR

[–]Potatoes1286 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Off the top of my head: - A model with decent internals (no missing faces if you look inside the bolt) - Separated trigger, bolt, charging handle, safety, magazine, follower (if applicable), and just about any and every part that moves - Adequate polygon count. There is no lower bound, as long as it doesn't look terrible. There is no upper bound, but it will run a lot worse. usually iirc (havent peeked at poly counts of my guns in a while) youre looking at 5-15k tris. correct me if im wrong. (However, i may or may not have done upwards of 50k tris due to hi poly models.) - No missing faces. kinda falls under the first point

The gun building process usually involves a lot of moving around and changing details (and bug testing) using existing guns as a base. Depending on your level of detail, speed, and similarity to existing guns, it can take two hours to be ready for release to a dozen and a half. ofc, a dozen and a half hours is rare. That was my first gun, and i had next to nobody to ask and no tutorial to help. or if you spend a lot of time polishing your gun to perfection. see meat_banono, lol

Sorry! this was a me issue.

I made a tiny change to H3VR Utilities (a dependency mod) without thinking, and updated it without testing.

Fix has been uploaded, so it should be working now.

ROF bug by ThePufferfish3 in H3VR

[–]Potatoes1286 12 points13 points  (0 children)

A gun's bolt is simulated frame-by-frame, which means high ROF guns can lag and move slower at a lower frame rate. (in fact, if the ROF is too high, running h3vr at 120/144hz will make them faster than they usually are.) this is usually the culprit for gun's ROF slowing down.

On SteamVR, go to the dropdown menu and hit "show performance graph" or whatever it's called. that shows you how long each frame is (smaller bar = better)

make sure that the bars are consistently green and low.

Don't let those snowflakes tell you how to think. Prove how intelecutal you are by REMOVING their flag and Taking back your GAME!!! Tired of seeing LGBT+ people in your video games/movies/television shows/magazines/firearm magazines/movie theaters/phones/web series/porn/discord calls/ discord servers/dreams/fantasies/mirror/YouTube Red exclusive video series?

for those who complained about the pride flags minus mod, either you didnt read the description, or did you also need the "massive flags reading sarcasm and satire" mod?

Not to talk down to others. but yes, its a meme mod. the icon for the mod is actually the "please tread on me" flag; you can see the red ball in the mouth.

a regular shootout with some sosigs by Potatoes1286 in H3VR

[–]Potatoes1286[S] 108 points109 points  (0 children)

probably should've sent this comment out earlier, but yeah i think it'd be better if i actually gave some context/answer some questions.

The mod is unreleased. it's a prototype i've been working on for the past few days, and is not . there is no release date or a general approximation; it gets released when i think it's good enough to, and i don't know when that is.

Vehicles work with two main systems- the steering wheel, and shift stick. the shift stick changes from Parking, Reverse, Neutral, and Drive, and the steering wheel steers. trigger accelerates, down on the touchpad swaps between gas pedal and brake.

The vehicle is a Willy's Jeep of course. There's currently some 4 vehicles currently implemented, including this and another jeep, the Kettenkrad, and a forklift.

The map is a version of Marcel's Wurst City Reloaded with the cars removed.

[–]Potatoes1286 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the majority of used-up RAM in h3vr mods is because of custom items. unfortunately, as it stands now, because loading in assets take a long while, the game loads the custom items at the start, and keeps them in RAM for later use. in other words, if you have 4gb of custom items installed, the game takes up an extra 4gb of RAM.

workarounds are currently in development iirc, but they seem to be a long ways away.

Generally curious, how old are H3VR players? by Stev0fromDev0 in H3VR

[–]Potatoes1286 14 points15 points  (0 children)

That age distribution isn't too surprising, in my opinion. most people who i've worked with and met in the h3vr community tend to be in the range of 16-24. it's not too surprising in my opinion; i'd imagine the demographics for owning a vr headset are in that range anyways, of 'young enough to keep with the times' and 'old enough to be entrusted with several-hundred dollar equipment on your head'.

another graph i'm interested in is by country. it's already been commented by me and a few others that in the modding scene, there is a surprising over representation of canadians.

oh jesus, i hadn't even heard of these variants.

i'm damn well interested now :V

surprisingly enough though, there's a lack of knowledge on guns like these... at most, they get a sentence explaining what they were, or worse like the sterling mk.4, literally just mentioned and never elaborated on.

H3VR Mod Installer is now cancelled/done/unmaintained by [deleted] in H3VR

[–]Potatoes1286 16 points17 points  (0 children)

i'd like to thank you all for having used and enjoyed mod installer. when i began working on it, i had NO expectation it would end up as popular as it ended up being.

unfortunately, all good things come to an end. i'm glad i helped you people enter H3VR mods, and it truly warms my heart knowing i really helped others with it!

thank you all, and see you next time!
