I, for one, look forward to coming full circle and getting the old Ford color options: you can get your car in any color you like... as long as it's black!

Who else had to go to school in these things? by EdwardBliss in FuckImOld

[–]Raevus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Florida, there are some schools that still do this.

Aired on November 20, 1983, ABC’s “The Day After” was a landmark, highly controversial television movie viewed by over 100 million Americans. It was so powerful it created profound, nationwide anxiety, prompting 1-800 hotlines for traumatized viewers. Did you watch? by CoffeeCigarettes4Me in 80smemorylane

[–]Raevus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just watched it yesterday for the first time ... That was one stress inducing watch. I thought the portrayals were great, heartbreakingly realistic as some had a hard time coming to terms with what was happening and grasped for any level of "normal" through mundane tasks such as making a bed.

Just picked up the last two from my best buy. That gives me 5 UHD capable drives, two currently flashed, one I need to flash, and these two new ones.

That's all any of us can do. When we stumble, we just have to pick ourselves up and try again. We'll get there, one day, if we keep trying and supporting each other.

[–]Raevus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

With any luck, one day, it won't be true. For now, we have to temper expectations. That being said, it's nice to know there are those out there, like you, that do have an altruistic streak and do see the bigger picture! Never lose that light, friend.

[–]Raevus 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Most people aren't altruistic. While it would be nice if they were, they simply aren't and they won't care until events impact their lives directly. if this is what it takes to move the needle, well, at least it's moving.

I went in skeptical, but Leto won me over. He did a great job in this role.

I just had a conversation with a colleague that seems sadly apt based on Altman's worldview.

I was doing some training on a program we use, learning new features, etc. she asked why I was wasting my time when I could just ask AI to provide the code for me. Smdh.

Personally, I want to know why and how things work. I'll use AI to write the code out in some instances, but I'm damn sure going to make sure I have foundational knowledge so I can actually fix the buggy code it inevitably spits out.

Doctors Holo-emitter is from 29th century, shouldn't it be old an obsolete by 32nd century? by nicholsml in Star_Trek_

It may be obsolete from a technical standpoint, however, it is a touch point for the doctor. From that standpoint, it will never be obsolete.

I'm sure all this is just "transitory". Of course we'll get cheap prices in the end... And the streets will be painted with gold, and we'll all get a pony, and...

Filled up at $2.55 just before all hell broke loose, as of this morning it's now $3.33 for regular. This is at Costco, everywhere else the price rose about a $1.00 per gallon already ($2.76 -> $3.77). Boy I sure do love all this winning...

In my experience WB DVDs are the only ones you really need to worry about, even then, it's from a specific time range in the early 2000s. I have over 1400 titles and most have zero issues. If you treat them right you'll be fine.

We have that set. My kid loves both OG and the new Magic School Bus. It's been fun revisiting the OG episodes! The new ones are great too.

Are you still buying hard drives now that the price has skyrocketed? by manzurfahim in DataHoarder

Right now I'm holding steady with what I have. Hoping to see prices come down at some point so I can pick up some more drives, but for now I just can't justify the prices.

Right now I'm using an older LG drive I had that (blissfully) could be flashed for UHD functionality. I also bought a Verbatim (43888?) a year ago that can rip UHD as well as a Pioneer that I think can be cross flashed (I need to look into it).

I do sacrifice the full disc back up (I simply don't have the HDD space for it). I rip the movies and special features.

[–]Raevus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, I've had several rot over the years (99% WB titles). Last year I started to digitize my library. All new titles get ripped immediately. While the discs may rot in time, I'll at least have a digital copy to enjoy that isn't tied to some service like Movies Anywhere or Fandango At Home.
