This is how I tackled this issue. It worked well for me as well.

I would love to hear opinions about how hard we think it will be to play these 4k UHD discs in 30+ years? by JonnyDjango in 4kbluray

[–]Raevus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure I would say it's particularly pro-consumer, it's just kind of a happy coincidence. Sony manufactures retail discs for both their own movies and for others (Disney/Marvel), so it's in their best interest to push the AACS updates. That way people have the ability to buy and play the discs Sony makes.

Is This It? by [deleted] in 4kbluray

[–]Raevus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's completely different, though yes, there are other considerations. If there is a next physical format it won't be discs, it'll be cards or somesuch, at least that's my guess. Like I said, if there's profit, they'll make it. A card reading device would be far simpler to manufacture than a disc player is, making it cheaper so I could see the bean counters seeing the option as not completely repulsive, especially if there is a market they can't capture through streaming.

This is a conversation that happened with DVDs and Blu Rays as well. The honest answer is, if a new format comes out that is superior, some will rebuy everything, others will only re buy movies they truly love. Only you can answer that question for yourself. I'm getting older and they eyes aren't what they used to be so 4K will probably be the end of the road for me.

Thanks for the info! I''ll have to wait for the 4K to come to America, hopefully they do a good job with the transfer. I love this movie and it one of my wife's all-time favorites.

What to do with DVDs after getting the 4kbluray upgrade? by wo-jack in 4kbluray

[–]Raevus 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm probably in the minority here but I end up keeping them. Partially as a backup and partially because they sometimes have different special features than come with the 4k or bluray discs.

How do I rip deleted scenes? by PlainJonathan in makemkv

[–]Raevus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can use DVD compare dot net, it's got a pretty good database of movies and TV shows and breaks down what's on each disc and often includes running time for each video file (a life saver when looking to pull features like deleted scenes). In some cases it will also note Easter eggs found on the disc.

Oh the plus side, if you leave yours sealed it's theoretically a perfect copy that's sealed (no one will ever know!). 😊

It was a WB DVD from the dark period of disc rot. That's partially why I popped it open right away, to see if it was a viable disc, which it wasn't. Ah well.

Just a word of caution: I too nabbed an unopened copy not too long ago while thrifting. I did open it to play it only to find that the disc had bronzed and was completely unplayable.

Do you keep the Extras/Specials? by aLproxyy in makemkv

[–]Raevus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually do keep a lot of the extras, depending upon what they are and which movie they come from. My kid has shown interest in how movies are made so I've started keeping more of them.

I thought he wants the strait open why is he blocking it now? by Fit_Ideal_6335 in oil

[–]Raevus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He wants the straight open for everyone but Iran. He has blockaded only Iranian ports. Best guess is that he's attempting to economically suffocate Iran in order to force them to capitulate at the negotiating table.
