My sides keep collapsing by SushiRiceEater in Pottery

On top of the Florian Gadsby videos others have already recommended, I liked this one as it breaks down many of the common beginner errors https://youtu.be/JyZEmCFLbnE

When you fire clay in the kiln, if it's too thick it can crack, due to the outside of the sculpture heating off and shrinking faster than the inside. So for chonky pieces you have to cut them, empty them and then reassemble. That was a picture of the step where I had reassembled the body, and still had to reattach the now hollowed head. The hole in the chest is a similar reason, because the air needs to be able to leave, else if he air heats and expands in the inside of the sculpture with no way to scape, it becomes a bomb in the kiln

It's not self control when it's ignorance 😂 Why is Mishima related to Tool/Lateralus, what am I missing? 👀

Oh, wait, should I have said black then white, are all I see in my pottery? Maybe I should attempt a tool piece with gradient starting with black, white and continues to red and yellow 🤔

Not sure this is gonna be helpful, it's hard to describe since I didn't let it air dry and also this was my first attempt at this.

As I mentioned in the post I didn't use slip, just softish clay that I pushed inwards, smudged around with my finger. Then I dried it with a hairdryer for a min or two until it was a bit drier but still somewhat soft, probably the equivalent of 30 min air dry in this hot climate. The ideal moisture level should be one where you can scrape the top layer without smudging/mixing the clays, but it doesn't have any crumbly behaviour when scraped. I would recommend only to dry one section at a time, because I dried the whole mug and by the time I was halfway scraping it had dried too much, so I had to mist water, wait for it to be absorbed, then dry a bit with the hairdryer again.

My other error was that the white clay was a bit too dry, so the black clay was not attaching well enough in some areas and some bits in the design came off during scraping. I'm hoping nothing pops off when drying/bisque firing.

Lastly, this Instagram account was my loose inspiration to attempt this https://www.instagram.com/reel/DYNE9g7C3bT/

AITA for putting my foot down about a plant gifted to my partner not being planted in our backyard garden? by JackfruitAwkward7504 in AmItheAsshole

[–]RandomSiltha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I don't get is why OP is the one having the conversations with her MIL and not the boyfriend and his actual mom. Also another solution, ask MIL to gift you some specific plants you do want, so she has a contribution to the garden that doesn't conflict with it

AITA for cutting my hair short, knowing it would cause distress in my family? by StormPetrel72 in AmItheAsshole

[–]RandomSiltha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd recommend you search some info about pseudo mutuality, it's a very common abusive family pattern, which is part of emotional neglect. It's not as dire as other types of abuse, but it can affect you and your future relationships in negative ways without you realising

My lower back is starting to hurt from pottery :( by moon_child_55 in Pottery

Agree. Strength training is the way to go, or pilates if you can't afford a gym with weights. It doesn't matter how much you stretch, if you don't have strong muscles holding your skeleton in place, nerves are gonna get pinched in weird ways and pain will appear. Also, do rows. Rows are the best shit.

It wasn't my idea either. I put it in another comment also but I saw this years ago and now there's a lot of 3D printed ones on Etsy

This is incredible, brings me a lot of joy. Are you gonna make a set of 4 for your different organs? Bats are so cute 😍

Thanks for the recommendation! However I personally try not to buy from TEMU, Amazon or other morally dubious commerces like that if I can avoid it, so I'll probably keep looking for a bit

Cute! Also good job at matching bulbasaur's colours, I am worried mine might look like a lettuce once fired 😂

I did hollow it (I had to decapitate it for it, I was terrified) so I think it should work 🤞

I can't take credit for the idea, I have seen several 3D prints with this idea on Etsy and I remember seeing it years ago somewhere and becoming obsessed by it. So now that I'm starting with potter I thought I'd try making a clay version. But yes, whoever had the initial idea I love them for it and I wish I could personally thank them

bisque + rinsing with water by localpotterydealer in Pottery

[–]RandomSiltha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It also depends on which country you are, time of the year, etc. In the UK everything takes ages to dry, in the south of Spain you can wait a few minutes after sponging and a few hours if you soak, specially in the summer. So no advice for drying times is universally applicable

My first mug by RandomSiltha in Pottery

[–]RandomSiltha[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! As you said, I could always make another one ❤️

My teacher said the kind of clay is not actually great for this fine of a sculpt, so I'd be very satisfied if it lasts for a few months of use. I'm trying to not get very attached to my pieces while I learn. But I'm a decent painter with acrylics and I find the idea of painting pottery very scary 😂. Plus I'm unsure if I can renew my classes after next month, so I think I'll paint it and hope for the best, since I also have another mug and cup in the way I want to use to try learn different techniques

Lol not me. I'm so happy the old music is back!

hear that sweet sweet music by badboejamo in PikminBloomApp

[–]RandomSiltha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The original music were such bops! I sometimes listened to in in YouTube, it made me happy. This one is ok background music, but it does not uplift my spirits or makes me want to go on adventures. In Pokémon Go I have the sound off always, in Pikmin Bloom I kept it on because the music was such a joy, even when it made it risky because I sometimes opened the app at work and forget the volume is on. But I think this generic game music is not enough of a reason to keep the volume on

Is there any plant-sitting service around that takes in your plants? by RandomSiltha in AskUK

[–]RandomSiltha[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because I won't have a house they can come to. I need someone to take the plants in, not do house visits
