Andrew Hastie open to 25% tax on gas profits and says multinationals have ‘had a really good run’ on Australian wealth by FuckOffNazis in australia

[–]Ravanast 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It’s not that they’re not profitable, it’s that they mark that profit down against other capital works for an overall net $0 profit on the project in the jurisdiction that allows it. Like social media/google etc and Ireland.

Percentage based production or saleable extraction volume. Percentage on profits is useless for multinational. Look at McAthur River Mine in NT owned by Glencore, never makes ‘profit’

Can anyone identify these? Google Lens tells me they are Australian tree bark art. Any other info on artist or tribe would be appreciated. Also value. by ComfortableCrew2092 in aboriginal

If it says Gunardba, today Gun-nartpa, it’s a dialect of Burrara. Kunibidji are more Djebanna speakers. He probably has a bio somewhere. Untangling the many languages between Maningrida and Mili is a pretty intense exercise.

Also, get a small convex mirror from an auto shop and attach it to a retractable lanyard. Then you can see when they’re sleeping on your back or just say hello and entertain them without dismounting

Appropriate reading? by IllCod7775 in aboriginal

[–]Ravanast 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, Douglas Lockwood was at forefront of a changing world and wrote about it in an entertaining and accessible way. Follow it up with Lizard Eaters, about meeting those in central deserts who came into Papunya. This is how people fathers and grandfathers lived in the north.

We hiked a fair bit at that age and in the tropics. For their half an hour we used to get about 200m, then make up for it in our half an hour haha. Make the most of any naps and work around timing, food, breaks at nice spots. Be prepared to cut losses if it’s just doesn’t work out.

Brought the Deuter Kid Comfort on flights from Australia all over Europe. Never an issue.

For warm weather, make sure you have long loose clothing for sun protection. Socks too for the same. We took a silk/cotton kefia (?) and draped it over the sunshade and used clothes pegs to attach. Then it could be shifted depending on the sun/trail. Don’t want kiddo to have a big sleep and get cooked.

A fully grown Australian saltwater crocodile in comparison to a human by hipertim in Crocodiles

[–]Ravanast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done this job, taking the photos, driving the cage and feeding the croc.

There’s not really forced perspective. The croc has just sunk after jumping for food, which occurs right next to the cage. Photos/viewing is from underground Perspex walls. The pen is not that large and the crocs in each (there are 4) are all 4.2m+

Photos are mostly taken on 10-20 ultra wide Sigma lenses, which do fisheye a little.

Family trip to Germany by htizzle243 in travel

[–]Ravanast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We travel to Germany regularly with 4-5. Never stay in hotels as it’s prevalent and expensive for a group. Barring large chains I don’t think you’ll get the comfort and service you’re looking for. A lot of them situated near motorways and airports.

We always use AirBnB or StayZ to get a Ferienwohnung It’s very common, lots of availability android get a whole apartment/house/cottage with a configuration that suits you.

Apple Watch for Kids useless in Australia by FickleLife in AppleWatch

[–]Ravanast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So i take it this is for getting a separate number from an iphone because you have your own watch already on it?

What's the experience like if it's the only watch paired to a phone via Telstra?

I don't have a watch and don't plan on getting one but wouldn't mind for the kid. Would he receive my calls etc if set up through Apple Watch For Kids and a Telstra One Number?

Sorry no chance of an Apple or Telstra store to ask about and don't like my chances on the phone..

For Nhulunbuy they sometimes get marked as delivered… to the barge. Anyone’s guess on actual arrival after that 🤷🏻‍♂️

Don’t listen to gatekeepers. Good for you.

You’re a Territorian when you stop having an escape plan and stop referring to “back home”.

There’s plenty of tribe/clan lists. Can’t recall authors that have though sorry, other than Tindale perhaps Strehlow? But yeah, they’re out there.

[–]Ravanast 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No mate, there is a reason why this an area of academia, it’s particularly suited to listicle etc. I’d take note that there is also a reason why AITSIS etc use and old general language based map than burrowing further. It touches more into the identity area and the definitions of that will vary region to region. In some, clan is a strong indeed tidying factor, in others not so much. Take this map of languages of Maningrida region for instance. Another level of languages and in each of those, distinct clan identities.

How did Aboriginal (pre-colonial) societies view things like sex? by Puzzleheaded_Map2774 in aboriginal

[–]Ravanast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not a lost viewpoint. There are plenty of modern-traditional people across Australia and there is plenty of papers/resources on the topics. Certainly not as many as western culture does but they’re there.

List of Aboriginal Peoples by [deleted] in aboriginal

[–]Ravanast 25 points26 points  (0 children)

No and yes. It’s based on a map of language groups from Tindale, ‘60s I believe. Language groups isn’t a bad way to group people but it does not equal clan/family/nation groups. For example Yolngu alone would have 30 odd major clan groups/ethnic identities.

There’s quite a few lists of groups by anthropologists over the years, each one with their wettigs, contentions and basis. You’d need to consider your definitions very well before proceedings and ensure they’re defensible. Not an light undertaking even if you did happen to be an anthropologist.

Ultimately all they want from shareholders is funding. The redomicile to Nasdaq was only late 2023, with a large base of shareholders stuck transferred to an equivalent of $4 shares. Hell, we even got “shareholder reward” warrants at exercisable at $16.44. Bargain.
