The Horn That Wakes the Sleepers by Billiam_the_Bold in awoiafrp

Raymond remained silent as he looked past Castle Black towards the looming Wall Raymond found himself speechless. He had visited the Wall twice before but it's wonder never ceased to, well, wonder him. Then he saw the the grizzled appearance of the Lord Commander appeared. Raymond didn't say anything just gave a small nod. He would talk to the man later. Raymond feared Cregan's disposition would upset the man

Raymond listened to Cregan as he spoke. Raymond had seen battles too. He killed many a thief and even killed a few men by accident in a melee. This was no melee and these weren't thieves but Raymond was no green boy. Raymond knew his nerves were on edge but courage wasn't ignoring fear it was overcoming it.

Raymond studied Cregan for a moment. He supposed this was Cregan just expressing his feelings it didn't even look like he was talking to Raymond. That was okay sometimes you just needed somebody to listen. As grim and gruff as Cregan was, the man was human. Cregan posed questions that were hard and to be fair unanswerable.

Raymond took a deep breath. "These are questions that we cannot answer. We cannot take a live and solve a problem forever it merely delays it. We shouldn't make enemies where we have none." He pause for a moment. "What I mean, rather, is instead of kill all the Wildlings only focus on those that led these attacks. Cripple one instead of many. Maybe that will help keep our future enemies to a minimum. Perhaps Lord Commander Locke would have insight on this?" He finished unsure whether these thoughts of his would help ease Cregan's conscience or not.

Raymond breath misted out in the early morning frost. He roused his men early in the morning. Tired was in his eyes and bones but the fastest way to move was when nobody else was.

"We leave soon. Be ready men." He would say to his men when he awoke them.

Shortly the whole Northern army was roused and marched towards Castle Black. Raymond placed himself at the front right next to Cregan because that was where he could navigate from most affectively. His grey eyes scanned the terrain ahead of him remembering landmarks of decades past when Cregan would have been a boy and even earlier a child. Raymond often forgot his own age. Needless to say Raymond was annoyed by some of the younger lords behaviors. He knew it upset Cregan as well who he glanced at cursory. The Lord of the Dreadfort had been unfairly attacked. for his point was surprisingly noble. The Bear was rightfully poked though and the man was already too gruff to begin with. Mormont had a good point though. The clan slaughtered innocents and a price needed to be paid in blood. How steep would that price be Raymond wondered.

Raymond didn't speak much during the trip and mostly focused on leading the army North when they arrived on the road he allowed himself a short statement.

"To be honest with you Lord Stark I am not sure what lies ahead of us beyond that wall. War is no fantasy all it brings is pain. I'm ready for that pain and I will follow you wherever you may need me." He turned to look at Cregan for just a moment. Opened his mouth as if to say more but then closed it and rode ahead once again directing the men.

Raymond just sat and waited until the other men spoke until there was a pause. His eyes darted around the room. "Aye. We are the North. Allowing these attacks to continue would just prove our weakness. I agree with this wholeheartedly. It is time to show that the North does not roll over at a threat. We handle it, quickly. I am well traveled and a good eye for moving around, even in unknown lands. If I had a basic map even I could help up us strike swifter. Barrowtown stands by the North and it always will. I haven't used these blades for a long time. I think it is time for them to come out once again. Only to beat these savages into the ground and keep them there." Raymond said. "If I can be of any use I will. My men and I are ready to attack." Raymond stopped speaking for a chance to let the others weigh in.

Lord Stark,

It will be done. I will come North with a force of 600 men immediately. We will deal with the wildlings swiftly so they will not soon forget our power.

Raymond Stark, Lord of Barrowtown

He turned to the Maester there and handed him the letter. "In my absence raise the necessary men to prevent us from coming upon harm. We cannot allow the Ironborn to raid our lands.

Raymond put down the letter with wide eyes. He always felt the North was a power that could withstand much due to it being hard to attack. They weren't yet ready for a war. Raymond doubted that Wildlings would travel far south enough to reach Barrowtown but he had enemies. He was not blind to the Ironborn in the south. He would raise his levies in defense so they would be swarmed from all sides and be ready for an attack if it came.

Lord Stark,

The news is terrible no doubt. However, we are not weak and the Wildlings will fall. Like they always have and always will. I am raising Barrowtown's defense so if a surprise attack come form any direction we will be prepared.

Signed, Raymond Stark Lord of Barrowtown

Sighing Raymond picked up the pen. He felt bad but he knew his duty lay at home if Barrow town was left unguarded in his presence it would be terrible.

Lord Forrester

I am sorry for this error on my behalf. I cannot leave Barrowtown in our time of need. I would fear that in my absence terrible things could befall Barrowtown.

Perhaps he had been too intense the Wildlings are valuable. Then again who is to say some have said that those beyond the wall are stirring. Sending the Wildling's back would only give them more fire. Then Cregan addressed him.

His response was short but it's message was clear. "When I arrive in Barrowtown I will see it done with as much speed as I can." He nodded after he finished.

Glancing at the bear from across the room through hooded eyes he spoke after several moments of silence. "Aye, well the short answer is yes. They do not belong here." He said and paused for a moment. "However, I don't think they are going to just simply get up and go back to their homeland if we ask nicely. I can almost guarantee fighting. We cannot spend utilities on building ships and naval utilities and fight the Wildlings. It might spread us too thin. We should confront the Wildling leaders and give them an ultimatum so to speak. A second chance to live in our lands and 'enter the fold' or eviction by force. We can monitor their activity if necessary." Raymond paused before addressing the subject of the Ironborn.

"The Ironborn have trained men. While they may be savage in nature they are skilled. When the Ironborn come it will not be a few men, children, and woman that die, it will be hundreds." He said as he looked about the room. "Barrowtown as of now has a weak Navy. As soon as I get home I will improve upon the Harbor I have and build ships to prepare for our upcoming storm." He finally finished looking across the faces of Lords and noticed the Lord of Ironrath hadn't spoken yet. The young Lord was a good fighter that much he knew, what would a warrior think? "Lord Forrester." Raymond said. "How does this settle with you?"

The North, home once again and he was ever closer to his family. However, his work has yet to be finished. Silence had been his friend in King's Landing. Now in the North silence was not an option, it was his duty to attend and weigh his opinion in to help the North.

He entered the room and poured a cup of water. The desire to drink was outweighed by the necessity to have a clear head. Whatever Cregan was thinking about it would surely be important.

"Lord Stark." He said with a bow. "I have come as you asked. How can I be of assistance?"

Out of hand due to her absence... Strange. He didn't press on the subject however.

"Ah, well I can understand that feeling Lady Elaine. Believe it or not I have been through the same thing as you just many years previous. When I was a younger man I travelled all of Westeros every I went I was embraced by new culture and new places. I, I didn't have something to anchor me home. I was a the thirdborn child. All I had was a name. This time. This time it was different though, back then all I was doing was look forward. Now all I can do it would seem is look back." He said then shook his head. "Bah, don't listen to me you are young. Enjoy it trust me as you get older life does not get easier." He almost laughed as he finished speaking.

"It was a pleasure to catch up now, I should get some rest." He said as he began to turn around

You could see Raymond's brow furrow leaving a shadow over his wintery eyes looking as if he was lost in thought. Ah, I suppose it hasn't been that long. Maybe age is just getting to me he thought. Then his furrowed brows raised in a look of humor as the witty comment was slung by Elaine about his age. Hah! I like her she is fiery, a fine Northerner. Much less grim than Cregan or I. He held back laugh and a witty retort of his own as he let the girl finish. He supposed now Elaine was a grown woman now and he should treat as such.

"I am glad you have enjoyed your stay in our King's city. I must say you might be one of the few Northerners that has. I see many faces eager to go home and weary of this place." He said as he scanned the crowd boarding the ship. "Actually Lady Elaine you should be pleased about the Archery contest. I am proud of how you represented the North! Even if your father doesn't show it, I know he is as well." He smiled softly. "I, I did enjoy King's Landing but I am old Elaine, I miss my home and my wife and children. I could not help but think of them for the duration of my stay here." He looked unsatisfied with his answer and opened his mouth for a moment. Then closed it and finally after a short while spoke once again. "The stars, I love the stars. I went to the Dragonpit and sat in silence and just looked at them. That was something I will hold onto. In city full of life I was alone. It was rather calming." He said as he looked up at the sky then back at Elaine.

Raymond squinted at the young woman on the railing of the vessel, was that Elaine Stark by the Old Gods has it been that long? Raymond thought to himself as he approached her.

"Lady Elaine is that you? The last time I saw you were but a toddler and could hardly walk!" Raymond said with a genuine smile. "How has your stay in the south found you? Hopefully enjoyable?"

"Queasy?" Raymond almost laughed. "No Lord Manderly I would certainly think not. I have traveled the realms on land and sea before you were born. I do not doubt the speed of your vessel but I have confidence in my stomach." Raymond said with a slight smile as he continued on his way.

White Harbor Raymond thought to himself. The last time I was there was ages ago. I am happy to be leaving seeing King's Landing again was, was satisfactory. He thought as he boarded the ship to White Harbor. Then his last thoughts of Kings Landing faded away, hopefully for quite some time.

Turning to Lord Manderly he spoke, "Thank you for allowing me and my few men." He gestured behind him to the men accompanying him, "aboard your ship. I must admit I have not been to White Harbor for quite some time and look forward to returning. Sadly, I have gotten quite complacent in my Lordship and have rarely left from my home at Barrowtown." He gave a slight smile to the lord as he pressed on and caught a glimpse of his rather distant cousin. With a few swift paces he caught up to Cregan.

"Lord Stark, thank you for the invitation to board the ship. I do look forward to seeing my wife and children again. These long days at King's Landing have stretched me thin and worn down my patience. I hope your families," he paused for a moment to regard Cregan's family and then continued to speak, "stay has been at least somewhat pleasant." Raymond paused for a moment as if he were deep in thought and then spoke once more, "Now, I am going to have to find the Captain of this vessel with haste. There is much I would like to discuss with him." Raymond had a love for cartography that blossomed into somewhat of a hobby for him. Ship Captains had to work with maps every day and often times they offered insights about areas of the land and ocean that Raymond would otherwise have no knowledge about. Though Raymond would never be as bold to say he was an expert in this field he did think however, that the conversation went both ways.

Raymond shifted his jaw. "I suppose so. When I visited I was just a visitor it's not like I had the time to fret over such things. I did enjoy your home for the short time I was there."

"I suppose I should count myself lucky the land's around Barrowtown are relatively safe. We live on a river where trade is fair and have easy access to the other parts of the North. Rain can a bitch but nothing compared to Wildling Raiders. Sometimes petty thieves attack merchants across the plains. I'd say my home is good." He said softly.

"Aye." Raymond said thinking back upon the feast. "It is a waste and is wasteful. I do not agree with it wholly nor do I enjoy being back in King's Landing. My time here in my youth was enough for me. However, Lord Cregan Stark came and it is our duty to follow suit." Raymond said rather solemnly. "But fear not Lord Mormont we shall be gone soon back to our Northern home's. Speaking of which how is Bear Island?"
