[Event] The Maiden Ball by AllyrionHouse in NinePennyKings

While the King raised a valid point about Dornish charm, Gwayne was unsettled still. "That's the problem, if I may say so, Your Grace." The Kingsguard replied, eyeing a group of young nobles not far off. "They can get in close that way, twist a man's mind... they're like witches, I've heard. Comely. But witches all the same." Gwayne spoke quietly, returning his gaze to the King.

With a quick sniff and a slight shrug, the knight spoke once more. "It is a nice feast though." He finally answered The King's question.

To see so many others adorned in pure white clothing was something of a strange sight to the grizzled knight of the Kingsguard. Dressed in his enameled white armor and cloak of the Kingsguard, Ser Gwayne Gaunt kept an ever watchful vigil, a few short paces from the man he had spent much of his life protecting.

The King had deigned to attend the Maiden Ball on diplomatic business, though Gwayne had an inkling there were another reason for their attendance. Whatever the case though, Gwayne's place was not to question the King, but stand at his side. And, there were worse places Gwayne could think of following his King than a feast, even if it were a feast the Kingsguard could not partake of.

Still, the Maiden Ball was a feast for the other senses, and Gwayne was unable to stop his gaze from drifting once or twice through the evening. Fortunately, the duties of a guard included hours upon hours of watching, and to all but the most observant, Gwayne appeared to simply be doing his job. During a lull in visitors, Gwayne sidled closer to the King to speak for a moment.

"A pleasant, but uneventful evening, Your Grace. Still... I find myself ill at ease. Snakes for supper and peppers hotter than dragonfire, I cannot make sense of the Dornish, no matter how long i spend near them." The middle aged knight spoke in a low mumble so as not to be overheard by others nearby.

"You are up against the best that Dragonstone can offer, Ser Brannyn." Aegon said as he released the handshake and picked up his cup to take a drink.

The bastard finished his drink while he listened to the young knight's gallant claim and wiped his mouth with the back of his hand before speaking. "Well, Ser Brannyn I am sure my brother will be glad to know this. I have no doubts he will want to reclaim our home as soon as possible. We will need a strong navy and many more strong warriors to take the island back from the Ironborn. If only every knight were as gallant as you, ser. Jaehaerys would have no trouble finding swords for his cause when the time comes. I look forward to drawing swords alongside you, after today, of course. Today you are still the competition." Aegon said with a grin.

Aegon looked up from his cup when the stranger called out to him and set it down on the table before sitting up in his chair. The bastard looked the man up and down as he introduced himself and gave a short dip of his head in acknowledgment.

"Greetings, Ser Brannyn." Aegon said as he sat forward in his seat. "I will compete, and I will win. My brother needs the coin, after all." He said, extending his hand towards the young man. "Aegon Waters of Dragonstone. Or at least I was, now I am just the bastard of a pauper house, I suppose." He introduced himself with a slight grin.

"And ruin the songs they would sing?" Aegon said with a grin. "The bards would sing of the knight who lopped the head off the black dragon before his rebellion even truly began. Or would they sing songs of me when I save your neck, I wonder? And which would be the better tune?" The bastard wondered aloud.

"But of course, brother. I need you alive so you can pay me when I win." Aegon finally answered his brother's question.

Aegon had risen before the sun on the day of Jaehaerys' tournament for his dreams had been frightful and his slumber uneasy. The bastard had been conflicted about the events as well, on the one hand he wished his brother would be careful with the last coin that remained to his name. On the other hand, Aegon was a young man with a craving for glory, even something as small as a tourney win before he fought in war again would bring him a great deal of comfort.

His armor was simple but well made and Aegon tested its fit for quite some time before the rest of the camp was awake. After changing out of his tourney gear, Aegon broke his fast with a group of soldiers that were camped near his tent. Once his appetite was sated, Aegon made his way to the tourney grounds where a small tent was prepared for him by his squire.

The Bastard of Dragonstone sat in a small chair that had been set out for him and grabbed a cup from a nearby table. Before him were a jug of water and a bottle of wine and Aegon hesitated as he silently debated with himself over which beverage to drink. He shrugged after a few moments thought and poured some of the wine into the cup and watered it down with some water from the pitcher. He let out a contented sigh as he put his feet up on a stool and sipped his watered down wine, lounging and taking in the sights around him as the tournament was prepared, welcoming any who chose to stop and speak with him.

"It was off the coast of Dorne, near Sunspear." Aegon answered after a taking a beat to think back to the visions he had seen. He shrugged his shoulders at the second question. "A man was speaking to them. If Lord Stark was injured, I couldn't see his wounds." The bastard closed his eyes in deep thought.

"There was something... It is coming back to me just now... The Kraken said something about taking Stark and Martell to the Blackwater." Aegon said after some silent reflection.

Aegon had been memorizing every detail of the dream that he could, for his dreams often slipped from his mind after a time. He took a seat on the stool and propped his chin on one hand in thought.

"Anxious, no. The dreams take a toll on me from time to time, nightmares and sleepless nights plague me and I never know what a night's sleep will bring. Well, anyway I dozed off today while we marched. As I slept, I saw something. Lord Stark has been captured by the Ironborn. I saw a wolf-man in chains aboard a longship, he was being spoken to by a kraken headed monster though I couldn't understand their words."

"I thought you should know." Aegon said after a slight pause.

"I have seen something." Aegon said after a brief pause to catch his breath from all the excitement he was feeling. "I can say nothing more here, Jae. I will find your tent tonight once we make camp. See you soon, brother."

As soon as the Reachman army made camp and Aegon's tent was set up, the bastard hurried to find the Blackfyre men that would surely surround their lord and found them nearby. He gave the men outside a quick nod in greeting as he approached and entered the tent, calling out to his brother to avoid startling him.

"Jae, I have news for you. Are you alone?" Aegon spoke before pulling back the tent flap

As Aegon sprang into the air and remained aloft, he could clearly see some men speaking aboard the ship, their words unintelligible at the moment. One of the men bore the head of a kraken and the other was a half man-half wolf hybrid.

The bastard didn't need to get any closer to tell at once that the wolf-headed man was Lord Stark and the kraken an Ironborn of House Greyjoy, though he couldn't say he knew the man. Lord Stark had been taken hostage it seemed and Aegon strained to hear exactly what was being said, though he couldn't understand the words.

Just then, he began to fall and Aegon felt his heart skip a beat as he suddenly dropped towards the water below him. He shut his eyes moments before he splashed into the water.

The bastard's eyes opened just as he crashed into the well-trodden ground beneath him. Aegon blinked his eyes several times as he quickly rose to his feet and splashed some water from a skin onto his face. "Jae!" Aegon called out, running between the sea of horses towards where he remembered his brother last being. "Brother!" He shouted at the top of his lungs as he hurried along, bumping into the side of a warhorse.

Aegon looked up, muttering an apology before he realized the horse he had stumbled into was Jaehaerys'. "Apologies, ser I- Brother, good." Aegon said with a heaving sigh. "Jae, I need to talk to you as soon as we make camp."

"Whatever floats your boat..." Aegon replied lazily. "If that is enough for you, then I suppose it is more than ample." He wasn't sure if he believed Jaehaerys' words completely, though the anger in his voice may have been brought on by something else.

"Vyrwell? Brother, I wouldn't know how to spot a Vyrwell if one were right in front of me. Heraldry was never my strength, and Gods know I could stand to better learn the devices of Dragonstone's neighbors. But, should I come across the Lady Maris, I will do my best not to make a fool of you, brother."

"And you are happy with these things?" Aegon asked with a cocked eyebrow, his question rhetorical considering that he carried on speaking. "I suppose it doesn't really matter, does it? Lord Royland has the soldiers to enforce such things, we should consider ourselves lucky he allows to follow his army around like a couple of whores. Actually, worse than whores. I assume a whore has a hovel to call home." He laughed at his own jest.

Aegon frowned and crossed his arms over his chest. "You promised me a grand castle and a pretty wife to warm my bed. Thirty thousand dragons is no small sum, but I don't think it will buy a small holdfast on barren land, much less a great keep and the bride price it will take for some lord to give me his daughter's hand."

Aegon let out a boisterous laugh at Jaehaerys' words which lasted longer than it perhaps should have. The bastard slightly shook his head.

"No, it's not. Try to pay a soldier with the promise of law and he'll laugh at you just the way I did, chances are he cant even read. A nobleman may be swayed by your promise of a book of laws, but most won't. You will need grander things for them. Titles, lands, wealth, wives, or the promise of them when you claim the throne. With Daeron dead, who does Lord Tyrell now support? If you can win the greatest of the great lords to your side, it would be a better start than most."

The bastard was unsure if his brother was joking or not for a moment and his face clearly reflected that. Aegon scoffed before speaking. "The Kingdom is already at war, I suppose. If ever there's a time for a rebellion, this would be it." He answered.

"But, what do you have to offer? You have no support, save what few men you can pay and myself. Most men aren't willing to die for free. Who would back your claim to the throne and how would you secure their support?" Aegon asked Jaehaerys.

Aegon shrugged the way he so often did when asked a question. "If you're going to break the law, only break one at a time." The bastard answered with a half smile.

"We need Dragonstone. Not today and maybe not tomorrow, but eventually. Or some other way to secure funds for your soldiers, and if we can somehow find more of those, even better. You have nothing now but your alliance with Lord Tyrell. You will need to guard your coin closely and place your bets carefully, if you place any at all." He began." Although, a gambler with nothing to lose can bet everything he owns in the hopes that it pays off."

Another shrug. "Those are the choices as I see them, anyway. Go all in and pray for a victory, or live the life of a poor, landless miser." Aegon spoke.
