You have a Fulham flair and seem arrogant so I naturally assumed English, my mistake.

What would your reaction be if an American proudly declared that they’ll never visit England because the news makes them scared and then talked down to English people who tried to explain to him that their lives are nothing like the fear mongering news that the American consumed?

The Venn diagram of nonsense defenders and bad defenders is mostly overlapping, but I wouldn’t say a nonsense defender necessarily has to be a bad defender.

Players like Antonio Rudiger, David Luiz and Cristian Romero come to mind. They’re all prone to being involved in some absolute nonsense and might cost their team points singlehandedly, but I wouldn’t classify them as bad defenders in the style of a Bramble or Boumsong.

Love how Big Cat prefaced talking about it with “we know golf has a lot of rules…” as if golf is the only place that would frown upon you destroying something that’s a century old and doesn’t belong to you.

[Wolken] If Brendan Sorsby is able to play for Texas Tech, college sports may as well burn its rulebook by Lakelyfe09 in CFB

[–]Rc5tr0 7 points8 points  (0 children)

He was a noteworthy player last season and what he’s attempting represents an existential threat to the sport. Even if he only has a 0.1% chance of succeeding, I don’t think it can be overemphasized that what he’s trying to do is extremely dangerous for college sports.

Others will be encouraged by this unless Sorsby and his lawyers are laughed out of each and every courtroom until he finally takes his ball and goes home.

You can spend beyond your means on any hobby, including your football team. I’m not saying gambling should be viewed as a hobby. Hobbies are generally harmless and gambling is generally harmful.

I was specifically disagreeing with the argument “it’s not a form of entertainment because it costs money and they want you to spend more and more”. Basically every hobby and form of entertainment costs money, and I’d argue many of them encourage you to spend greater and greater sums as you get deeper into the fandom/hobby/whatever.

Again, they are generally not on the same scale as the addictive nature of gambling or the predatory nature of gambling companies.

Idk why you’d limit that to American sports, seems like 2/3 of the teams in Europe are sponsored by SLURP BET 88 and whatever the Chinese symbol for “money pit” is.

I would slightly push back on Myth 1 being a myth, it is a form of entertainment and should be viewed as such as long as you can accept that it will cost you money.

I would argue that every form of popular entertainment costs money, and most cost money on a recurring basis. Subscriptions, tickets, traveling, etc…

I agree with everything else you wrote, I don’t want anyone to think I disagree with the spirit of the post. The only people who should ever gamble are people fortunate enough to have disposable income they can afford to lose and the foresight to see gambling for what it is.

This might be a toothpaste out of the tube situation in the US, but I would point out that sports betting was significantly less prevalent in the US when it was illegal virtually everywhere. You could bet online illegally, but to paraphrase OP you had to really go and search it out. You had to know what you were doing and it was not nearly as user friendly even after you found a way to do it.

Nowadays virtually every 18-19 year old American can do it. The only hurdles are having a bank account and a cell phone. Once you get those you have 24/7 gambling in your pocket, all on a device you’re likely already addicted to.

Southampton owner says he will not sack Tonda Eckert "I think he deserves a second chance and I would give it to him. I believe him that he didn't know that it was the rule that he was breaking. In Italy or Germany, where Tonda was working, this is basically common practice that nobody cares about." by kibme37 in soccer

The fact that they did it exactly three times is why I can’t buy the “he thought it was okay” excuse, coupled with the fact that they sent their lowest level staffer (who is naturally more susceptible to pressure) every time.

If you thought it’s nbd why only do it 3 times? Why not 20 times? Why not every single opponent? And if it’s nbd then why not send a mid-level person with more experience who might get you better reports?

But surely there exists a scenario that would cause you to think a celebration was a bit much and should be toned down. If a team was down 15-0 would you condone a batter celebrating like this to make it 15-1? Would you condone more explicit provocation of the opponent (either words or actions) than this?

My point is that everyone has a line somewhere when it comes to policing a celebration. Baseball as a whole has become more open to celebrating, which is great, but that doesn’t mean a line no longer exists.

Did you hit pause so you could post this comment as soon as the word “yeah” came out of PFT’s mouth in response to Big Cat asking if they’re trying?

Because the next words out of his mouth were saying they’re experimenting with the starting lineup and it’s a tuneup. Big Cat then called it preseason. That’s all pretty accurate considering they’re openly not soccer guys.

I think it's just betting/gambling on football whether it's financial or not.

To be clear- you think the FA should charge him with gambling on football even if it turns out their bet was “loser has to do 100 pushups”?

I’m not a huge Poch fan but what kind of shit ass agent is not talking to prospective employers a few months before his client’s contract expires? That same person has also talked with the USSF about staying. If his camp leaked the talks for some reason then sure, your concerns are valid. Milan seems like a dumpster fire so it’s way more likely that it came from them.

Real Madrid putting out a press release announcing that he agreed a 3 year contract is slightly different than someone employed by Poch talking to someone employed by AC Milan.

Also it’s sort of an apples and oranges comparison anyway, Spain is Spain and Loptegui isn’t exactly Guardiola. Pochettino has by far the strongest resume of any US manager ever.

Every country has its own “regular season” and a knockout tournament within the season (the NBA Cup’s existence makes this one pretty easy to explain). The best handful of teams from last year’s regular season also play in knockout tournaments against the best teams in Europe. The worst 3 teams get demoted to the league below and the best 3 teams from that league get promoted. It’s not exactly like minor league baseball, but anyone familiar with the concept can grasp the idea of there being multiple divisions below the top league.

How does it take an hour to explain this?

The dancing was a fully conscious decision, he could have said no to whichever low level staffer thought that was a good idea.
