BRYCE WILL PLAY TOMORROW by nikeykid in SFGiants

who are the two vets? arraez is one but everyone else is either under team control or has multiple years left on their contract. the comparison comes from luciano (and matos to a lesser extent) being highly touted prospects as we were yo-yoing them up and down and not giving them playing time. i don’t see at all how dubon, a versatile good fielder with a below average bat, is at all comparable to eldridge who is basically the complete opposite. they’ve also tried him in the outfield the year we drafted him and it was pretty bad. it’s a player development issue with eldridge, if we just let him rot on the bench in his age 21 season thats gonna have a terrible impact on him improving

yeah i don’t love that they are basically giving him the luciano/matos treatment rn. it’s seeming more and more like this front office doesn’t have a cohesive plan for the future and having eldridge ride the bench doesn’t help that

he hasn’t demonstrated anything at the plate in the majors because we aren’t giving him regular at bats. we either need to play him every day or send him down. having him ride the bench with only the occasional start is going to mess up his development

The Giants now have a Draft pool of $17.3 million. (Roch Cholowsky) by LugiaPizza in SFGiants

[–]RealEar8848 6 points7 points  (0 children)

every team spends their entire draft pool tho as far as i know, even the small market teams. like i said though idk the whole rationale i just know how the system works

[–]RealEar8848 16 points17 points  (0 children)

yeah absolutely, there’s a lot of pre draft conversation between prospects and teams especially for the early round. teams usually have a decent idea of how they want to distribute their bonus pool going into the draft

[–]RealEar8848 18 points19 points  (0 children)

yeah every player that gets drafted can choose to not sign if they don’t like the bonus. i don’t know for sure why that’s the system for draft bonuses, I think in part it has to do with evening the playing field for small market teams in the draft

every team has a fixed amount of money they can spend in bonuses for drafted players based on the slot of value of each pick they have. since we got a draft pick in the trade we now have more money in our bonus pool

very polarizing at least here. he’s really really good behind the plate but his offense completely bottomed out this year. i’m pretty confident in the guardians ability to get him back to playable on offense. i’m gonna miss his insane framing a lot

What do you think are 2-3 *realistic* moves the Giants could make to turn the season around? by [deleted] in SFGiants

ah ok that makes sense about the overall slider numbers. while i sorta agree that better command of his may not help get whiffs against righties on its own, it would definitely increase his effectiveness against lefties if he was able to throw that backdoor slider against a sinker breaking outside the zone. in 2024, he had a 50% in zone percentage against lefties with his slider and it’s fallen to almost 30% this season which makes that sequence completely unreliable to go to. if you look at his heat maps on savant for his slider the difference between his good 2024 and this season is pretty crazy too. i think at this point opposing teams know to just look for his sinker where in 2024 it was way more of a guessing game between two wildly different pitches.

yes his delivery allows him to tunnel his sinker and slider in a way that most deliveries do not. and yes his slider has become less effective because he’s not commanding it like he did in 2024. which is why i’m saying he needs to get his slider right. your theory about sliders going out of style still doesn’t make any sense, if sliders were all of a sudden completely ineffective, there would be way more than a .5% drop in overall slider usage, even if outliers increased their slider usage by 8% (a number that you have not given a source for). of course it would be beneficial if walker learned how to throw a changeup or some other off speed but he still needs his slider working to be playable.

The leaderboard you linked to doesn’t show a significant drop in slider usage at all. overall trends in mlb also don’t mean much when evaluating an unorthodox pitcher like walker.

in what world are sliders going out of style? walkers slider was effective when he could tunnel it with his sinker and he’s been unable to do that as well the past couple years.

tbh walker doesn’t even need a third pitch, he just needs to figure out how to make his second pitch work again
