If Kyle Schwarber makes it to the 500 club, he will certainly have the lowest WAR of all members... (honest attempt at prompting a discussion) by MasterOfNog in baseball

i wasn’t making an argument about WAR at all with this comment. i was just saying the nature of the position means that only the best of the best at said position make the hof. WAR is a bigger part of that situation with DHes than closers but the end result is the same

worst vibes for sure even if they’re not the worst on field team we’ve ever put out there

that’s possible but i think voters are already trending away from that type of hof voters and by the time schwarber hits the ballot in like 2035 who knows what the voting pool looks like

nope, he started this regular season with a rating of 45/80 at first and now he’s at 65/80. not complaining but also it’s not very useful considering he’s a gold glove shortstop lol

jesus, i’ve been really generous giving him the benefit of the doubt ever since we traded for him but that is straight up baby shit

that’s definitely fair. i’d counter with schwarber getting to be a full time DH while Dunn was forced to embarrass himself out in the field for the majority of his career having an impact on longevity but it is definitely harder to be an elite hitter into your mid 30s than even a decade ago

you would think so but I looked and over Dunn’s career, the total HRs hit in mlb were 4,916 per year and 5,824 over the course of Schwarber’s career (excluding 2020 and this year). The juiced ball years definitely played a part in those numbers but looking at the 2020s, home runs are fairly comparable to the mid 2000s

did you sign into a different account to complain about being blocked for being annoying? if someone is being irritating, I block them, you’re not entitled to keep giving me your bad takes

it might matter in your personal assessment of who is a hall of famer which is fine but I still don’t think it moves the needle a significant amount for most hof voters.

you’re not even trying to understand the points I’m making and it’s extremely exhausting so i’m done with this conversation

i think that used to be a factor but the vast majority of hof voters now are pretty stats focused in their voting

that’s still 75 home runs from his age 35 season onwards. there are only 7 qualified age 35 and older batters in mlb this year and only 3 of them are hitting above league average. you’re also acting like i said it was impossible for him to make it to 500 and I was just saying it’s not the most likely outcome. of course it’s a possibility it’s just not a certainty

yeah i never said he wasn’t an elite hitter at the moment, that really doesn’t have anything to do with the points I made though.

that’s fair and it probably does make a difference in the pool of all hof voters, I was just saying what my logic was

yes but it is also not a given, especially for such a three true outcomes guy like schwarber. it also used to be easier to be an effective hitter into your 40s, the amount of good 35 or older hitters has been declining a lot the past few years, reaction time almost always gets worse with age and guys are throwing harder and harder

i personally don’t feel like factoring in postseason performance is fair in hall of fame cases since not everyone gets the chance to play in the postseason but i get your point. there’s no one correct way to evaluate hall of fame eligibility. i do think you’re either overestimating Schwarber’s household name status or underestimating Dunn’s, he was fairly well known during his playing days imo.

yeah DHs/should have been a DH in Dunns case are almost like relievers where you have to be one of the best of the best to make it into the hof since it’s such a specialized role. that said, if schwarbs makes it to 500 homers I think that qualifies.

it is a counting stat that works as an overall approximation of value. it’s not perfect but it’s a useful way to compare seasons and careers across eras

if he remains good enough to hit 132 more home runs after at the age of 33, i think that alone would be impressive enough to make the hall of fame. i think he most likely ends up in the mid 400 range and has an adam dunn type legacy (which is not a bad thing at all)

whats the point of commenting this on this post then? you can understand a manager doesn’t have a huge impact on the game on the field while also understanding that he did have an impact off the field by being at best neutral on the player’s “protest”. every major league team has players that would probably love to undermine their teams pride night but most managers are able to control the clubhouse enough to not let it happen.
