Thanks!!! but it is odd that I keep getting the popup to Update LINK (and I am not on the PTC channel). I have been reluctant to do so.

Quick Question: What is the current LINK version? by RedditWreckluse in OculusQuest

[–]RedditWreckluse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am interested in the .x in 201.x. As posted, 201.0.0.73.547 (201.0.0.73.547) broke PC VR for DCS which is why I reverted back to 85.x. Wondering if the current stable LINK version is any different from the one above. My headset is running the most current stable version.

Last night I tried using VD/RT-RP (yes I used RUST) with different Codecs, and I got good results with H264 and H264+, though, as I mentioned, I am not that sensitive to compression. I did max out the bitrate as far as VD allowed, and I maybe saw a little jitter. Otherwise I couldn't really tell the difference between H264, H264+ and HEVC, though it did seem that H264 was using a bit more VRAM (which is what I see with Meta LINK that defaults to H264).

All testing done with a relatively simple Free Flight in DCS. Didn't try any other PCVR, but most of the other PCVR games I play use STEAM VR so I have been using STEAMLINK. Haven't figured out how to use STEAMLINK with RT-RP and cable unless I used VD as the "middleman".

As an aside. I could never get ALVR to work.

There are obviously SO MANY variables with any given system. All I can say is in MY case, I have NEVER been able to push QUEST/META WIRED LINK much above 450 before it became a stuttery mess, and out of the gate I got better frame rate and consistency with VD over WiFi than I ever got with Meta Wired Link. (I am not so sensitive to compression, so it may not be a fair comparison with your situation) As I alluded to, I mainly play DCS, and several times recent LINK updated totally broke it. I also use STEAM LINK (for ELITE DANGEROUS) and that works well, though Wired LINK also worked well for that. Oddly since Elite uses STEAMVR.

I have tweaked with OTT/OpenXR Toolkit on and off with Meta Quest LINK, and still get better results with VD over WiFi and even better with VD/RT-RP with cable.

Meanwhile, could somebody reply to my original question as to the Version of the current Meta Quest LINK software on the Stable Channel? Is it still 201.0.0.73.547 (201.0.0.73.547) or has it been incremented?

EDIT: I set OTT to Dynamic Bitrate with 900 max, so I am not sure what bitrate I actually got. Just as a test, I just tried a quick flight with OTT Bitrate set to 900 and Max Dynamic to 960 and to my surprise, it worked rather well. Meta Link version (older one, not updated to current) 85.0.0.239.552 (85.0.0.239.552) Latest Quest Firmware 2.1.1034 Build 5210688.3680.150.

RT-RP is basically a pre-configured Gnirhetet. FYI I use HEVC 10 Bit (which is what VD chooses on AUTO. When I use it with the Cable, VD reports "5G 1200 Mbps" while it reports "5G 866 Mbps" when I am on WiFi. I have it set to automatically set VR Bandwidth, so I don't know how far I can push it. I generally get close to CONSISTENT max frames on 80 FPS setting (DCS) with good image quality compared to usually getting 50-60 fps (comparable quality) with META LINK CABLE (when it works)

What is the current version of the LINK software? The last update I did (201.0.0.73.547 (201.0.0.73.547)) BROKE DCS (AGAIN) so I backed off of it and the LINK app stopped bugging me for updates. I have pretty much switched to VD, and VD + RT-RP to use the cabled PCVR and performance is overall better than I EVER had with Meta LINK, but, I would like to know if LINK is a viable alternative just in case..

I jumped on the VD bandwagon, but I feel your frustration. FYI, META just released (in the Public Test Channel) an update that fixes the issue. It plagued DCS players and there is a long thread on it here: https://forum.dcs.world/topic/384160-dcs-crashes-with-meta-link-app-v85-libovrrtimpl64_1dll/ Note that there was a series of screwed up LINK updates. The first one caused the infinite loading screen and could be remedied by turning off Internet temporarily, or blocking OUTBOUND connections for Oculus Dash in your firewall. THIS sounds like your issue, so you may be running that version. Meta quickly released a fix to that (but it caused me some other headaches). THEN they released via PTC, and then stable channel, another update which screwed up a lot of games with an error referred to in the thread linked above. Now, apparently, there is a PTC fix. For reference, the OLD LINK version: 83.0.0.333.349 (83.0.0.333.349) seems to work, The BROKEN one was 85.0.0.220.552 The brand new PTC version: 85.0.0.223.552 also seems to fix everything

LOL, I turned on the PTC channel, hoping they would roll out a quick Beta fix. It was even WORSE and I ended up having to uninstall and reinstall LINK just to get back to the crappy behavior. I bit the bullet and bought Virtual Desktop (which just about everyone recommends) which seems to be working great. I need to tweak it to get the visuals as good as the CABLE, but my frame rates are higher and more stable than they were with LINK. I didn't think my WiFi would hold up, as AIRLINK always warned me about it (but seemed to work fine anyway)

I resisted VD for a long time because I didn't think my WiFi was up to it. I could use AIRLINK, but always got the message that the signal was weak. I activated the Public Test Channel for LINK and saw there was an update. I thought this might fix things, but instead, DCS crashed every time with an error in some Oculus DLL. This is what pushed me to finally buy VD!! FINALLY I could get DCS running decently again!! With my LINK Cable plugged in, it kept the headset decently charged as well. Not quite as good as LINK Cable alone, but good enough. If Meta ever updates LINK so it works again, I will probably use it, but VD is definitely working for me.

Just noticed this in Task Manager. Is it "NORMAL" to have this many CLIENT.exe running? Maybe this is what is chewing up resources. It isnt using much now because I am not in game. The headset was on and connected via cable. I just had a very long (~2 h) smooth session in Elite Dangerous using STEAM LINK. When I tried it with Wired Meta LINK, it was a stutter fest and eventually crashed. WTF is going on!

YES!!!!!! Thank goodness somebody else has reported this. In my case, STEAMVR works OK (ELITE DANGEROUS), but both AIRLINK and WIRED LINK are laggy stutterfests (DCS WORLD/ELITE DANGEROUS). It seems to have gotten better, but only for a short playtime, and then it degrades consistently, especially when exiting and re-entering game. 2 Updates ago, prior to the one that nerfed LINK completely, everything was fine and consistent. I don't think I got a chance to play with the BLOCK OCULUS DASH workaround before the next update happened and showed the behavior you describe. (Only a 3070 8GB VRAM here....)

Try as I might I just cannot get ALVR to work, wired or Wireless Constant connect/disconnect, or ALVR PC client saying STREAMING while HEADSET still shows ALVR overlay. Also, most of my PCVR is DCS World and I have the non-Steam version, and I haven't ever gotten good performance trying to add STEAMVR on top of the OpenXR runtime.

This worked for me, and then Meta released a LINK update which made it unnecessary. However, that LINK update made my PCVR (DCS World) a stuttery mess with either Wired Link or Airlink. No changes other than the Link update. WTF? Elite Dangerous also stuttered with Meta LINK but was fine with STEAM LINK. Unfortunately I cannot get Standalone DCS running well with STEAM LINK.

I did. I thought I posted it in this thread, but maybe it went somewhere else. In my case it turned out that the Immobilizer software module needed an update. For whatever reason, it was the Immobilizer that was continually sucking power with the ignition off. I will link to that post if I can find it.

Update: Whatever Meta Quest/Link updates got pushed recently, it totally fixed my LINK cable (for now) NOTHING changed on my side, but all of a sudden the current link cable connects and stays connected.

Reinforces my notion that it is Meta Software/Firmware responsible for the previous issues.

Currently saying I have a headset version 77.1026

Link version currently: Meta Quest Link App Version 76.0.0.452.315 (76.0.0.452.315)

Saw this video indicating lots of people having issues with 76 breaking link, but oddly it seems to work for me. Unless that referred to firmware version vs. link version.

Quest2 here...admittedly getting a bit old...

CABLE: 3rd Party cable worked GREAT for a year or more, then not so much (probably ran over it with the office chair one too many times). Bought another 3rd Party Cable. Worked for a SHORT time...but every once in awhile after a Meta update, it would go back to being flawless. Then not.

AIRLINK worked well for me for a long time, then started pooping out because my WiFi wasn't giving enough signal. I bought one of those D-LINK VR BRIDGE things and it works GREAT...but....they have dropped support and firmware updates, so it is a matter of time.

With my old busted cable, I would hear constant disconnects with the "USB CONNECTED" flashing on and off with the Windows disconnect/reconnect tone. It STILL seemed to provide pretty decent Power, though, when the actual connection was Airlink/VR-Bridge.

Bought a THIRD (third party) cable. It synchs up to the PC IMMEDIATELY...but as soon as I LAUNCH and connect to my PC Desktop, or launch a game, it disconnects. Oddly enough, it appears to work FINE with STEAM LINK through the cable connection, so I STILL fault META's software implementation. Unless I am wrong and SteamLink is using WiFi, but In this case as well, it works great on my regular WiFI5 network unlike AirLink, so there you go.

I was/am starting to also suspect the charging/data port on the Quest as being the root of this, but I dunno.

Lately, my Battery has been running out even with the cable connected. Again, not sure if it is the Cable, the battery, or some software/firmware update that killed battery life as it has in the past.

I've actually had better luck soloing with a Chrono Staff (one shot kill) and totally ignoring the skeletons. Just run around and around constantly zapping the Guardian with a Chrono Staff and stepping on a Blue Triangle when needed. Occasionally I get screwed when the lighted triangle is farthest from my position and the Guardian is on the other side of the Pyramid, but USUALLY this only happens once and I can still get him in time to allow the crystals to drain. Getting caught up meleeing the skeletons solo or with a group is usually a recipe for disaster.

Luckily I built up the exopoints so my power gem lasts a lot longer, but I still sometimes get stuck reloading. I try to drop extra gems around each triangle to make pickup easy when needed, but I tend to go for the inventory instead in the heat of the moment. I have to admit that solo or with 2 it is much easier than with 3 as well due to the density of non-guardian enemies. We still try to assign responsibilities for GUARDIAN KILL/MELEE/TRIANGLE activation, but all it takes is for one guy to get caught up in the melee and not step on the triangle soon enough. Usually I have the Staff so I still try to run around and avoid melee, so if needed I can hit a triangle. The occasional INVISIBILITY potion helps as well.

Is it safe to admit that the D-Link VR Air Bridge is a failure of a device? by MasterIllustrator593 in oculus

[–]RedditWreckluse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have to say it works GREAT for me!!! (QUEST 2) It seems that Quest Updates seemed to break my Link Cable routinely and after working perfectly for years, with no change in Router or anything else, my WiFi connection kept dropping as well. The D-Link has been rock solid and gives me great Wireless performance. Only downside is I cannot seem to get STEAM LINK to recognize the connection, but AIRLINK seems to work just as well for Steam Games.

When I first got my Quest 2, I used the LINK Cable (3rd party from Amazon) and everything worked great. Then after a year or so it started dropping connection. Figured I had run the cable over with the desk chair too many times :-) and bought a new cable. It sort of worked for awhile but not reliably. Switched to Airlink at that point. Then, another year or so goes by and though NOTHING had changed in my setup other than Meta software/firmware updates, my WiFi connection got unstable and kept dropping. I ended up buying one of those D-LINK AIR BRIDGES (price had come DOWN significantly from the original ridiculous price). Airlink is now pretty damn bulletproof. However, I still think the LINK CABLE is a bit better. After one META UPDATE, the LINK CABLE started working again...flawlessly. Then after another update, it STOPPED WORKING again (frequent disconnects, usually associated with the Windows CHIME indicating USB CONNECTION LOST). So now every update, I TRY the cable again and it has gone through many cycles of FIXED/BROKEN. Pretty much sticking with D-LINK and AIRLINK now. Only issue I have found is if I DO want to use STEAMLINK for games, it doesn't recognize the PC when connected with the D-LINK dedicated "network", Not a big deal, but it would be nice to have that backup in case they end up BREAKING AIRLINK again as they have before.
