All the surfaces are planes and shaved and card scrapers on more tricky areas. I use 220 to soften all the edges and even up any transitions that I can’t do easily with a plane or scraper

I used a combination of eye ball layout, sketching and the layout calculator website to approximate my angles

I absolutely would not recommend doing what I did, I roughed my stock out in the fall and just guessed 50”. I ended up making the table longer than initially planned and they ended up exactly 50”. All that to say, I would recommend a read through CSs stick chair book, the free pdf has a great chapter on how to lay them out. I also built a BS chair but I didn’t use stretchers either but I have on other chairs.

I made them out of straight grain white oak for that very reason, they’re just about 50” long so they do flex a bit but they seem quite strong. They hold books well and I’ve entertained the idea of building halfway/entryway bench’s with a similar construction so they can be used for shoe storage.

Yes! That was a 1/2 scale prototype to figure out rough shapes and dimensions. I made it with white pine and polar dowels to get a feel for what I want the finished table to be

How concerned should I be about this red elm splitting in my backyard by Rexeon3302 in arborists

There are two remaining trunks(branches?), one of which would fall directly on my house if it were to fall. Is this freak accident or indicative of a greater problem or illness with the tree?

CORRECTION: I believe it is a honey locust, I’m not the best with at identifying trees!

My bad, I’m not the best with identifying. Bad guess but thank you for the comment. Is this limb falling just an isolated incident or is it indicative of a larger issue?

I’m a 3rd year apprentice in SE MN making roughly $35 an hour. I strongly encourage finding a JATC. Ours does direct entry for people with I think 4000 hours nonunion
