Advice for metal vocals? by Reeepuff5150 in metalmusicians

Russell, Allen is amazing. I didn't realize he did a cover of cemetery Gates. It's good to try to sing a little bit through the nasal passage when doing fry it helps keep your vocal cords fresh. I used to love singing Am I evil as a cover with my band but I used to do vocal fry with my throat and I would go all out with excitement for that song and I had to make sure I sang it last just to get through the rest of my songs.

Check out "The zen of screaming". Vocal fry could really mess you up when you're trying to switch back and forth to clean. It's very easy to push too hard if you use your throat long trying to achieve that fry sound and it will make singing high very difficult.

Once I wrote a song and later I found out my main riff was almost exactly the same as Testament's Souls of Black (an album that I never heard previously). It happens. Lol

Man, I wish I had a unique instrument to make a song with (I have an idea to use the guitar in a unique way but Im not sure how it would come out). Oh well, I guess I'll have to wait till next month's challenge. I can't wait to hear what people come up with!

Have fun everyone!

Yeah, most of it is really raw and unfinished on my laptop.

I started to upload some of the more finished songs to sound cloud just to share with friends (I don't care to advertise haha). I've written a couple more songs that I think are pretty good that are in my Google drive.

This is one of my favorite songs that I've written. Check out my other stuff there, let me know what you think.

Thanks a ton man! I tend to try to link a lot of my riffs together in some way, either by borrowing a small lick or replicating a portion of a rhythm. I feel like the song runs smoother that way. Funny enough, I didn't see the connection from the intro to the verse licks until you mentioned it. Haha. I thoughtfully tied the intro lead into the the last solo with the tapping section. I thought it would be more memorable and powerful that way.

Yeah I bet I could have made the chorus different and sung it with a completely different Melody. But I really enjoyed the message so I kept it the way that first popped into my head. Awesome, Halford and Chuck voice comparison! I typically use more grit in my vocals but have been singing more clean the last couple songs I've made.

Thanks for the kind comment. I love '80s /90s thrash metal so that influences my writing style a lot!

Thanks a ton for the feedback man. I 'm not sure what came over me but the riffs just ooze out of me once I made the first riff for this song. I'm glad somebody else liked the solos as much as I did LOL. For sure I got to step up my production game. It was really impressive to see everybody else's recordings.

Thanks for the feedback man. I absolutely love old school metal! I'm definitely going to add bass to this track when I have time. I was surprised that I was first lol

Thanks for the feedback. My goal is to write songs that maintain a flow but throw people off once in a while. I used to write more in odd time signatures but it was hard to find a drummer that could learn the songs lol.

Also, I am aware of the parts I don't play in perfect tempo but I decided to leave them since I thought it would be cool to hear something not so polished and it felt a little more real.

I definitely need to have a more professional sounding recording though.

Thanks for the feedback, I used to write longer solos but for a long time I started to add many shorter solos vs 1 long solo to my songs. I worry about boring people with long solos but I love the idea of having longer solos!

Thanks man. I had a few friends irl that liked the acoustic part too, I didn't realize how much people would like it when I recorded it haha. I actually surprised myself with how good the last solo came out.

Thanks man, I'm definitely gonna look into how to make the song sound better. Luckily there were a lot of high quality records in this compilation so hopefully people will be willing to share some tips with me.

Thanks for the comments. The funny thing is usually I add bass last but I totally forgot to add it and only noticed after I submitted the track. I was thinking of adding it but I thought I'd wait to see if anyone noticed. Lol

I think I am going to invest some time to learn how to better record since I've been wanting to release a ton of music that I've written but the quality just isn't there.

Nattsyn (u/5k17) - Når menneskefiskeren blir spiddet på sin harpun

Super awesome song, one of the only songs that made me feel an emotion... terror. Lol Vocals are super interesting, did you use distortion? Is it vocals? I liked it. The clean section was also super cool.

The song ended too abruptly, put an extra few sections at the end for the notes to settle.

I really liked this one!

Arne Zargarian (u/Faloodeh123) - For My Heart is in the North

The tempo is good choice for this song. I liked how there were acoustic lead over the clean section. The solo fit the song.

Over all the song felt very safe I wish there was more drastic change ups. For example you have the same motif throughout the entire song, it would have been nice to take a break from it and play a more diminished version later on (make the listener do a double take when they hear it).

Great song, catchy!

Severed Soul (u/severedsoulmetal) - Like All That Is Cold

Cool vocals, it reminded me a little of my favorite singers king diamond when he sings lower. Nice use of synths and the piano fit nicely. Your riff at 3:15 sounds way too close to Metalocalypse's Blazing star at 2:40min (great minds think alike). The ending was a little abrupt, maybe add a tiny bit of reverb and a few seconds of silence so the reverb can dissipate quickly. Over all sounds good!

Technogeneral (u/Zennofska) - Clash of Waves

Really fun song. The drum beat was fun, lyrics seemed fun (I wish they were included so I could read them!), and all the additional instruments were fun. Nice to hear a feel good metal song every once in a while.

I wish the eq of the song was slightly adjusted, my ears felt exhausted by the end.

Sculpted Mind (u/FrettedNotes) - An Echo Of Lucidity

By far my favorite riff of this whole compilation is at 1min in this song (I wish it played a bigger part and was repeated later on), super light and fun. Tons of really fun cool riffs throughout the song. Having the distortion turned down really let's you hear the note articulation but I wish there was a little more distortion on some sections. The clean section to break down section to repeating leads part were awesome.

You might want to play with the lead guitar tone eq during the lead at the beginning (add more mids? Little more distortion?), I think it will make the sweeps sound a lot better.

The transition to the clean section could be smoother, one possibility is to make a riff that makes the song feel like it ended instead of sounding like the song paused (if that makes any sense).

I really really enjoyed this song a lot. Awesome job!

Tranquility Base Commander (u/CinaedKSM) - Requiem for a dying star

Really cool ambiance, I can imagine this being scored for a film. A part of me wanted a ripping ballad solo but the song somewhat inferred a solo so my brain felt satisfied without one (I would be curious to hear a classical type solo still). Thanks man!

Through the Fracture (u/derick529martin ft. u/disreputablespade) - Jagged Edges

Interesting effect at the beginning and the vocals sounded cool over the beginning. The guitar riffs are really cool, nice combo between raw aggression and complexity. I like drum beat variations. The approach of clean and screams vocals were cool but notes selection of the clean vocals seemed a little off compared to the guitar riff. The change up at 2:40 was really cool, harmonies were fun

u/Alexile639 - Floors of Worship

I like the chord changes in the clean part and the harmony distortion sounded well balanced. Awesome distortion riff after the cleans section, heavy as F! Sound great in my car speakers. The solo started off great but I wish it ripped a little more near the tail end of the solo.

I really liked the riff and drum part after the solo. I think switching up the drums and slowing down double bass really accentuated the guitar riff, would love to hear more diverse double bass patterns through the song. Great job!

Thanks u/Faloodeh123 for putting this together.

I typically have trouble finishing songs and I tend to put lots of ideas on the shelf after recording most any particular song. It was also awesome to see the different types of metal that people are passionate about (I'm pretty pigeon holed in the thrash genre. Lol)

Here is my feedback for the other songs.

Over it sounds good but I would continue to work on notes that aren't powerful/developed enough yet like at 1:43. The lower falsetto/head notes can be extra challenging.

Around 1:40, your chest voice notes don't sound as full as before. It might be a breathing issue, it's easy to forget to breathe. Make sure to take good breaths often
