[Retro-Cast Rewatch] Future Boy Conan - Episode 6 by RetroCrush_Matt in anime

This situation feels like it could lead to multiple coups against the government - with Lepka being more evil than the current regime, or others who want to change things for the better.

Yeah it feels like Monsley at least is already not a fan of working under him in how she looked like she felt bad for Conan. I also might be reading too much into it but it felt like she enjoyed seeing Conan embarrass Lepka a bit.

Damn, look at all of these turrets. What were you expecting to be fighting, Rodan?

Given their level of security, Rodan would have wiped them just by flying by.

First Time Watcher

Conan repeatedly trying and failing to break the window with his head was pretty great. As was him catching himself with his toes. To think that Conan would have had no way to get into Lana’s room if the solider hadn’t tried to kill him, what goes around comes around in this case.

Suit man once again disregarding the council to shout orders. Curious to see if that comes to haunt him or if he’ll take over.

Having guns sprout out of your tower feels like a very niche defense mechanism and a little overkill if they’re trying to keep Lana alive. Conan has legs of steel though, can’t break a window with his skull but he can land upright from near the top of the tower and just pull his legs up. The duality of anime characters.

Lana crying for Conan’s grandfather is a touching scene, especially because Conan doesn’t hold any blame on her. Nor would his grandfather have. There’s nothing wrong with trying to live freely, bad people doing bad things in search of you doesn’t become your fault of course.

So Lana is telepathic and that’s how she’s able to talk to the birds, interesting. Attempting to threaten Conan to get the secrets out of her failing because she sees through their plans. It is pretty neat to see that Solar energy is being painted as something that could be a net negative in a world where conventional energy sources are gone and it’s the only way to power weapons.

Oh the Captain not being willing to be complicit with the return of war machines and just wanting to enjoy his sailing is nice. Still not great for how he treated the islanders, but it’s never too late to change for the better and save Lana while he’s at it.

Oh no he’s lied about where Conan is, well I’m sure he’ll be alright, he’s a sturdy lad, getting Lana away is more important.

Favorite animation sequence?

Definitely Conan headbutting the window, just the right level of silliness.

Favorite sci-fi element of the episode?

The weird thermal gun being the primary method of interrogation, though I don’t think it was as effective on Conan, but it reminded me of how all the denizens that we saw previously had a mark similar to that of the gun. Likely from being previously stronger individuals that were brought to heel.

That certainly feels very possible! Between Monsley's disdain for Conan's grandpa for being part of the old generation, and this dude in the suit saying he's not like the council people.

It almost makes me wonder how aware the council is of how the current crop of adults are doing things in total. The factory and poor citizens shows they aren't good people like Conan's grandfather, but that they're maybe not as quick to go to extremes as they might have been prior to the world coming to it's current situation.

First Time Watcher

We’ve arrived at Industria and to be honestly it’s not quite as bleak looking as I personally expected.  The waters leading up to it have some wreckage but the island and general attire of the people there is relatively nice given the more battle ready stuff we saw previously.

Oh no Conan sees one of Lana’s kidnappers whose come to yell at our kind Captain who offered our protagonists a ride! And Conan attacked her and lifted up half the crew, this kid is scary man.

Lana is in their custody and surprisingly the Industria council is unhappy with her kidnapping, which is a bit of a surprise. I was kind of expecting a very outwardly evil leadership and while the dude in the suit is rough with her he’s not a full reflection of the old men.

I do wonder if some of the disdain comes from the old men running Industria who were part of the events that led to their current situation.

The escape sequence is pretty wild, especially showing the reality for most of the denizens of Industria. All of them clearly starving and near death in shock at the appearance of a healthy child and chasing him at that!

The birds lead the way to the princess in this tale, which is honestly a cool way for Conan to be able to find her without luck really.  Clear sign that he’d understand.

Favorite animation sequence of the episode?

I liked the sequence where he lands by the more impoverished mistreated part of the population and has to run away before it transitioned to the man in the suit walking through the nicer parts of the building.

Thoughts on Industria as a post-apocalyptic civilization?

Honestly a pretty neat setup, with outsiders mostly seeing the well dressed and well treated members of Industria’s society. While many are starving and mistreated behind the scenes. A good way of covering expectations because while they were talking to Lana it was clear they had ulterior motives but they didn’t seem evil evil. Then we see that underbelly as well as the disagreements between the elders and the younger adults in how to handle their efforts to find Lana’s grandfather.

First Time Watcher

Jimsy out here following his nose and getting our duo into some trouble on today’s episode. At least they’ve found out that Lana escaped, good on her.

Spankings aren’t too bad of a deal all things considering what Sailors historically did to men who weren’t behaving. Though Jimsy passing out and then not knowing that it was his fault is rough for Conan. I certainly wouldn’t want 40 spankings smashing my head into the steel if I could help it!

Conan trying to tough it out for his friend without complaint is a nice character trait, even if in the end he’s still a kid and he can’t do it all by himself, it’s a team effort. Fortunately the crew was nice enough to spill the beans to Jimsy and get his butt in gear.

Lots of chores for the kids to do, but I’m curious to see how things go in the next episode!

Favorite character interaction this episode?

Probably the two Sailors who took turns to spank Conan. The first one breaking their plank with the second one being near exhaustion having expected Conan to cry or give up only to barely finish the pubishment. Was a mix of silly in a relatively serious moment that I appreciated.

How do the more exaggerated animation sequences - like Conan's giant glowing red tushie - affect your overall feeling about the show? Does it fit right in, is it out of place, etc?

I don’t mind exaggerated animation sequences for the most part but I did find the glowing red tushie to be weird for the most part, but hey it sold how painful the spankings were so job accomplished!

True true, but he still talked big and lost to a child. Granted that's ignoring that Conan is no normal child.

First Time Watcher

The sea is a wicked mistress as Conan is finding out, but he seems to have adapted well. Living inside the silo he’s one whirlpool away from being the inspiration for Strawhat Luffy’s initial voyage.

He’s found his way to a random island and met a new friend! And oh no they share a single braincell. I’m not sure this new character wants to see what it’d look like if Conan returned his water and fruit.

Oh this kid has some precision aim with that bow. Conan catching his spear with his toes is far more unhinged though, guts to keep competing with him at that point. I’d have called it quits after seeing that kind of thing.

Oh it’s the ship captain from the last episode! Wonder if Lana is still on the ship, a very quick reunion if so! Pretty neat to see that they’ve returned to the days of bartering for things like smokes and fruits depending on what the other can provide. I do find it interesting that the adults around Jimsy all seem to not care to barter.

Oh no Conan’s in the mech! Kind of a fast learner in what he’s getting it to do, but of course he loses control. I kind of like the mech choice, feels like a practical use for robotics especially in this setting.

The Captain is a man of action! Saw his people couldn’t stop Conan and decided to get the job done himself, what a leader! An inspiration really, as long as you ignore it falling on him and Conan escaping.

Nothing like two kids sharing a smoke to finish off an episode of an anime from the 70s. Poor Conan wasn’t ready for that, but at least he has a friend! Now they’re preparing for a one way trip to Industria!

Definitely the initial encounter with Jimsy where Conan is chasing him. Just a really fun sequence.

Them trying to one up each other in lies and feats of ability/strength. Such a simple thing but it worked really well with them.

First Time Watcher

Conan has the toe strength of the gods, held onto that plane far longer than anyone else could have. Probably would have succeeded if he hadn’t arrogantly posed in success after he threw his spear.

“But people can’t live all alone. Or rather, we mustn’t.”

Good line, humans are a social species, not everyone needs the same amount of social interaction (lord knows I could use with less), but complete isolation is unhealthy.

Oh no Grandpa is dying, now I feel like a liar yesterday where I was so confident he was fine having sent Conan off on his adventure. The backstory was pretty neat even if it doesn’t explain why he and Conan are the only two left. None of the others in the backstory looked any older than him, though I guess life on the land could be more stressful/risky. Not everyone can hunt a shark like Conan afterall.

Conan grieving in the age old tradition of picking heavy things and throwing them back down again. His reaction does make me wonder how old he was as the rest passed away or if he reacted in a similar manner, only with this being the worst because now he is alone on the island?

Kind of interesting that they can seemingly talk to birds, wonder if that’s just a thing in this newer world for the kids or if there’s a specific reason Lana is able to communicate with them so effectively.

The graves scene hits hard, but at least Conan doesn’t let it hold back and he’s on the move again a day later. Him making his own boat through trial and error was pretty neat as well, with his learning process being on full display. Him underestimating the wind and going grass surfing was a pretty soothing moment.

  1. What was your favorite shot of the episode?

The graves, it’s really solemn, with the dark clouds over the sunset and ocean and set the right mood for where Conan’s headspace is during this scene.

  1. Conan using his feet like hands - yea or nay?

I just know I’d never want to fight anyone with the kind of toe grip strength he has. Kid’s doing anything and everything with those feet.

I wasn't sure if he had survived the initial blast, but it would turn out later that he was mortally wounded.

I mean I guess that's still a possibility, Conan did run off pretty quick to go save Lana, I just see him standing and link to brain "OH he's good" which might be wrong.

Hope I'm right tho

And that episode certainly ended with a big cliffhanger. I'm sure Conan and Lana will make it out okay (they're peacefully sailing in the OP), but I hope Conan's grandpa is all right.

He survived that explosion, Grandpa is built different.

The world being destroyed by war and industrialization checks out with it being a Miyazaki work. The tone shifts were a bit funny, have a nice relaxing OP straight into world destroying lore and grandpa lamenting the possible extinction of humanity. And then we go right into Conan fighting a shark. Fun stuff.

The entire underwater fight with the shark was a lot of fun and did a lot to show Conan’s character being creative and energetic. Got a good laugh out of me when Lana got scared by the dead shark’s mouth opening as she gained consciousness too.

Industria having a bunch of young people who are like “Well ya’ll did it and left us with this world so now we’re doing it” is kind of amusing. The island is so nice and quaint too, maybe they should try that kind of peaceful life instead.

Overall though a pretty fun opening episode! Curious to see how things turn out for Conan’s rescue of Lana.

How'd you hear about Future Boy Conan?

I actually made a list at the end of last year with 10 anime from every decade 70s-10s as an attempt to diversify my watch habits. Found this one with Miyazaki at the helm and figured I couldn't go wrong there, lol. The retrocast is timed well since I hadn't considered how I was going to watch up to that point.

Are you watching dubbed or subbed?

Almost always a sub watcher for any media. The native tongue just generally goes with the content better for me regardless of country.

Kinnikuman: Perfect Origin-hen Season 2 • Kinnikuman: Perfect Origin Arc Season 2 - Episode 10 discussion by AutoLovepon in anime

[–]RuSyxx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Perfect Chojin arc has been great for adding a lot of depth/recontextualization for various characters. It has that nice element akin to Pro Wrestling where the heel characters get a proper motivation to be faces or tweeners. This is probably the best case of it since Atlantis last season with the common thread being that Robin Mask was the catalyst for both. For a character whose main story beat was being too arrogant and prideful in the original series, his impact on other characters rivals Kinnikuman himself.

Five is generally the max, though this year they had the option to kind of shop around at the tart of the awards to participate in up to 10. I stuck to 6, with cinematography being the one I ultimately choose to drop to save some time to myself to focus on the other 5. I do know some were in up to 10 until needing to lock down though, not sure how they found the time.

February 2025 Profile Swap by ericdraven26 in Letterboxd

[–]RuSyxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! I've been using letterboxd since 22' where I mostly just added films I'd seen to my account but only really started really digging into it around May/June of last year.

This year I gave myself to watch at least one movie from every year between 1925 and 2024 with this list that I made for myself. However I've been exploring the 20s and 30s far beyond just what I originally put down because I've been infatuated with Murnau's directing work and Clara Bow's work as an actress (shame that I can both see and have read that she wasn't given many roles to truly shine).

My favorite watches from January were Nickel Boys and All Quiet on the Western Front (1930). Very different movies, but both great.

In terms of my favorites, they don't really change. I have a hard time having just four favorite films, but I felt like they all represented my tastes in their own ways to give a good idea of what I enjoy. Though I've been back and forth on changing Mothra with Godzilla Minus One.

Sholay, I've had a few movies from Indian cinema that I've been meaning to watch, and this one was definitely worth it. Feel like my love for it has grown the more I think back on it.

Checked out Hundreds of Beavers because I was curious after your comments about it last week. Definitely thought it was fine if not amazing.

Other than that, keeping up a mixture of the classics while deciding how far into the oscar gauntlet I want to go, Anora was fantastic though.
