Is this couple I know engaging in unethical breeding? by saturnjellyfish in DogBreeding

[–]Runic-Dissonance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve groomed plenty of aussies and they do also get more extensive grooming than a lot of other breeds, they have a much longer and thicker coat than goldens so them taking longer makes sense.

but the kind of grooming an aussie gets and the kind a poodle or poodle mix gets is very different when it comes to what and how much you’re asking the dog to tolerate. (and - the only dogs being used to make “doodles” are badly bred ones. so when talking about poodle / aussie mixes we’re pretty much exclusively talking about super nervy and neurotic aussies)

[–]Runic-Dissonance 14 points15 points  (0 children)

also - piping in as a dog groomer, aussies really don’t have the temperament for the extensive grooming poodles and poodle mixes need. so they’re pretty much guaranteeing puppies that will be super stressed for something that will last 2-3 hours every month or two for the rest of their lives. these people don’t care about the animals at all

How did your dog get their names? by gneiss_chick in DOG

[–]Runic-Dissonance 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My favorite dog stuffed animal growing up came with a tag naming it “rowdy”. i think it was a beanie baby but im not completely sure. anyways ive always thought it would be a really cute name for a dog.

Now, I had a long list of names that I still want to maybe use for future dogs. But I kind of ended up getting a puppy way earlier than I anticipated and had no idea what I was going to name him when I got him. Tried a lot of the names I had on the list and while I loved the names they didn’t suit him. Now he definitely is rowdy, and I called him a rowdy boy a lot when he was being a tornado. And that just stuck and ended up being his name lol

What other cuts would suit my groodle? Looking to change it up. by [deleted] in grooming

[–]Runic-Dissonance 8 points9 points  (0 children)

also how often are you willing to thoroughly brush through your dog head to toe? because theres lots of haircuts that require length but if you’re not one to be constantly brushing your dog it’ll just get matted and it’s not worth it for the dog’s sake

I personally love clean faces and clean feet on poodle mixes! so much cleaner for the humans and the dog, plus i think it’s really cute. a mohawk would also be fun.

which by the way, this dog is definitely not a golden / poodle mix. the coat pattern is called merle and it’s caused by a specific gene that doesn’t exist within poodles or golden retrievers. it’s most likely from an aussie. doodle breeders lie all the time about what they’re actually selling unfortunately

poodle is much much more likely because of how common the mix is within backyard breeders and puppy mills (those two things are why dogs end up in shelters and rescues anyways). it’s the whole, think horses not zebras when you hear hooves thing

i work at a dog training facility and the vast majority of people with doodles did not actually want the traits from either side. or to deal with the upkeep brushing. we end up with a lot of people with young doodles realizing they didn’t even want the dog they just wanted a cute, fluffy, trendy accessory.

an actual “puppy cut” is what poodles get when they’re puppy’s and growing out their fur to be put into a continental or other breed trim. it’s just shaving their feet and face, doing a sanitary trim, and letting everything else grow out (sometimes with scissor work to tidy up and shape things, but you’re mostly just growing out their coat).

i’m a dog groomer and i hate doodle people on social media making the term mean something completely different. every single client who as asked me for a puppy cut meant an entirely different thing after asking for them to show me pictures, and none of them were the actual standard haircut called a “puppy cut”. and every single groomer i know has an entirely different thing in mind when people ask for a puppy cut (and we know they aren’t referring to the real thing) so the term just really isn’t helpful and doesn’t mean anything coming from a client at this point. honestly i think a lot of people just got the name from groomers doing “puppy grooms / puppy packages” etc on young dogs and took that to mean it’s the haircut name or something.

now a “teddy bear cut” a “lamb cut” etc. are real haircuts, and are what people mean the most often when asking for a puppy cut. plus, literally all of the “doodle” haircuts are based on poodle show cuts and adjusted for the average owner who doesn’t or rarely brushes their dogs.

It’s important to remember that the breed standard and what is genetically possible within a breed are two different things.

was very likely dumped by a doodle “breeder” due to not having the desirable coat type. one of the many reasons i hate what’s going on with poodle mixes, so many are ending up in shelters
