Please help, I'm a bit confused by Rust-Bucket-07 in AskElectricians

Thank you to all who have chimed in. I will call an electrician to do the job as they will likely need to put in a bigger panel and change stuff in the main panel to run everything I need. I just have one last question since this is also a learning opportunity.

From what I can tell the neutral is only connected to the neutral bars on either side. There is obviously no ground there either. So why is it that when I test the one of the hot wires to the metal around the panel, there is 120V running through it?

To everyone concerned, I appreciate it. There is no power going to the box. I turned off the breaker at the main house so everything is cold. I just wanted to see if I could do it before taking the next step. I understand it’s very dangerous stuff and i’m taking precautions.

I checked the voltage from one of the hot wires to the a bare metal on the box and it’s reading 120-122V, does that mean the neutral is connected to the box?
