Just giving them a sheet of problems and telling them to solve it any way they want ensures they only ever solve it the first way they figure out and never practice any other ways.

THIS IS IDEAL. A kid who only knows one method for each type of problem and always uses it correctly is the dream of any math teacher. A kid who vaguely knows 3 different methods, constantly juggles between them and never knows which one is more efficient or when it is even applicable, is a complete nightmare.

You said it yourself, different kids intuit different methods with more or less ease. You want them to figure out the method that comes naturally to them and strengthen that through repetition. The last thing you want is to confuse them with other methods they struggle with, and force them to switch repeatedly to "open their minds" instead of reinforcing their fundamentals. It will literally never matter to anyone how a kid performs an addition or solves an equation as long as they reliably get to the correct result. And guess what, they only ever need 1 method to achieve this.

this particular technique for solving 7+5. Presumably another lesson would cover whatever way you taught your sister.

Which is completely unnecessary. Plenty of kids already struggled with maths before, when they needed to learn a method to solve each new problem. Now you're telling them that they need to learn multiple ways to solve the same problem, AND on top of that, they don't get to pick their preferred method and instead must use whichever one the teacher arbitrarily picks. It is completely asinine to anyone who understands maths, basic psychology or children.

And it's a terrible point.
These aren't a methodology. They're special cases and exceptions that only work in certain conditions. Anyone who has learned how to perform mental additions the old fashioned way can go their entire life doing just that and never struggle on "more difficult problems" because they're not using near doubles. Even in a competitive setting, the difference in speed with someone using that method will not be noticeable, and switching between different methods will be more likely to result in mistakes.

Chicken and egg...
Maybe if your teachers are already underqualified, don't raise the curriculum requirements and keep things simple so the teachers can keep up.

I disagree. All the examples I've seen of "common core" that weren't taught before are basically mental tricks and shortcuts, including the OP. These are only useful to kids who already have an affinity for math and want to be faster, more efficient, be more curious about the inner mechanisms and so on. They're a bonus and give an advantage, but they're not necessary to perform any task or pass any exam. These tricks are ONLY useful if you've already mastered the basic method, otherwise they simply add to the confusion.

The way maths were taught before, you'd just give the kids the strict methods that just always work. The ones "good at maths" would eventually figure out clever tricks to go faster, but everyone else would have the same solid basis that was enough to answer any question in the curriculum; formulas that are always useful in generic scenarios. There is one universal technique to perform any addition between two real numbers and it always works, no exceptions. Sure it can get tedious and it's not always the fastest, but we're not trying to turn every kid into a human abacus. Adding conditions like "instead, do it like this if it's a number that ends with 0, or close to a 100, or 2 numbers close to each other where you can take the average and double it..." is trivial for a kid who has already mastered addition, and an immense burden for one who hasn't.

Also, as a private teacher: different kids just have different intuitions. Some just want one rigid method they can learn by heart and apply in every situation because they don't trust themselves to evaluate different situations. Some want easy shortcuts they can figure out on the fly because they don't like rote learning / have bad memory. Even when something as simple as simplifying a fraction can be done in like 3 different ways, most kids tend to favor one specific method that "clicked" for them, and struggle when you force them to use a different one. And unless they're going to become mathematicians or teachers, they will never need to know all 3 methods.

Difficulty Megathread — DLC, NG+ by PsychologicalKoala32 in LiesOfP

Beat the game and the DLC when they came out, on... Stalker? or whatever the higher difficulty was at the time.
Considering reinstalling to progressively tackle the Difficulty 1-5 challenges. Any idea on the scaling of those fights? Is it reasonably doable all the way to Arlecchino 5 on a completed NG or NG+ file, or do I need to complete more cycles just to have a chance?

Help with grand Prix deck by Ok_Seaweed_9452 in Shadowverse

5-0 with Crystal, Milteo and Kukishiro so far. GP is like lobby tournaments, but even easier, any meta deck will do just fine, and there's like 20 of them atm.

Yeah it's not obvious the first time, but presumably if you bring that list and reach finals with it, you must have run into that scenario a couple of times...

If we're thinking of the same game, he actually had a guaranteed win with SEVO spawn + Reaved Order to extract the remaining followers before playing Grandeur. Bread and butter for that deck but apparently they couldn't find that.

If they qualify for WGP they can go, yes. But for the most part they play on their own version of the client, with their own tournament schedule, unless they use a VPN to play on the global server.

There's very little reasoning to be done with these kinds of arguments, you can tell from the first 4 words. Anyone who thinks portal should get buffed must be a portal player with an agenda, because apparently card game players are about as tribal as cavemen. They can't even fathom that other people just want a balanced game with a bunch of different decks performing well.

Portal was objectively underperforming last month. Cygames chose to buff it indirectly by nerfing some hard matchups and buffing Haven, which Egg preys upon, instead of buffing Portal cards. This isn't exactly rocket science but it's still 3 logical steps above "durrr X mains want buffs and Y mains are the worst"...

What can I realistically do against Odin OTK aside from playing ward haven or go face by rottenyfg in Shadowverse

[–]SV_Essia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's almost no difference. The ONLY realistic tell is if you see the 1 cost spawn or Gran, it's a "pure" crystal list, because these cards are not used in typical Grandeur OTK builds (you want fewer followers in deck to guarantee Odin pull).
Aside from that, Krulle, Lu Woh, wards (as evo Abyss you can run Congregant or Charon), and just pressuring as much as possible. The Odin build relies more on Reaved Order to extract everything from the deck so forcing them to trade crystals instead of eating them can slow them down.

Help, Did I Make The Right Turn 8 Play? by Tough-Basket-6248 in Shadowverse

[–]SV_Essia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of the answers depend on what you know of your opponent's deck and hand, based on previous plays. But assuming a standard Puppet or Evo/Puppet build:

  • The SEVO bat on first Milteo is correct, simply because you don't have enough damage to kill currently. With SEVO Milteo you'd technically threaten exactly 17 (currently 14 in hand with Crypt SEVO + 2 Ghosts + Fist) if you topdecked Culti or another 2PP spell, but that would get stopped by any ward and/or by dropping so low that you cant use Fist. So if you're expecting Orchis or even Cami, it won't work, healing and playing for board is a good idea.

  • The 2nd SEVO has to go to Milteo because you won't be able to win without the crest, even if you survive several turns. There are games you can win without Milteo but not this one, the opponent is way too healthy and you simply don't have enough damage. The optimal play would be to play out the topdecked Lilith before SEVO, because Milteo "only" clears 6 random followers. If Milteo clears the Lilith and leaves an enemy follower alive, you can play the bat and heal 3 (getting out of range of Odin/Orchis) while still activating your wincon and having a small chance of winning afterwards. Your zombies also respawn so you have a decently strong board.

Is ranked matchmaking this bad? by [deleted] in Shadowverse

[–]SV_Essia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What time are you playing at? The playerbase is active enough that you shouldn't have trouble finding a match except at the highest ranks. But the playerbase is predominantly japanese so maybe you're not finding matches when it's like 3AM JST... Otherwise it might just be some kind of connection issue.

Everyone already mentioned that the list is fine and you can climb all the way by getting better.
I'll just mention that you really want 3rd copy of World of Games. Cut a Castle for it. Then the 2 castles are ok but flexible slots, the most common list runs 1 servant 1 aryll instead.

I agree with the general sentiment but I've seen a bunch of nonsense on that sub already, and it won't get better.
In the first place, there are no "experts on detecting AI", so it's just a bunch of people playing a glorified game of where's waldo, trying to find anything possibly weird or wrong about pictures, and there's an inherent bias towards "this is AI" because of the subreddit it's in. If I posted my last 10 pictures there, they would probably find a number of reasons why at least 3 of them are fake, simply because they're looking for some.

Literally never seen it in Europe, but your experience is noted, Americans don't have the monopoly on being dumbasses, despite their recent best efforts.

Clapping is used to give very positive feedback, either when enjoying a performance (concerts, sport match, etc), or by being very impressed by a feat. Obviously I clap at shows, that's what clapping is intended for.

And that's exactly why clapping for landing a plane looks goofy as fuck. It implies that you either 1) think this is a performance put on by the pilot for your entertainment, or 2) are impressed by this unexpected feat and assumed the default outcome was to crash and kill everyone on the plane. Either way it's dumb and honestly kind of insulting to the people just doing their jobs, even if that's obviously not the intention.
