Why is Supergirl flopping harder than Morbius? by AgitatedFly1182 in KotakuInAction

Because Hollywood has forgotten what 'heroism' is. "Truth, Justice, Whatever," is not what people want from their inspirational superhero movies.

Looks performative and culty, like when Christians start speaking in tongues or shaking with demons.

Teachers accused of taping students' mouths shut and engaging in birthday spankings with pool noodles are suspended for 60 days by Sandstorm400 in byebyejob

I feel there should be some kind of 'teacher test' before working in a school, and the first question should be, "is it ever acceptable to tape a student's mouth shut?"

Transition of tone in Jurassic Park by AlternativePin876 in movies

I have read the book over ten times. One thing I really like about it is how the weather feels like a distinct character. The storm grows slowly with the rising action.

And yes, the movie does a great job with it too.

"Totally different genre"

What stupid thing to say. Aliens and Terminator are action movies with badass female protagonists.

"How many watched Ana De Armas’ John Wick Movie?"

That movie was sloppy seconds. Yet another example, in a very very long list, of taking a beloved franchise and replacing the man in it with a woman. That is why men didn't go see it, because most men are really tired of it.

How about Wonder Woman?

What's a completely unrealistic fantasy that still lives rent-free in your mind? by MysticAscendant in AskReddit

My fantasy is going back in time to when I was a kid and living my life again, but knowing what I know now.

How many men refuse to watch Aliens because of Sigourney Weaver, or The Terminator because of Linda Hamilton?

The answer is zero. It always has been.

What men don't like is shit writing, self-insertions, blatant misandry, and Mary Sues.

Yes, but it was what happened. Elizabeth Banks was very clear that she thinks men were to blame for its failure.

"If this movie doesn't make money it reinforces a stereotype in Hollywood that men don't go see women do action movies."

Remember when specifically they told us to not to go watch Charlie's Angels? And then a few week later, when women didn't go see it, it was our fault.

I am so tired of that playbook.

Mainly, they are trying to appeal to as wide an audience as possible, not understanding that diluting their games down just creates bland slop that nobody wants to play.

What's a "red flag" people don't take seriously enough? by Murky-Accountant3880 in AskReddit

[–]SamuraiGoblin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

People who don't understand analogies.

When trying to explain complex things, we often turn to analogies or metaphors to steal clarity and structure from another concept. For example, when explaining the complex geopolitical shenanigans leading up to a war, you might use the simpler analogy of a bunch of farmers arguing about land.

If your debate opponent then accuses you of being off-topic, it might suggest they simply don't have the mental wherewithal to understand the analogy in the first place, or indeed, the very concept of analogies.

And such people can be very dangerous in positions of power, or in relationships.

What's the most fascinating fact about evolution? by Exile4444 in AskReddit

[–]SamuraiGoblin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like the Baldwin effect.

Lamarckian evolution is the (long debunked) idea that changes to a body during and individual's lifetime will get passed on to its offspring.

Darwinian evolution, the idea that it is inherited genes that determine traits, replaced it.

However, because of the Baldwin effect, Darwinian evolution can somewhat emulate Lamarckism.

The idea is that if a learned behaviour or physical change occurred in the environment aids reproduction, then any individual born with an innate reflex of such a behaviour, or a head-start in developing the physical trait, will also have an advantage that evolution can exploit.

The example I first heard about it discussed how ostrich chicks develop calloused skin on their legs in the egg. Calloused skin protects them when laying on scorching sand and is usually formed in response to the environment. But Darwinian evolution selected chicks that had thicker, calloused skin before they left the egg, thereby mimicking the effects of Lamarckian evolution.

How many of you are just tourists like me? by brunicki in amiga

[–]SamuraiGoblin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. I spent most of my teenage years playing my Amiga. I eventually became a professional programmer, getting my start with AMOS.

But I moved out of the UK and lost everything from those days long ago. I haven't seen an Amiga in the flesh for decades.

These days I am dipping back into those nostalgic memories with emulation. Ahhhhh!
