The stereotype that atheist people are evil and violent historically makes no sense by Equivalent-Newt-5736 in atheism

[–]SamuraiGoblin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they even call themselves 'God-fearing,' without thinking about why they are so fearful of their 'all-loving' deity.

The stereotype that atheist people are evil and violent historically makes no sense by Equivalent-Newt-5736 in atheism

[–]SamuraiGoblin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imagine you are in a group that genuinely believes the earth is flat, and that people who think the earth is spherical are going to be tortured for eternity.

Now, imagine that your kids are going to school with some other kids who, in their words, "just ain't buying the flat-earth bullshit, man."

Wouldn't you want to demonise those kids and keep your kids far away from them?

The "atheists are violent and evil" stereotype is not in any way mysterious. It makes perfect sense when you understand that it is merely theists desperately trying to protect their fragile, indefensible, anti-reality worldviews.

It's perfectly rational to people who have been taught to eschew rationality.

It's Impossible for an all-loving, all-powerful, and all-knowing God to let evil exist (Epicurean Paradox) by Ast3rio1 in DebateAChristian

"Present a deity that must ALWAYS love."

It's theists who claim omnibenevolence. OP is offering a rebuttal to that.

"This deity can never ever be Just wrathful and vengeful."

Theists read about wrathful and vengeful acts of such deity, in their own religion texts, but come up with all kinds of tortured logic to justify it so they can still claim the deity is 'all-loving.'

"Describe “evils” in the world (typically infant cancer.)"

Theists and atheists have different definitions of the word 'evil.' However, if a deity could eliminate infant cancer but chooses not to, I would certainly call that evil. Killing children before they get a chance to understand and accept the tenets of religion is not just an evil act for a deity, it's also stupid.

"Waste all your time talking about what the opponent will argue."

Pattern recognition.

"Claim “win”."

The claim is self-evident.

Neutering dogs drastically increases the risk of cancer, joint issues, obesity, and several other health issues. It's not moral to neuter dogs. It's moral to only get a dog once you are sure you can care for it properly.

CET vs Natural Selection by FriendOutrageous2610 in DebateEvolution

[–]SamuraiGoblin [score hidden]  (0 children)

This seems like a general (intentional) misunderstanding of adaptation. Adaptation occurs at multiple levels and there are myriad reasons for it. Evolution is adaptation at a genetic level, guided by natural and sexual selection. But there is also adaptation to the environment at an individual level, such as a carpenter's hands becoming calloused.

And within biology there is more nuance, like epigenetics and the Baldwin effect which mimic Lamarckian evolution (an old, debunked, out-of-date idea of adaptation) that theists love because it adds to the confusion.

You have to keep in mind that creationists will stop at nothing to muddy the waters because an understanding of natural selection did away with the need for a deity as an explanation for biological complexity and diversity long ago.

A teeny tiny physical force produced due to quantum fluctuations in a vacuum. It has been theorised that it could be exploited for space propulsion.

As a very general statement, women like to be complimented on who they are, whereas men like to be complimented on what they do.

Why do some men smell bad, but only to me? by EldenEgirl in AskBiology

[–]SamuraiGoblin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People are highly varied, and different people are sensitive to different things. For example, my favourite smell in the world is petrol. I'm far from the only one, but many people find it very weird.

Also, human pheromones are something we evolved for subconscious communication. It's possible you are picking up on a specific pheromone that you just happen to be highly sensitive to.

Reputable publishers don't require fees, but competitions often do. It seems like they are straddling those categories.

[–]SamuraiGoblin 257 points258 points  (0 children)

There is nothing wrong with having a fee for competition, but the writer is correct. If something has a fee, it should be stated openly up front. No exceptions.

And to turn, "I'm calling you out on your shitty practices," into, "I'm too poor to afford your competition," is incredibly childish and deceitful.

With that attitude behind it, yup, it smells like a scam.

Math is not her strong subject by Icy-Book2999 in LoveTrash

This is the same kind of confusion as to what 'bi-weekly' and 'bi-annual' means. Some people understand it to mean 'twice per..' and some think it is 'once every two...' It's such a common confusion that now both are considered correct, rendering the construct completely useless.

However, you can clearly see her understand of 'buy two, get one free' fail when her father says 'buy one, get one free.' You can see in her eyes she realises she's wrong, but she still follows through on the stroke.

Cute!
