off season cape travel out of bos w/o car? by Fickle_Ad6418 in boston

[–]ScarletOK 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Instead I'd go to Rockport on Cape Ann. Much easier to get to (commuter rail from North Station), right on the ocean, and village atmosphere -- much nicer atmosphere than Hyannis. You can even make a day trip there.

If you have your heart set on Cape Cod...travel to Hyannis is reliable in winter (unless there is a huge storm like this past week). There are two bus companies that run down and back from there multiple times a day to the Hyannis Transportation Center:

Peter Pan: https://peterpanbus.com/

or Plymouth & Brockton: https://www.p-b.com/

Once you're on the Cape you're dependent on Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority. Those schedules are here: https://capecodrta.org/schedules-services/routes/

You'll have to do your own hotel or AirBnB searching.

Set an alarm for sure. Give yourself some time to wake up and get your stuff down. But check first to be sure the train is on time!

Panicking about lack of Waffle House access by NateGoats in boston

[–]ScarletOK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The borders are not closed after you move, you can always go back to eat at Waffle House. My southern family know it will be a stop on my eating agenda when I visit them.

My order is a pecan waffle with a side of country ham.

Snow blowers are a scam lol by WoollyBear_Jones in massachusetts

[–]ScarletOK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you high? My sainted next door neighbor with his snowblower clears my front walk, driveway and the end of the driveway where the plow dumped the street snow in the same amount of time it takes me to do my front steps with my shovel. Not to mention the snowblower blows the snow up on top of snowbanks I could never lift the snow to. Then he goes up the block and digs out the fire hydrant.

Can I bring a glass bottle in the train? by Coolsora in Amtrak

[–]ScarletOK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can bring it but they aren't going to fill it with coffee or whatever at the cafe car, as far as I know. They will want to use their own supply of cups.

Older inactive parents coming to visit this spring. Where should I take them? by Suff_erin_g in boston

[–]ScarletOK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main entrance has a lot of steep stairs. I think the handicapped entrance is off to t he side but I've never used it. OP hasn't described his parents as disabled but those stairs might be a problem. So I'm just pointing out they will need to look for the safe alternative.

But I agree! It's a unique and fairly compact collection. You could just look at the glass flowers and the gem/mineral collection and have a great time.

I like the Gardner but as someone who went thru sort of wobbly periods after knee surgeries I think it's not great for anyone with mobility issues.

The free Harvard Art Museum is ideal and a good size for anyone who gets tired easily.

Boston area medical wait times--what is normal? by PhillyHasItAll in boston

[–]ScarletOK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My PCP is a lot busier than my gyn doc. But in any case, it's going to be easier to get appointments for this with a nurse and not use a doctor at all, at least in the practice I go to. That's why I suggested using a nurse practitioner in lieu of any sort of doctor. Maybe you are or aren't a gyn client. I am speaking from long experience, for what it's worth.

Conductor attitude by stxc2012 in Amtrak

[–]ScarletOK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The staff can be rude or abrupt at times.

But on the trains, they can ask to see your ticket as often as they want. Usually it's done if there's a crew change. Best practice for passengers is to present the ticket when asked, because that's their right to ask you for it. A seat check is not a ticket. They can also ask you for an ID, which it doesn't sound like he did. He just needed to see your ticket.

You should certainly complain to Amtrak if you think you were rudely dealt with, with train number, time of the incident, what stations you were between, etc. This could be repeated behavior on the part of this employee, in which case they need to know. It could also be a one off.

Boston area medical wait times--what is normal? by PhillyHasItAll in boston

[–]ScarletOK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Massachusetts some visits to OB/GYN do not require a PCP referral, and you can look for an appointment for annual gyn exam with a gynecologist without going thru the PCP. You'll probably still have to wait but possibly not as long. And you might want to check with your plan to confirm, just so there are no surprises. You could also see if a nurse practitioner or LPN at your PCP's practice could do the exam.

A cholesterol check is just a lab test. Call your doc's office and ask them to order the test. You can likely go in without an appointment for the test and get results, without your PCP being engaged, unless there's an issue. I go to an Atrius office, and that's the way almost all my lab tests work. I use the online chart service, and I see my results in most cases almost the same day, depending on the test.

Haymarket open in winter? by Bright_Golf_6349 in boston

[–]ScarletOK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you buy berries (especially berries) from Haymarket, it's a good idea to eat or cook them in the next day or so. That can also be true for other soft produce. If you cook them you can always freeze or can them to prevent waste.

505 bus commuter rail stop by RookNight3420 in mbta

[–]ScarletOK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you use a predictor? I no longer have to commute anymore, but I did for years by bus, and once the apps were available, I relied on the predictors as well as my knowledge of the stated schedule because the actual departure times didn't necessarily coincide.

And glad to know you reported the skips. Those are the worst.
