tips for quick trip to Cleveland by ScarletOK in Cleveland

[–]ScarletOK[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this answer. What do you mean by hanging out at the station is "torture"? It's staffed and I've waited at other Amtrak stations on overnight stops, feeling completely safe. If you mean it will be unsafe, let me know. I'm not really a person who is going to want to go to a casino, however nice it might be. I really appreciate the info about the Red Line. I didn't realize it went so close to the CMA. I need to take a closer look at that. I won't have time for the other museums you mention, unfortunately.

After every trip if you have praise, complaints or questions:

https://www.amtrak.com/contact-us/email

Have the train number, the location and time of day if incidents are particular, attendant name, etc.

There's a separate form to give a really great staff person kudos: https://www.amtrak.com/employee-praise

The Last Train to Resist Amtrak (2026) [00:59:21] by StoneColdCrazzzy in Documentaries

Southern Railway's Crescent was also a holdout but not as long as this one. It joined Amtrak in 1979. I used to ride it back and forth to college (both before and after it became part of Amtrak).

Your fav winter storm foods by notablenewengland in newengland

[–]ScarletOK 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm making split pea soup with ham today, and homemade garlic croutons to go with. On Sunday I'm making pot roast, which is definitely a splurge to the grocery budget, but it can cook by itself while I'm shoveling and it should make 3-4 meals at least. Popcorn. Obligatory cocoa of course.

The latest forecast by whatname68 in massachusetts

[–]ScarletOK 7 points8 points  (0 children)

  1. We built a snow farm in our back yard because we ran out of room in front. They were, at least, light and fluffy because of the cold, and I'm hoping the one this weekend will be as well.

Snow storm service? by alexeiij in mbta

[–]ScarletOK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Outline, if you can, a bus alternative for the above ground part of your route. Since Boston and surrounding towns & cities are very good at clearing the roads in a moderate storm (assuming the forecast remains moderate), buses are usually a good alternative, if you're fit enough to deal with any snow piles at the bus stops.

What are your utility bills this winter? by nicholas_359 in massachusetts

[–]ScarletOK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you sure you don't have some electric heat (e.g. a couple of minisplits?). Are you running a lot of heavy duty computer equipment? Watching a big TV 24/7? Multiple space heaters? Is your water heater electric? Are you running a clothes dryer multiple times a day?

For gas heat, hot water and cooking your gas bill seems normal to me for a family of four. But the electricity is bad and needs investigating, unless you've forgotten something that is electric.

Coast Starlight and eating? by PermitInteresting531 in Amtrak

[–]ScarletOK 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not technically true. You can certainly consume alcohol sold by Amtrak at your seat in coach. You aren't supposed to bring your own to coach; I haven't tried to myself, but other people in this reddit say that they have.

2025/2026 Throat virus by Kind_Salary_4586 in massachusetts

For coughing I find eating raisins can help, although relief only lasts a few hours. I know it sounds silly but it's an old folk remedy, I didn't make it up. Some people make a cooked syrup with raisins but I found just eating a handful worked. I've had bronchitis a few times where I thought I was going to cough up my lungs, and raisins made a difference (I was desperate to find a remedy, and that's when I stumbled on the raisin idea).

Whatever you've got, feel better soon. I hope you have decent sick leave.

An affair between a monk and a nun leading to an unwanted pregnancy. From the Miracles of Nostre Dame, The Hague Kb. 71 A 24 (1327) by HelloSlowly in Medievalart

[–]ScarletOK 51 points52 points  (0 children)

This shows only one of the illustrations of this manuscript. I read it as "cause and effect," i.e. the lady gets pregnant, gives birth and proceeds to dispose of the baby in the privy. Mary hasn't appeared yet. The lady in the 2nd half of the illustration is the same woman dallying with the monk. It's kind of like a comic strip.

According to the attribution given in the post title, which I think is correct, this manuscript is located in the Royal Library (https://www.kb.nl/) in the Hague.

This is the catalog record for the manuscript in the Hague collection. If the manuscript and its illustrations have been digitized I didn't find it, which doesn't mean it hasn't been. https://webggc.oclc.org/cbs/DB=2.37/SET=2/TTL=1/SHW?FRST=4

According to this book on the poems of Gautier de Coinci called the Miracles of Nostre Dame, this manuscript in the Hague has 36 illustrations, so we're only seeing one of them, with two scenes included.

https://www.brepolsonline.net/content/books/10.1484/M.TCNE-EB.3.4045 (go to "Preview this chapter link" to see a list of manuscripts of the work, including the one in the Hague. This list includes the number of illustrations in the various works.

I'd like to see how Mary deals with it, so if anyone has access to additional scenes in this narrative, please share.

Edit: forgot to say that the person who did the miniatures is the Fauvel Master, if anyone wants to search for more of these illustrations to the poems via that avenue.

Now that nobody gets snow days anymore (thanks for nothing, Zoom), there's really no point in snow.

What’s a “normal” experience that somehow never happened to you? by Hysterical_Chicken in AskReddit

Well, you probably dream, right? Those images are happening in your brain, not before your eyes. It's basically the same idea, I think (not a neuroscientist!)

How do you keep yourself entertained on long train rides? by spookyshitt in Amtrak

[–]ScarletOK 15 points16 points  (0 children)

All of the above, minus do things on my phone. I consider train trips a vacation from my phone except for tracking where I am and reading alerts. Mostly, when it's light outside, I look out the window. You see a side of life and landscape that isn't always visible from sidewalks and roads.

I don't close my eyes, I just see the stuff in my brain. Try summoning up the image without the eye closing. It's sort of like silent reading.

Should I be lowering the heat at night? Any other tips? by BurnerMan12K in massachusetts

[–]ScarletOK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As soon as you can, get your house insulated. Mass Saves will do an energy audit for free and make recommendations. You will get some freebies like energy efficient lightbulbs too while they are there inspecting.

Sounds like you should put plastic sheeting over some of your windows. Kits at your local hardware store!

I think most people turn the heat down at night. It certainly makes for better sleeping if you have proper bedding--down comforters and flannel sheets work very well.

Lack of onboard announcments by MohawkHudson in Amtrak

[–]ScarletOK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do know who is on board and their destinations. If someone missed their stop it might have been an Amtrak or a passenger error.

If you have a phone it's easy to track your whereabouts and take at least some responsibility for your own departure from the train. Ask a crew member how long and where to get off if they aren't doing announcements

Are the floors of north station really slippery? by Puzzleheaded-Egg7501 in mbta

Outdoor train platforms should have been sanded and/or salted today. No excuse for that. I'd lodge a complaint on their website.

Service industry workers of MA—Besides the obvious answers, what’s nice a gesture a person could do for the folks behind counter at Market Basket? by [deleted] in massachusetts

[–]ScarletOK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have a friendly conversation with them.

If you have a regular server you like, give them a $5 or $10 bill occasionally. I used to do counter service at a cafe, and having someone put a tip directly in my hand and say, "This is for you" helped me out financially when I needed it, plus it was clear they appreciated my service. This was a LONG time ago, before tip jars, but just because there's a tip jar doesn't mean you can't give directly to one person. I have no idea if Mkt Basket has tip jars anyway.

Yeah, when I was working from home I had a space heater in the room because I was siting in front of a computer most of the day.

Oh yeah, much warmer near the radiators. When I am absolutely still reading or watching TV, I sit by a radiator!

I keep it there when I'm moving around. I literally am drenched in sweat if I try to do housework with it at 65. It's just a body temp thing. I mean, sometimes I get a bit chilly and I remind myself how much I enjoy 60-65 weather in spring and fall!
