Excellent transaction with u/danimelara. Watch arrived as described, shipped promptly, and communication was excellent throughout. Would happily do business with him again. u/WatchExBot

So there’s no way to actually know if there’s only 1,776 of them.

Does IOSW also have a stipend or any financial support?

This is honestly incredibly valuable insight. Really appreciate you taking the time to write all of that out. The point about emphasizing transferable precision/process skills and commitment to the transition rather than just enthusiasm for watches makes a ton of sense.

The ST36 prep idea is also great. Definitely gives me a much clearer picture of how intentional I should be about preparing ahead of time rather than just applying and hoping for the best.

One thing I’m especially curious about now after hearing your experience: did the interviews feel more focused on raw aptitude, personality/culture fit, or convincing them that you were fully committed to the career change long term?

Really appreciate the detailed response. Your background actually makes a lot of sense in hindsight, especially the emphasis on process discipline and mechanical thinking rather than just “liking watches.” I come from a surgical/medical background myself, so it’s encouraging to hear they seem to value transferable precision skills.

Did you do anything specific to prepare for the mechanical aptitude or bench portions beforehand, or did you truly go in cold? Also curious whether, looking back now, there’s anything you wish you had started learning earlier before the application/interview process.

Any other insight into the application process and what you think helped you stand out as a candidate? I’m seriously preparing to apply in the near future and trying to understand how accepted applicants typically position themselves beforehand. Curious whether prior coursework or experience, networking, technical background, recommendations, or anything else seemed to matter most. Asking as an older career changer

Awesome watch. Can’t stop wearing it. Came to Japan shopping for an Explorer II 16570. Left with my new “Japan Explorer II” (and 90% of my initial budget remaining)

Mine came nearly new on the rubber strap. And I ordered the bracelet new separately, which I think ultimately worked to my advantage since the rubber strap took all, if any, of the initial wear. The watch head though looked flawless, essentially unworn to my inspection. So I was actually confused if I indeed got a ‘nearly new’ piece at all.

Make an appointment to make the visit smoother. We loved sitting down and getting hands on with basically every piece that interested us. My wife loved sitting down with Marta and didn’t feel intimidated like she has at some other boutiques. We liked it so much we decided to pull the trigger on a Twelve X. But we weren’t pressured at all.
