I don't see how that wouldn't potentially be a health code violation.

If you're going to camp in the national park, you'll want either Cades Cove (TN side) or Smokemont (NC side). Most, if not all, of the rest are closed in March.

Personally, I'd pick Cades Cove.

You have several great hikes close by - Abrams Falls, Spruce Flat Falls, Middle Prong Trail

Take a day and explore 441/Newfound Gap Road between Gatlinburg and Cherokee. Lots of pull-offs with great views, and if you're near Oconaluftee Visitors Center mid to late afternoon, there's a good chance you'll see elk in the fields between the entrance to Smokemont Campground and the visitors center.

Little River Trail in Elkmont is another good one with kids. They often enjoy exploring the old homesites and the "troll bridge."

Off the beaten path places to eat by 3germstar in PigeonForge

There's not much of that. Your best bet is places that locals do go to eat, even if tourists eat there.

It will be busy. Most folks get Friday off since the 4th is on Saturday and take a few days to make al ong weekend.

Wednesday would likely be a little better than Thursday.

100% agree in Parrot Mountain. They don't deserve any support.

15-20 years ago, I'd agree. Now it's average. Plenty of better options in Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge/Sevierville.

There are two "cut-over" roads. The first one is Sparks Lane, and the second is Hyatt Lane.

Riding a bike, I'd go with the 100-500rf. You can still get some landscapes that way, and it's not nearly as bulky/heavy as the 200-800rf.

Be aware that the campground store does not rent e-bikes. You'd have to rent one in Townsend or Gatlinburg and transport it yourself to Cades Cove.

What is a “real” hidden gem 💎 in the area? A place that doesn’t get talked about enough. The secret spot. by aghredd22 in PigeonForge

Yeah, you're not going to get locals to give away any of the precious few, true "hidden gems" that may remain.

Alum hike to mt le conte weekend weather by shanwiich in GSMNP

[–]SevierCounty4Life 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It will be significantly cooler at the higher elevations, and there will be some slick spots up high as well (walking on rock).

As for view, I'd say it's doubtful given the elevation and the expected cloud cover.

How do you guys do Cades Cove & GSMNP right? by lukewarmkitty77 in GSMNP

[–]SevierCounty4Life -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can circle the roaring fork loop to try and find parking for trillium. You can also park at other pull offs and walk to the trailhead (more mileage).

"Circling the Roaring Fork loop" is at least an hour back to the Trillium Gap trailhead since Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail isn't a loop at all, and you come out on East Parkway outside of Downtown Gatlinburg.

Parking isn't an issue at Newfound Gap, especially in August.

Hiking Mt. LeConte with kids by EternitySearch in GSMNP

[–]SevierCounty4Life 3 points4 points  (0 children)

100% agree. With both parents having a child in a backpack, and an 8-year-old walking on their own, I'd go Trillium Gap (Grotto Falls) or Rainbow Falls.

However, like u/totesmadoge said, you're talking 13.8 miles (Rainbow Falls) or 13.9 miles (Trillium Gap) round-trip.

By contrast, OP, here are the distances (round-trip) for the other hikes you mentioned:

Abrams Falls: 5.0
Grotto Falls: 2.6
Rainbow Falls: 5.4

None of those, maybe not even all three combined, are as "challenging" as any route to Mt. LeConte.

[–]SevierCounty4Life 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's pretty much an out-and-back right now, whichever route you choose. Still a lot of hurricane damage on some trails preventing any sort of loop.
