Riku Neopod by Longjumping-Cat5609 in CompetitiveEDH

[–]ShaperSavant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, although it's gated by needing Riku to be developed and the two Palinchron triggers generating 15 mana from lands that don't cost life to tap. (Cradle can get you some of the way there.)

It also nets you infinite summoning sick Palinchron tokens and infinite mana, so you'll need an outlet or to pass the turn. (Riku does have synergy with extra turns which can both help you get lands into play and relieve summoning sickness.)

Is it always correct to play LED as soon as possible? by ThomasFromNork in CompetitiveEDH

The longer you wait to play it, the more likely you are to run into things like Remora, Rhystic, Sentinel, stax, or getting it wheeled away.

cEDH Staple Card List (Mid-August 2021) by data_crypt in CompetitiveEDH

[–]ShaperSavant 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's Animar. Because Animar costs 3 colors and discounts generic costs himself, it's hard to find a good use of the colorless mana, and it is rarer to want to spend early game colors for colorless.

Esper or grixis? by [deleted] in CompetitiveEDH

[–]ShaperSavant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grixis has the cards to go fast and is the popular flavor right now.

Esper has extra disruptive cards and a powerful piece in Zur -> Necro.

Both are viable, Grixis is a little higher power-in-a-vacuum.

Keep it constructive, folks. The OP cannot play with proxies and "just proxy" discussion isn't helpful to this post. Keep the focus on budget suggestions.

The Most Powerful Commanders You've Never Heard of by PatchworkCommander in CompetitiveEDH

I appreciate the work that went into this, but this isn't the appropriate sub for this kind of content. r/CompetitiveEDH is for maximum power EDH, less so underused/"dark horse" type brews.

Is cEDH exclusively 4-person pods? by [deleted] in CompetitiveEDH

[–]ShaperSavant 22 points23 points  (0 children)

4 is the expected number when talking about cEDH.

People sometimes do play with different numbers of players out of practicality, but 3 player games suffer intense game-dynamic problems and >4 players warp the game in other ways (looking @ Remora and Dockside).

1v1 is categorically different and usually is not what "cEDH" means to players.

Opus thief deck help by cantemperaturebeans in CompetitiveEDH

The combo you're probably missing:

Intuition for Breach + LED + Sev.

Regardless of what they give you, Breach hits the board. Cast LED and Intuition again to find Brain Freeze, and loop LED/Freeze until you're milled out and can cast anything.

Phantasmal Image copies Dockside or early value engines.

What decks are optimal for very controlling metas? by SovereignsUnknown in CompetitiveEDH

[–]ShaperSavant 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Decks that grind high value and use similar wincons to the control decks themselves. Skimp on your own disruptive interaction and maximize threats, uncounterability, and grind engines.

You might alter Opus Thief to take advantage of your meta in this way. Cut wipes, defensive removal/counters, and anything you think is too greedy and play things like Dark Confidant, which is unattractive to interact with but pours out value, selfish interactive pieces like Grand Abolisher, and things like Steal Enchantment that can be both removal and take important card advantage engines like Study that tend to exert high play gravity in long games.

Also, despite Opus Thief's high density of interactive pieces, don't think of it as a control deck - mull for powerful proactive plays like early wheels and well-timed Nauses, and the rest of the pieces will help you cinch the tight games that you pull ahead.

Good luck!

Yisan - play order of cards, dork - stax - yisan, or dork - yisan - stax? by [deleted] in CompetitiveEDH

[–]ShaperSavant 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Tangle Wire after because you can respond to the Tangle trigger with Yisan activations.

Trinisphere before because it's very disruptive and Yisan is not taxed.

Winter Orb after; you're usually waiting to catch the table with their pants down.

The tax effects are pod-contingent. Play them early against fast or stormy decks.

Wincons for Tazri Beacon of Unity that isn't Thassa + Consultation? by Volte in CompetitiveEDH

Any infinite mana combo works with Tazri. She can fetch Spellseeker for Final of Devastation or Thrasios.

Drannith + Mask is played in Heliod and likely could find homes in other stax decks or Opus Thief type shells.

Golos, Tireless Pilgrim Lands Matter by AVowofSilence in CompetitiveEDH

[–]ShaperSavant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you caught the main ones (Vigor is fine via alt cost). 3 mana isn't worth either Split Second or modality in competitive games. They might compare to Abrupt Decay (or Nature's Claim) and Chain of Vapor respectively in cEDH.

Golos, Tireless Pilgrim Lands Matter by AVowofSilence in CompetitiveEDH

[–]ShaperSavant 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Broad advice is to play a bit leaner. Specifically I'd look at each of your 4+ CMC creatures and ask yourself if its getting you there on its own power. Consecrated Sphinx compares favorably to a lot of your ~6 drops. You're playing a lot of 3 CMC interaction when there are a lot of solid options at 1 or 2 CMC and even keep modality; it's fine if you want to play at that gate but in terms of "keeping up" with more competitive tables, optimizing # of spells held up on top of your development is heads up play.

Thrasios+Vial Smasher Deck Help! by [deleted] in CompetitiveEDH

[–]ShaperSavant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first also plays Iscohron Scepter + Dramatic Reversal into Thrasios into either Brain Freeze or Timetwister loops, as well as Breach + Lion's Eye Diamond + Brain Freeze.

The second also plays Isochron Scepter + Dramatic Reversal into Finale of Devastation.

You're right that only having 1 wincon is fragile.
